Scale-space image analysis for mapping spotted knapweed in grassland ecosystems

New in #AppsPlantSci by Shohreh Sahebi & David J. Hill

doi.org/10.1002/aps3... @thompsonriversu.bsky.social #botany #invasivespecies #Gaussian #remotesensing #grasslands #conservation #knapweed

Image of a Gaussian pyramid. Scale-space representations combine the two-dimensional spatial domain with a third dimension representing spatial scale, such that features can be represented across both space and image spatial resolution. Gaussian pyramids (GPs) are constructed to create representations of the images across the scale-space. In the GP shown here the image resolution decreases from 2.9x2.9 cm at the base of the pyramid to 46x46 cm at its apex. Image credit: Shohreh Sahebi.

Last weekend I raked our small meadow on wildlife site/community garden. Clay soil. Have never seen such a small amount of vegetation growth in one year. I had to use the plastic leaf rake not the pretty wooden one which always makes me feel a bit Marie-Antoinette. #meadows #grasslands

The study compiled data from 1006 pairs of observations across 96 studies to assess the impacts of simulated livestock #defoliation on various measures of plant diversity (including evenness) and #productivity in Chinaโ€™s #grasslands.

#biodiversity | #simulatedgrazing

doi.org/10.1093/jpe/...

Conceptual diagram illustrating the effects of defoliation on processes controlling plant diversity and productivity of grasslands in China. Red upward and blue downward arrows represent positive responses and negative responses under defoliation, respectively. The dashed double-headed arrow represents plant-soil feedbacks. These responses under defoliation are drawn based on the results of this study. In addition, soil microbes and properties, which drive plant diversity and productivity in terrestrial ecosystems (indicated by the dashed area), were not included in this study. Therefore, they represent important areas for future research. For illustrative purposes, we have used plant examples from the Integration and Application Network, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (ian.umces.edu/imagelibrary/). AGB, aboveground biomass; BGB, belowground biomass; ANPP, aboveground net primary productivity.

A grassland landscape shot in the Badlands of the United States on a cloudy day. In the foreground, draws and coulees filled with trees that are turning from green to bright yellow. On the tops of the draws, little bluestem grasses (reddish) and buffalo grass (light beige). In the distance, the Little Missouri River valley and a sliver of a gray sky.
