Women in tech have been officially cancelled. Yesterday Grace Hopper - one of the largest conferences for women in tech since 1994 - cancelled its 2026 event due to lack of funding. Corporate sponsorships and individual registrations fell way short of expectations.
I would like to say I'm shocked, but I'm not. Tech companies used to make an effort to support women. They sponsored conferences like Grace Hopper, funded women's leadership programs, announced their diversity goals, and made sure women were represented on panels. I was the beneficiary of many of these initiatives.
Now we've swung completely in the opposite direction. Supporting women in tech has become controversial. It's become political. It's become risky - you could even get sued for it!
I've spent my entire career in technology, going back to college where I graduated with a computer science degree from MIT. And still 20 years later, we haven't solved the problem of lack of women. Women are still underrepresented in technical roles, especially in Al. So while it's not surprising, it's incredibly disappointing that at a moment when technology is transforming the world, we're no longer invested in making sure women have a meaningful role in building that future.
For the women currently in tech who have achieved some level of success, now it's our turn to do the same for the next generation. Mentor and promote women. Look to make sure you have diversity on the panel you're hosting. Don't abandon the initiatives that helped you get to where you are just because they are no longer in vogue.
