@philipmrussell.bsky.socialCould your kitchen cupboard get you through 3 days without electricity or running water? Food, drinking water, a torch, a radioā¦ and one surprisingly important manual tin opener!
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialHalf a million new trees for England. Brilliant news!
But how many will survive the next drought, escape rabbit damage and still be growing in 2050?
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialAround 6.3 million properties in England are in areas at risk of flooding.
But would you know if yours was one of them?

@philipmrussell.bsky.socialThe heating is going back on.
But before turning the thermostat up, ask a better question:
Is the heat you're already paying for actually going where you need it?
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialCould your home cope with an inconvenient week?
No shopping. Minimal electricity. Limited external resources.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialYour freezer could be one of the best money-saving appliances you already own.
Freeze bread BEFORE it goes stale. Freeze leftovers BEFORE they're forgotten. Buy genuine reductions strategically. Actually eat what you've frozen.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialPutting a green leaf on the packet doesn't make the product green.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialThat beautifully tidy autumn garden may be a disaster for wildlife.

@philipmrussell.bsky.socialWe happily pay vastly more for water in a plastic bottle.
But are we actually buying something safer?
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialImagine what Britain would look like if every walk left the neighbourhood slightly cleaner than before.
Next time you go for a walk, take gloves and a reusable bag. Pick up just a few safe pieces of litter.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialBefore spending Ā£10,000 making your home greener, what could you save by spending Ā£0?
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialThe best bird feeder in your garden might be the plant you didn't cut down in September.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialThat enormous spider in the bath isn't plotting against you.
Sometimes going green simply means not squashing something.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialIf one person is sitting in one chair, why heat the entire house equally?
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialEvery autumn we rake up free soil improver, put it in a bināand later buy compost and mulch.
Perhaps fallen leaves aren't rubbish at all.
@philipmrussell.bsky.social20mm of rain on a 60mĀ² roof can mean roughly 1,000 litres of collectable water.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialA dripping tap. A blocked gutter. A cracked seal. A loose roof tile.
None feels urgent in September.
By January, they might be.
A Ā£5 repair today can prevent a Ā£500 problem this winter.
@philipmrussell.bsky.socialBefore automatically turning the heating back on this autumn, spend an hour finding out where last winterās heat was going.
