The current form of the sand garden dates to renovations in the early Edo period, but a theory has been put forward that the cone originated in Yoshimasa's time.
It may have started as a smaller hillock on which guests could sit to enjoy the moon!

Although the idea persists that it was always Shōgun Yoshimasa's intention to cover Jishō-ji's (慈照寺) Kannon-den (観音殿) in silver foil, to perhaps mimic his grandfather's 'Golden Pavilion', there is no evidence such plans ever existed.

And what better sweets to enjoy with a trip to the 'Silver Pavilion' than Tawaraya Yoshitomi's (俵屋吉富) 'ginshadan' (銀沙灘).
Flavoured with hama-natto (浜納豆), the higashi (干菓子) have a sweet and salty taste that pairs perfectly with matcha🍵🙌
