The very last gas-powered street lamp in Glasgow was extinguished for the final time im September 1971, and with it the need for lamp posts to have this feature.

An old lamp post at the top of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's Sixty Steps in the West End of Glasgow. Made by McCulloch and Co., it seems likely it dates back to the 1870s when the steps were built.

From Losing Your Backward: Joric has just made a sudden inexplicable appearance in the cab Fion is riding in #WIPSnips #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #SFF #FantasySky #GasLamp #TimeTravel

Fion’s gaze roved the floorboards, the ceiling, and the rest of the unlikely places an adult male might be able to hide inside a hansom cab, then back to her surprise companion. Her pulse thrummed in her ears, but the parts of her mind that were supposed to react to danger and seek reasonable explanations for inexplicable things were strangely mute. Joric leaned back in his seat, chest still heaving. “I think you might need an explanation for that.” “That would be lovely. Thank you.” He eyed her sideways. “It’s … uh … would it surprise you to hear that I don’t have a good one?” She sighed. “Not in the slightest.”

The book cover sits at the center of the image. It shows a gothic window with pale yellow glass rimmed with white flowers, leaves, claws, branches, and strange hair? flower petal? crab-like monsters. Standing in front of the window is the silhouette of a man in a fedora. Towards the bottom right of the cover is the logo for this year's SPFBO Finalists. The background image is a close up of a sepia toned dogwood flower's center.

Fun with vibes and my debut novel, "Man's Daughter." It's the story of a fugitive mage and her ancestors' cursed rifle.

Think Vikings with guns.

From Losing You Backward: Joric is trying to walk back to Fion's flat when he discovers he's being followed. #WIPSnips #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #SFF #FantasySky #GasLamp #TimeTravel

His pursuer was a stocky man with greasy hair, a couple of inches taller than Joric and half again as broad. He carried a dented metal hip flask in his left hand and flexed the right one like he was preparing to use it. A younger man with blond hair trotted behind him, wringing a tweed flat cap in both hands. He was restless. Worried. Throwing looks over one shoulder, then the other. That was a bad sign. “Are you Joric?” the older one said, grinning, a false, mean grin with two holes in it. A man with missing teeth. Also a bad sign.

I might have used this one before, but here you go ... From Losing You Backward: Fion thinks Joric gave her a false name, and Joric is a little too drunk to properly defend himself. #WIPSnips #WIP #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #GasLamp #TimeTravel

“Why did you lie to me?” she said again. He spat out an ugly, jarring laugh. “What does it matter what I call myself?” “Basic principles of honesty. If you can’t trust a man to tell you his name, you can’t trust him to tell you anything.” Joric spotted the barmaid and stuck his hand in the air, but Fion caught it and wrestled it back down before it could do its work. “You’ve had quite enough,” she told him. “I disagree. Barmaid!” The barmaid swept by. “Barkeep says you’ve had enough,” she called over her shoulder.

From Losing You Backward: This is the second-to-last time Joric will see Fion, and he's just finding out how badly the last time is going to go. #WIPSnipts #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #SFF #FantasySky #GasLamp #TimeTravel

He held his hands up, and his pretty eyes went wide with innocent surprise. “I’m sorry. We have met … haven’t we?” “I don’t know. Did you come into my shop once?” The spark in his eyes guttered out. Meanwhile, Fion’s body continued to do stupid, nonsensical things, such as experiencing remorse for saying mean-spirited words. Why did she care? The man had danger hanging on him like a hooded cloak. She should say more curt, off-putting things. “Once,” he said. “Six months … ago.”

Another one from Losing You Backward: Joric time skipped into a wealthy man's barn and is suffering the consequences. #WIPSnips #WIP #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #FantasySky #Gaslamp #TimeTravel

The gaol, at least, was clean. Possibly brand new. The straw palliasse on the iron bedstead was unmarred by sweat stains, partly digested wine, or the fetid stink of former occupants. His cell even had a flushing toilet. How luxurious. He wedged his pitiful self into a corner. The bed was clean, but the cold stone floor was the better seating for a trespassing, horse-thieving, accidental villain. How many days would Uldir keep him here, steeped in unrelenting boredom? He was just putting the final touches on an elaborate fantasy in which the central character was a bottle of whiskey when the constable appeared at the door.

This one is from Losing You Backward. Willem is informing Fion about what Joric has been getting up to. #WIPSnips #WIP #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #Fantasy #FantasySky #GasLamp #TimeTravel

Willem’s expression didn’t change, but a dark cloud gathered over him. “If you’re talking about that person who believes himself your suitor, I assure you, he is but a stain under my boot.” “He’s more gentleman than you could ever hope to be,” she said, her words biting harder than she’d intended, given that only a few hours ago she’d been mentally deriding Joric as a liar and a villain. “Oh? Then perhaps it will surprise you to know that last night your gentleman suitor made a spectacle of himself at the Scoundrel’s Hook. I have heard from the constable that he was so drunk that two men had to drag him from the establishment into the street. He’s an embarrassing sot, my dear. You lower yourself to be seen with him.”
