Henry's infographic review of Echoes of the End from Myrkur Games and Deep Silver. Abridged review below. ECHOES OF THE END was a game I had seen on the store front for a while and when it became free on the PS+ Extra tier, I took the plunge. As a fan of third-person fantasy action-adventure games, I knew I'd likely get some enjoyment out of it, but that faith appeared to be misguided during the first chapter. The opening was a bit of a slog, and I almost gave up on the game entirely. I'm glad I didn't though, as ECHOES OF THE END only improved from Chapter 2 onwards, and in hindsight, the opening chapter was a drag solely due to the assist character for that period. For a AA game, it pushes the Unreal 5 engine hard, with stunning artistry in the aesthetics of each area, which includes many varied locations. The character models are stunning, especially for the main characters, the animations are smooth, and the game world feels lived in. The sound design is also fantastically done, especially listening through headphones. The wind and rain sound like they are really around you, the howls of monsters in the distance, the screams of enemies as you sever limbs and lop of heads. It all works extremely well. As for the traversal and puzzle mechanics, the game excels at character progression. It will introduce a puzzle or a traversal problem, you will learn how to do it, then the game will introduce a new element puzzle or travel with a new skill, allow you to get used to that, then tweak the requirements to present a challenge for you to overcome. Great story, fun combat, short run time (I completed it in 12hrs), gorgeous environments, awesome puzzle mechanics, fantastic acting and characters, and wonderful linear adventure. Totally recommended.Overall, this game has flaws, but for the price (or the price of a PS+ subscription) it is a must play. The AA space is one filled with hidden gems, and ECHOES OF THE END is one of them. 8.5/10
