Major league #baseball players “Minooka Mike" McNally (Red Sox, left) and Hall of Famer Herb Pennock (Red Sox, right) flank "Sailor Bob" Shawkey (Yankees) in London. They were US Navy yeomen during #ww1 / #fww. I’ve written about all three in various books. — @sportingnews.com, February 19, 1942

Today in 1915 Bulgaria decides to join the war on the side of the Central Powers and declares war on Serbia, an old adversary. A chance to settle old scores and reclaim lost territory of the previous decades. Let's see how it goes for them!

Upper Left: Bulgarian Flag in 1914. Three equal stripes, white on top, green in middle, and red on bottom. Plus a crest with a crown atop and a golden lion looking left in it with red background. The three colors of the stripes are found in the crest and crown.

Upper Right: Black and white photo of Bulgarian artillery firing. Smoke coming out of the barrel. Looks like a howitzer lobbing shells up and over. 3 soldiers manning the cannon with 2 men in background, one pointing in the sky at the shot. Pretty barren landscape with a hill in the background. (Probably the Macedonian front.)

Bottom Left: Black and white photo of Bulgarian infantry in a trench built into rocks. Rifles resting on the parapet. Some snow in the background. Most soldiers sitting and kneeling. One many standing looking across No Man's Land.

Bottom Right: Color photo of St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia Bulgaria. Multiple domes and numerous windows. Distinctive light green roofs on most of the domes. The top dome looks golden. Blue sky above with a few floating white clouds. Stone parking area with white lines in the foreground.

I’ve just read a ridiculous take on the comparative military experiences of two #FWW British officers (one very famous as a writer) & I’m writing this as a way of venting rather than mention it to the person who posted.

#FWW A reminder. Before there was AI making things up and adding details to photos that it was only supposed to colourise, there were humans and a thing called ‘bad history’.
“Sapper’s specialist trade badge”, my a___. That’s the standard ‘flaming grenade’ helmet of the line infantry & cavalry...

A screen shot of a Facebook post by “WW1 Colourised Photos” that contains an example of a lack of knowledge and an absence of research - in this case concerning insignia on the Adrian helmet worn by the subject of a colourised image.

A WFA branch talk in Gloucester gives an opportunity to visit the Cathedral. Chance encounter with this memorial to Fabian Ware - founder of the Imperial War Graves Commission.
The lamp badge defies artificial intelligence since it doesn’t seem to be described in CWGC brand update web pages. #FWW

I have also found one of the most graphic description of wounds I have ever had the misfortune to read, published in a magazine intended for general circulation in 1927. So much for postwar silence. #fww #archives #research

Archival theory of the day: the informal gatherings of the London County Committee of the Ypres League which ran monthly from the mid-1920s were essentialy a male variant of WI meetings. #fww #archives #research

I’ve not previously seen this at #Edinburgh Waverley station. How current was the term ‘The Jellicoe Express’ during the First World War? I hadn’t encountered it before.

A plaque on a wall at Edinburgh Waverley station commemorating ’The Jellicoe Express’ - a rail service that from 1917 ran daily between London and Thurso during both world wars and which stopped at Edinburgh. It was named after the First World War British Admiral Sir John Jellicoe and carried service personnel to and from Naval bases around the country, including Scapa Flow.

Combat artist George Harding created stunning art based upon personal observation right up on the front lines in 2918. He provided a vivid record of #Yanks on the #WesternFront.
