StreetOwl scam avoidance: Doorstep & home. Bogus officials and distraction burglary. Also: water board · gas leak in the street · council survey. What they want: Entry to your home, and whatever cash and valuables are in it. How it works: A caller with a lanyard says they are from the water company, the gas board, the council or the police, and needs to check your taps, meter or garden. While one talks, another searches. A variation asks you to help with a 'lost ball' or 'sick child' next door. The moment they push you to act: Opening the door and letting them in, or leaving it open while you are distracted. Red flags: No appointment. Genuine utility visits are booked, and callers wait outside while you phone the company on the number on your bill. Two callers, or one who keeps you at the back of the house. Where to report: 999 if they are still there, 101 afterwards. Happening right now? Hang up or close the message first. What they want: An 'admin', 'insurance' or 'first repayment' fee for a loan that never arrives. How it works: You apply for a loan online, or are called after a search, and are approved at once regardless of credit history. Before the money can be released a fee is due — by transfer, or in vouchers. Then a second fee. The lender may quote a real firm's FCA number. The moment they push you to act: Paying the fee, usually £25 to £450, sometimes several times. Red flags: A fee before the loan is paid out, especially by voucher or transfer. Guaranteed approval.
