The oceans have soaked up 90% of the extra heat our activities have generated + a huge chunk of our carbon

They've been our silent lifesaver. But they can't absorb forever — and what's stored will haunt us for millennia

In the last interglacial, 125,000y ago, it was hot enough for hippos in Yorkshire, while crocodiles swam in Berkeley Square - well London anyway. That world was less than 1°C hotter than today

Small number. Wildly different planet

Erik the Red's Vikings settled Greenland during the Medieval warm period, which deniers love to point to as 'proof' today's heating is natural

But this was a regional event

Today's heating is global — and nowhere is immune.

A Mars-sized object hit the young Earth and made the Moon -without this: no tides, no axial tilt, no seasons, and probably no us.

Today's climate is the last link in a long chain of crazy serendipity that we're now pulling apart

I'm unflinching about the science — but I refuse to trade in despair. The past tells us things WILL be grim, but if we lose hope and fail to act, they will be far worse

So, pls share and tag 2

That's how hope becomes momentum

A little more than 700m years ago, the Earth was a giant ice-ball. What thawed it? CO2 building up over millions of years

Even the deepest freeze was ended by carbon — the lever we're now yanking

We're in uncharted territory

The air you are breathing today is different in composition to any breathed by humans before. This is because CO2 levels are higher than at any time in the last 14 Million years, and still climbing

3 million years ago, giant camels roamed temperate High Arctic forests, where there is now frozen tundra. The past reveals exactly how different a warmer world looks. No speculation needed. it's written in the rocks

56 million years ago - at the PETM - there was an explosion of heat. There were palms in Siberia, and crocodiles in the Arctic Ocean. Today, the world is heating 10x faster

Imagine heat so humid you can't sweat. No water, no shade will save you — organ failure within 6 hours. These 'wet-bulb' heatwaves become more common as the planet gets hotter. Not distant. Not abstract.

Favourite denier myth - volcanoes emit more CO2 than humans

Ask me or any other volcanologist — false

Volcanoes: ~300 million tonnes CO2/year. Humans: 130 times more

Please pass on the truth. Share and tag 2 others

Dinner-table science: Carbon and CO2 are not the same

Multiply CO2 by 0.27 to get Carbon value

In 2023 we emitted ~40bn tonnes CO2 = ~11bn tonnes carbon

Knowing this is how you catch a misleading stat

74% of Brits say climate change is important. 62% want the UK among the world's most ambitious. We're not a fringe. We're the majority — we just don't feel like the powerful collective we are. Time to feel it.

Fossil fuels are just old sunlight - stored solar energy from deep time that we're now burning all at once. The sun already sends us 10,000x the energy we need. We're digging up the past instead of making the most of the gift above

A water-powered cotton mill opened near my home in 1771, lighting the touchpaper for a planet-wide experiment - the Industrial Revolution. Not once have we paused to ask if it was the right way to go. That's why I wrote #FateOfTheWorld
