#FossilFriday Partial American mastodon mandible on display at the NY State Museum in front of the mastodons depicted in the beautiful mural by @bzaiken.bsky.social. ❤️🦣🐘

bethzaiken.com/new-york-sta...

Partial mastodon jaw (only the front where the chin tusk might have been and the sides where teeth would have been--only one side has teeth) in front of the part of the Beth Zaiken’s mural depicting a boreal bog. The mastodons are an adult and a juvenile. They are about to step over or alongside a fallen log near water.

🦋 The oldest known fossil of a butterfly species still alive today sat in a Japanese museum that charges ¥100 to enter.

Found in Hyogo around 1990, the ~2.5-million-year-old wing matches Aporia potanini, now found only in China.

📢 We're back on Bluesky — and with a new paper ;)

Have you ever wondered how an ancient fern lineage survives millions of years of global change? 🌿

Our new study addresses this by using #fossils, morphology and molecules to reconstruct its deep-time evolution.

This week for #Fossilfriday we have another #Guess that #Lego #Fossil.

This one I would rate as medium. This ceratopsid is from Canada.

Reply your guesses and I will post the answer tomorrow (and to anyone who guesses correctly).

This was designed by TheDinosaurDave.

We also found the Geology and Paleontology Museum in Florence. I'll save some pics for #FossilFriday tomorrow.

I got to see crinoids on my vacation!

In addition to the many other cool things, "The holotype and paratype were discovered independently by two different research groups working in separate field areas of the Hell Creek Formation. The decision was made to combine the efforts of the two..." How often does that happen? ⚒️🧪😎#FossilFriday

I found quite an interesting fossil last week. I thought it was just a piece of bivalve shell, then turned it over and realised there was a xenomorph of an ammonite on the other side #FossilFriday #fossils #ammonite

#FossilFriday blog post about #SaveTheSternberg. I have some thoughts based on what I have read over the last few days and it is not a good look by #FHSU admin. It really looks like closing was always the plan. But they did not count on us.

I had a wonderful time this week at the Marine Reptile Conference at Oxford. Lots of fun chatting about ongoing croc work, and super proud to see Max who I co-supervised present on his master’s project 👏🐊

Huge thanks to all the organisers for making this conference happen!

#FossilFriday Erika Martha von Hoyningen-Huene was one of the only two female vertebrate palaeontologists in the pre-World War II history of Germany. She completed her doctorate in 1933, the same year that Hitler came to power.
