Oude Rode Ogen, or Old Red Eyes, is a black dog called the Beast of Flanders. Said to hunt children who terrorize their parents, one origin suggests he is the spirit of a vagrant wrongly lynched after a failed child kidnapping, come back for vengeance. #FolkloreSunday #SpookySunday

An unknown artist's depiction of Oude Rode Oge, showing a furry black dog, wet with tendril-like fur, with black ichor coming from a growling maw, teeth barred. Red eyes glow like beacons, and handprints follow in his wake, suggesting his ability to change forms to a humanoid shadowy figure.

According to the Chiloe people of Chile, a black cat is necessary when hunting the carbuncle: when digging holes, you must throw a black cat into them. This does not harm the cat, and it will be returned to the hunter unharmed. Without this, death is imminent. #FolkloreSunday

WITCHY CAT NAMES
PYEWACKET is the name of a witch's familiar found by witchfinder general Matthew Hopkins, 1644. GRIMALKIN another witchy name derives from 'grim' grey, 'malkin', a hare or spinster; Graymalkin is the witches' familiar in Shakespeare's Macbeth #FolkloreSunday #31daysofHalloween

In Scottish and Irish folklore, the cù-sìth is a green fairy dog the size of a small cow. It normally hunts silently, but will sometimes bark three times. These barks can be heard for miles; anyone who hears them must reach a safe place by the third bark or die of fright.

In Scottish and Irish folklore, a mythical faerie called a Cait-Sith ("cat-shee"), or Cait-Sidhe in Irish, takes the form of a large black cat with a white spot on its chest.

This may be the origin of the association of black cats with #Halloween.

I named my first cat —a beautiful, black, long-haired fur baby— "Isis." I miss her every day.
