Here are some lovely tatted medallions my mom made. The upper orange medallion is done in perle cotton, and the lower light blue medallion is in silk thread from Z-Twist Dye Works.

Chunky yarn plus a bulky join is a bad combo. This one adds no bulk at all and leaves only tiny fibre specks.
