Tasuka stood at the threshold.  She watched Yugiri maneuver through the wreckage without so much as a single misstep.  It burned her up inside.  To step into this place, she’d never had the courage to do that.  This had been the funeral pyre for her deepest wishes, the grave of the one single thing she’d desired in her life.  When you left, it wasn’t your happiness alone you buried.    Had she always been afraid to face it?  This reality?  Her conversation with Bris in the hot springs flooded back into her mind.  It wasn’t just an arm and an eye she took from me.  Tasuka felt her eyes burning.  No, Valeria bas Martialis had done more than that.  The Garlean commander had severed Bris - wholly and entirely - from all of the world.  There was nobody left on the entire star who could reach Brisingr Amur.  For her, Tasuka thought, the only other life truly existing was Valeria. And yet…

The memory was... strange. There one moment, gone the next. Like a fleeting daydream, a mote of dust dancing in the sunlight, clearly in his sight then vanishing to nothing the instant he would try to reach out and grasp it. Sometimes it disturbed him, this sudden fixation he would have on... something. Or was it someone? Once the moment had passed, he could not remember. Emet-Selch, the sharpest of their number, had initially responded with curiosity when Elidibus had confided in him this concern. "Hm. And you say you have no recollection at all of what it is you have so briefly remembered so many times?" "No. None." "... And you still object to the use of your crystal?" Elidibus had shaken his head, firm in his conviction. "If it is a choice between remembering now only to forget later, and forgetting entirely, I would sooner choose the latter. This anomaly is... an irritating distraction from my duty. I only wish to better serve our star."

With a downward glance, Zenos saw the sheathed katana. "Yotsu, I-" "Enough of this shite!" Fordola put her hands on Yotsu and guided her gently away from the open elevator door. "We don't have time for this! Go, Yotsu! I'll keep these morons safe!" Apprehension burned through Alisaie's veins like ceruleum. Was this the right decision? Could she even do it? Would Yugiri do it? But that didn't matter. Bris would do it. "Yotsu! The bridge!" Alisaie said. "Please! You're better at running things than me! I can be the sword, but I need you to be my eyes and arm!" Yotsu looked stone-faced at the trio. Then she nodded and turned. She bolted across the halls to a separate elevator. "Well," Zenos said. "I am beginning to think you Eorzeans are simply obsessed with suicide missions." Alisaie flashed a sharp grin. "Got a pretty good track record though, aye?"

Like staring into the depths of a sea of gold. Pay no heed to how your skin crawls, the feeling of cool smooth fingers cradling your heart. He will probe. He will listen. He will open your body and lay your soul out bare for him. It is his first trap. Behind you, a thin line crackles across the ice. He will change. He will act as your perfect companion. Asking all the right questions and reacting in all the right ways. A siren beckoning you closer to the deepest part of the lake, either softly around the cracks already showing, or right for the weakest point.
