We are practically invisible to detection – even the best seismographs in Casperix failed to identity the blasting used to shape parts of this interior. Third, we are protected from incursion. Each entrance is sealed with a steel door that could resist even the most violent explosives alchemy can create. The men who guard those doors must work in tandem to lock and unlock this vault, making foreign entry impossible. Even under duress, they can scuttle the locking mechanism from outside.”

HER EYES FLICKED to just beyond Elisa’s shoulder and landed on Pin. “And who’s this?”

Elisa glanced back but gave a dismissive shrug before she turned to face Vera again. Her smile had become a little more guarded. “Just some kid looking for a bite. I guess I felt bad.”

“How charitable.” Vera looked at the blindfolded girl and let her pity show plainly. “I bet she could make money fucking the guys too ugly to touch. She wouldn’t know any better, would she?” Elisa winced and her tolerant countenance vanished entirely.

“What do you want, Vera?” Elisa asked impatiently. “Last time I saw you you said you’d rather keep working in daddy’s bar than ‘waste your time bending over on the corner.’ Real nice phrasing, by the way. Did getting your ass grabbed for free all night change your mind?”

“Just as prickly as usual,” Vera replied with an easy grin. She tipped her head back, refreshing her hair with a somewhat triumphant shake of her head and sweep of her hand. “I heard you haven't been in the Court as much lately, at least not since that Ambassador picked you up. Spend all his pretty pennies already?”

THE TOXINS WERE entirely absent for six precious weeks (forty-one days to be precise), comprised of the twenty-one days it took the annuals to mature from emergent stems, the twelve days of idle splendor where the petals switched between states before their rapid disintegration, and the eight days before the first shoots broke through the earth. After the smoke bloom, contaminate levels returned to lethal quantities within as few as six hours and steadily increased in the weeks that followed until their peak. Theories abounded about the impacts of weather and water supply, of competing flora or insect populations, but very little correlation had been found between external factors and the rate of increase or decay in the potency of the poisons, proven by how quickly a fist-sized field mouse perished when paired with a dated soil sample. After building a literal mountain of noxious rodent bodies (the disposal of which was of brief concern until someone had the bright idea to simply bury them in the same deadly meadows that bore their fate), the scientists formally declared that something strange must be lurking below the mothercorm.
