Synopsis:
Exhausted, battered, and suffering from the lingering phantom pain of his cellular regeneration, Tech E. Coyote is pushed to his absolute physical limit. Seeing his boyfriend suffer in silence, Rev Runner steps in to offer support—only for an unexpected piece of mail to interrupt their afternoon. An invitation arrives from Dr. Iq Hi, the legendary scientist and mentor who inspired Tech’s passion for engineering before the meteor strike. “How big is Patch exactly?”

Weiss looked off the road to the rows of cultivated trees they were passing. The copse didn’t let much sunlight in at all, and she could see patches of mushrooms alongside a simple footpath twisting through the trees. As they twisted around the path, they came to a clearing featuring a stretch of several houses sitting on large sections of fenced off short grass with several stone footpaths with piles of long wrapped bundles of harvested grass.

“Bigger than the villages we saw in Anima, I guess it’s a kind of town?” Yang frowned and looked around. “I don’t know. It started as a bunch of individual settlements that just sort of grew together.”

“So, I guess that’s why it’s called Patch.” Blake walked between them as they worked their way around the road.

“I mean… Vale was built into a mountain vale, so… yeah, it’s a running naming pattern.” Yang shrugged and smiled. “Okay, the restaurant is up here.”

They’d been to restaurants that included an outdoor section, but from what Weiss could see the entire eating area was outdoors here. She could see hooks along poles and after a moment, recognized them as places to attach tarps if the eating area needed to be sheltered from rain, but those weren’t needed at the moment. A rope hanging between the two poles closest to the road suspended a wooden shingle reading The Threaded Skewer.

“What’s a threaded skewer?” Blake apparently had the same question that Weiss did.

“I think it’s just trying to match with the inn.” Yang shrugged and pointed to the side of the restaurant.

Right next door was a long, two-story building with thick wooden walls and several small windows. Above the double door entrance into the building a swinging wooden sign depicting a threadbare patchwork quilt and the words The Frayed Patchwork Inn.

She knew at least she likely needed to climb the mountain to find her way around, but the very notion of doing so provided more risk than she wanted to believe. The Pokémon along the pass were hardened by nature, enticed by the frequency of prey in the form of unsuspecting human beings that traveled amongst them obliviously. Mightyena and Beartic weaved through the wintry alpine with an unbridled thirst for blood, pursuing her with immeasurable and cautious silence when she chose to ascend the snowy path with the relentless cold bleeding into her skin through the coat.
The winding path drew ever onward and ever upward, to a craggy spire that threatened to pierce the sky. She rose upon the steep side of the mountain through narrow clearings of dead pines, rocky passages, and treacherous cliffs, still sensing the presence of predators stalking her, leaving her only capable of keeping a solid grip on the poké ball that contained her Zorua.
Closer to the peak, the storm grew perceptibly worse, her visibility decreasing to just a few yards ahead of her as heavy snowfall almost utterly obscured her vision. With the hope she could accrue enough warmth, she wrapped her arms around her and moved onward as the grounds became more arduous and slippery, as if explicitly designed to keep travelers from reaching the summit and descending the mountain on the other side. With the copious stories of the lost, many nowadays frequented the train or drove along the roads to avoid traversing the Twisting Pass entirely.
