I’m presenting a Het Talk at UNC Research Week! As a recipient of the Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prizes for Scholarly Achievement, I will present about my research on Young Planets.

The live webinar is limited to UNC (unc.zoom.us/webinar/regi...). The talks will go on YouTube later. 🔭🧪 #exoplanets

Poetry Corner

So. Farewell
Then
Leap second.

Cause of joy
And agony
For all timekeepers everywhere.

Now we will have
Leap hours instead.

Which will not cause
Any problems whatsoever.
Obviously.

The Stellar-MADE project team (nicolascuello.github.io/Stellar-MADE/) is studying multiple #stellarsystems, and exploring whether the #exoplanets that form within them are different to those that emerge from single stellar systems, as Professor Nicolás Cuello explains.

FUN FACT: In 1990, we knew 0 planets orbiting other stars. By 2025, NASA's count hit over 6,000!

The Milky Way likely has at least one planet per star. The universe really outdid itself.

Pretty neat: using time-resolved spectra of an exoplanet transit, you can get temperatures and composition as a function of planet longitude. Another way to look at the 3D structure of Hot Jupiter atmospheres, thanks to JWST.

Temperature as a function of longitude (angle w.r.t. anti-stellar point) in a polar plot. Temperatures are much cooler on the nightside than on the day-side (about 900 versus 1500 K).

Portrait of lead author Emma Postolec with a card showing the paper title "Evolutionary pathways toward survival of a thick CO2- or SO2-rich atmosphere on the lava world TOI-561 b" and the co-author list.Three-panel plot of the 19 simulated TOI-561 b cases that match observations at 11 Gyr. Panel a shows temperature-pressure profiles reaching 3400-3500 K at 1,000 to 30,000 bar over a magma ocean surface. Panel b shows stacked bars of atmospheric volume mixing ratios, split into CO2-dominated cases at low S/H and SO2-dominated cases at higher S/H. Panel c compares initial and present-day C, H, O, N, and S budgets split between atmosphere and interior.
