Indeed, years before Genealogy of Morals, Darwin had argued that our moral principles had evolved from social instincts.

I wrote about that here (paywall): https://muse.jhu.edu/article/676147/pdf

Friedrich Nietzsche was born OTD in 1844.

He derided Darwin’s theory, but On Truth and Lies explores the human mind as evolved. And Genealogy of Morals treats the evolution (“genealogy”) of our moral principles as more deeply revealing than their content.

Great episode on animal tool use by @auersperga.bsky.social!

This is a topic we care deeply about. In a recent 📄, we propose a taxonomy of different forms of tool use, and discuss how the ‘tooling’ framework fits with traditional accounts: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Article tackles the megabias of the diminishing soft-body preservation in the fossil record:
The explanation rests on the proposition, that it was caused by the proliferation of colagen enzyme diversity in bacteria and archaea.

Whaaat? Flightless bird ("Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis... from southeastern China") in the Jurassic? Dude you literally just learned to fly and you are immediately dropping this superpower.

What a wonderful reconstruction. Two alien-looking stem crocodiles enjoying rather unusual prey -- relatives of Archosaurs--turtles. Reminds us that the evolution of crocodiles was dynamic and current forms cover small portion of their diversity.

So, apparently the genetic diversity and the presence of structure is not a remedy for the extinction. At least for endemics on islands.
