The lack of music and jokes, with the utilization of an expert narrator, leads individuals to trust a documentary more. It seems professionally put together and serious, and it highlights the time and work that went into bringing the documentary to fruition. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

Ideas for a documentary can come from crime, nature, religion, war, or any other serious matter. It is assumed that telling such stories will ensure accuracy, with the discovery of relevant resources to keep the story entertaining without exaggeration. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

What I currently believe makes something a documentary is not using actors to reenact something. Using actors is just people trying to play a truth, which can be inaccurate. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

Last one: I trust it more if the topic feels serious (crime, history, nature). Assumption: serious subject = serious honesty. But Planet Earth adds fake music swells, and true crime reenacts half the story, so the topic doesn’t promise anything. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

Shaky camera, bad lighting, no music? I instantly trust it more. Assumption: messy = unedited = real. But someone still picked where to point the camera and what to cut. Raw-looking isn’t the same as raw. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

Narrator + experts + interviews = I trust it. Assumption: a calm voice and someone with a title means somebody checked the facts. But honestly that’s just packaging. An AI script with a deepfake expert could look exactly the same. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

What I think makes something a documentary: real people, not actors. The assumption under that is that if no one’s acting, no one’s lying. The Nanook reading broke that for me lol. Where’d I get it? Probably Netflix and every History Channel doc from school. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

Something that stood out to me is how filmmakers can make something feel real without showing everything that happened. It makes me wonder how much information gets left out of documentaries.

I think a documentary is different from a regular recording because the filmmaker decides what parts of reality we get to see. As long as they aren't purposely misleading the audience, I think that's fair.

I always thought documentaries were supposed to show exactly what happened in real life. But now I realize filmmakers can change how we see things through editing, music, and camera angles. I think a documentary should still be honest with its viewers.

#hwa3 #documentarytrust -Interviews: I feel like a lot of documentaries I have seen involved interviews with people who are close to the subject
- Pictures
- voice memos
- really anything from the actual even that can prove to me as a viewer that this really did happen

@maddyc15.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 10:12 PM

#hwa5 #documentarytrust - real footage: I feel like when watching a true crime documentary I get more invested into the story and things become more clear is there is body cam footage, court footage, something from actual real life of the event that I can cling onto

@askully.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 6:35 PM

I think a documentary is a slightly altered true story to appeal to the viewers. There is a stigma around documentaries that touch the heart of the viewer, and I think that is part of why documentaries are made the way they are. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

documentaries to me are informative films about a certain topic with someone usually narrating information back to us. these views arise from
watching mainstream documentaries. because documentaries are non-fiction, the info they relay is easy to believe in and trust. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

#hwa5 #documentarytrust If content is enjoybale, entertaining, educational, etc. then take that for what it is. You dont need to cherry pick the title or message or meaning or whatever, Form your own opinion.

@jackryanmckee.bsky.socialOct 14, 2026, 2:17 AM

#hwa5 #documentarytrust I dont think it really matters what you think makes a doc or not. Somethings genre title should not describe what you take or learn from it. People will get so upset that something is a doc and fabricated etc, that doesnt really matter to me

@elijahawad.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 9:32 PM

I usually think of a documentary as something that shows real people, animals, and experiences rather than a story. I trust real conversations and natural interactions because they seem less controlled, although I realize that editing can still influence what we see. #hwa5 #documentarytrust

@ryanl26.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 2:26 AM

I don't think a documentary is like a CCTV recording, but rather like real life shaped by these filmmakers' choices. I think unscripted dialogue, instead of a script, makes it feel more authentic. As long as these "unspoken contracts" don't deceive me as a viewer, it's okay.
