A face, & body, only a mother could love? A fly from the Anthomyiidae family, feeding on a Willow Leaf. I don't have the skills to try to identify it further! Whilst it's not "cute" it's certainly fascinating to see close up. #diptera #MacroMonday #wildlifefrommywindow #invertebrates

A fly viewed side on from the same level, as it sits on a bright green leaf, against a black background. The fly's eye has caught the light so that each lens can be seen, and its mouthpart is extended, pushing the bristly 'tounge' against the leaf surface as it feeds. The thorax is pale with thick, dark, but sparse, long black hairs emerging from it. The abdomen is covered in shorter fluffier black hairs, but still thin enough that the exoskeleton can be seen underneath. The wings are folded and are being viewed along their edge, so look very thin.

I assume it is impossible to identify this fly seen on Willow in East Yorkshire last week? Even to genus? Egle? Dalia?

I am guessing Egle ciliata but that is not a very well-informed guess.

Phaonia rufiventris bewijst hier even dat niet elke vlieg zwart en harig is. Deze is voornamelijk rood en harig. De larven ontwikkelen zich voornamelijk in paddenstoelen, lees ik op de geweldige Flickr site van Steven Falk: www.flickr.com/photos/63075... #diptera #ElkeDagEenInsect

A large bristly black fly with two prominent yellow bands on the end of its abdomen sits on a passiflora leaf.Another view of the Butterbutt fly from the butt end. The yellow bands on the abdomen have a greenish iridescence and a row of black spiky bristles between them, also the fly has yellow feet which I think are kinda cute for some reason. De Snorzweefvlieg - vroeger Pyjamazweefvlieg - heet in het Engels Marmalade hoverfly, verwijzend naar die dwarsstreepjes op het achterlijf. Een deel migreert in de winter naar het zuiden. Dit is een mannetje: ogen tegen elkaar aangegroeid, om vrouwtjes beter te spotten. #diptera #ElkeDagEenInsect

Twee verwanten: Phaonia trimaculata (vrouw) en Phaonia Tuguriorum (man). De eerste is een stuk schaarser, larven parasiteren op o.a. de larven van de Koolvlieg (Delia radicum), de tweede is het hele jaar door te zien, parasiteert op emelten (larven van langpootmuggen). #diptera #ElkeDagEenInsect
