For the first thing, it only worked because it's niche and fits the bill of people on here / interested […]

Tomorrow! Join us in the IRIS Center for a research talk on the aesthetic value of AI creativity. How do we grapple with AI's seemingly creative outputs, and what does it mean for human and cultural values?

Friday, 10/16/26, 12:00-1:00 PM
IRIS Center (Peck Hall 2226)

#DigitalHumanities #AI

The Aesthetic Value of AI Creativity
Generative AI is increasingly improving at creating content that appears novel and creative. Regardless of whether AI is, or can ever be, creative like humans, they seem to be creative when, for example, based solely on a few sentences they can come up with a design or image that is not a copy of any other images or designs you can find. But how can we make sure that AI's creative capacity is valuable, that is, that what they generate aligns with our human and cultural values?

In this talk, I will explore this question specifically in relation to AI-generated art: how can AI-generated art be aesthetically valuable? Drawing on how state-of-the-art generative AI models work, I will argue that although AI-generated art can present formal values, AI models lack the capacity to aesthetically realize moral and cultural values.

As we asked what it looks like to work towards spatial justice, as individuals and through collective, collaborative efforts, #DigitalHumanities projects provide some starting points: From archival recovery projects, to critical data projects, to supportive networks that deliberately cross borders.

Who keeps bringing up Homer? 📜

Explore Testimonia’s machine-detected connections—from author to passage to source.

Fair warning: “just one connection” can become your afternoon.

Screenshot of Testimonia with Homer selected. A web of blue, purple, and green threads connects Homer to labeled authors including Plato, Aristotle, Strabo, Plutarch, Cicero, and Athenaeus. The right panel reports 2,421 machine-detected citations by 155 authors and 588 lines found. A visible caution says some detections are wrong and many are missed. A ranked list of citing authors includes buttons to explore their passages. Search, group filters, Web and Timeline controls appear above the graph.

I'm looking for someone who has (successfully) submitted something to DH2026 or earlier.
[I mean the international conference: https://dh2027.adho.org/

I want to get a feeling if a submission for DH2027 would be time well spent :)

Ancient authors had reading lists too. 📜

Strabo names Polybius while discussing Homer in Geography 1.2.9. Follow the connection in Testimonia and inspect the machine-detected matches yourself.

Screenshot of Testimonia, an interactive map of citations in ancient literature. On the left, Strabo and Polybius are outlined and connected within a web of colored author nodes. The right panel, titled “Strabo cites Polybius,” lists 28 machine-detected passages and warns readers to check the evidence. The first entry is Geography 1.2.9.1, with Greek text naming Polybius and highlighting shared wording. Source links lead to Perseus. The featured passage discusses Homer and the mixing of truth with fiction.
