Superiority Is Our Defense Against Our Felt Inferiority

Regardless, we will increasingly build up this superiority defense and its resulting Ego for the purpose of beating back the otherwise debilitating feelings of insecurity and inferiority. We have a confused and unsteady consciousness, creating an alternate reality from Nature.

Wordism

The result is a situation akin to what Plato described in his “Allegory of the Cave.” For the result is that words suffuse our minds and distract us from actual Reality with a non-stop stream of nonsensical repetitions of word symbols. We tout our wordism as a supreme accomplishment, instead of the aberration, the flaw in our reality perceptors, that it actually is. This causes us to never really hear or understand each other. For these word symbols not only imprison and isolate us in a world of swirling bookmarks of Reality, but they are tagged to but dimly reflective of Reality.

Nonetheless, the basis even of these goes further back. It all begins in infancy, even as a neonate, where one, upon coming out of the womb, discovers one’s needs are not going to be adequately attended to. They will not be very well noticed. You will not be all that important to “them.” Not as important as you should be, if you were to get your needs satisfied and to thrive. Since the definition of being loved is having one’s needs taken care of, you will not feel loved for who you are. Yes, going back even to the time of birth this is true. And even prior to that — in the womb and especially during the time of fetal malnutrition, where we found ourselves suffocating and starving — we feel an outside world has turned on us and is attacking us, hardly supporting and “loving” us for who we are.

With that deprivation and those feelings of being unseen and unloved in place already by the time of infancy, it is only a matter of more time, then, before one will begin to turn that into, “I cannot be loved for who I am, so who should I be, then?” These are the philosophic bands that arise at birth, importantly including the prime directives of life — “Who am I?” and “Who to be?” One’s earlier human nature and innate Divinity were forgotten in the trauma of birth, leaving one an Ego — one that is blank, a tabula rasa.1 And upon that blank slate will be imprinted the behaviors and the messages from those behaviors that one gets from one’s parents, especially one’s mother.

Furthermore, this schizoid tendency in humans sets up a funda- mental insecurity regarding Reality and Nature — a feeling of inferiority and insecurity and uncertainness about oneself and one’s nature. However, such feelings require a compensatory mechanism. That compensatory mechanism is Ego — quite different from the self of other beings in Nature. For Ego is comprised of the compensatory mechanisms of denial, inflation of self, and superiority vis–à–vis Nature, the All That Is, and Nature-God Itself.2

Ego Tells Us We are Superior to Nature

Part of this repression and compensation means that impairments that we have because of our unique birth and insufficient satisfaction of early needs, such as language, will be touted as proof of our superiority over Nature. We have no inkling that the superiority belief is a result of our prematurity and its consequences of uncomfortable feelings of insecurity and inferiority.

…that, one needs to have had an experience where such a selling of Self, or soul, was imposed upon one ... was “an offer one cannot refuse,” so to speak. This experience is what happens around the ages of four and five in a specific way, and it is stretched out more generally over the period three to six years old.

The primal scene — that definitive event that encapsulates the process in one distinct and memorable scene — occurs around four or five years old. This event creates what Arthur Janov (1970) — psychologist and inventor of primal therapy — termed the split. The split is the final creation of a self — termed by Janov the unreal self — that is inauthentic and in keeping with parents’ wishes; and another one that is hidden, repressed, yet authentic, which Janov termed the real self.

However, the Oedipal and Electra crises, which are the larger categories of this process — regardless how outdated and misunderstood those concepts are — occurs over the period three to six.

Anyway, this near infinite variation of human personality results in near infinite differences in the ways newborns will be attended to and nurtured. Newborns are helpless and dependent on the good will of their caregivers to survive and thrive; and the differences in the good will, or lack thereof, and skill and intelligence of caregivers is, of course, as varied as are the differences between human personalities.

These differences in personality, affecting the differences in the ways newborns will be cared for, create the vast differences and myriad possibilities of personalities that people can have. This deter- mines the kind of caregiver people become as adults. This, in turn, affects how those caregivers will care or not care for their newborns, and so on around again.
