We now include Marie Maynard Daly's contributions in our Year 1 lecture course on 'Biological Chemistry', which introduces the structures, functions & importance of different classes of biomolecules, including lipids like cholesterol. #DecolonisingChemistry

As part of our #DecolonisingChemistry curriculum project work @chemistryatyork.bsky.social, we now highlight the work of Marie Maynard Daly, the first black woman to receive a chemistry PhD in the USA. Her work developed a mechanistic understanding of heart disease, transforming patient care.

We now present this story, which examines medicinal chemistry, ethics, race, gender, and legacy, alongside our Year 1 module on 'Carbonyl Chemistry' as part of our initiative to decolonise and diversify the curriculum here

One of the most interesting biographies I discovered during my #DecolonisingChemistry project for the @chemistryatyork.bsky.social curriculum was that of Alice Ball a black chemist, whose leprosy treatment, using carbonyl chemistry to build on traditional medicine, was stolen by a male colleague.

Portrait of Alice Ball including images of the Chaulmoogra plant and its conversion into a leprosy treatment.

I will also tag each of the stories that I share with the hashtag #DecolonisingChemistry to help them be found. #ChemSky

One of the most fascinating stories, completely new to me, was that of gold-plating. In particular, I enjoyed learning about the remarkable chemistry performed by the Inca in South America to create golden objects from 'tumbaga' using selective redox chemistry. #DecolonisingChemistry
