The humour works on two levels. The deceased retain their anonymity even in death, their headstones offering evasive or hostile replies instead of identifying information. But the inscriptions could also be their actual last words, suggesting that some witnesses met an unfortunate end despite being under protection.
The cartoon leaves both possibilities open, preserving the identities of the dead along with the mystery of how they died.
