The proceedings were held behind closed doors because, it was argued, CVLT was particularly active in the US, had sought to intimidate victims and witnesses and had threatened US prosecutors.

Cult About 20 victims were identified, but others could not be contacted, prosecutors said. Others accused in the case were three US citizens, according to reports, including Kaleb Merritt, a 26-year-old from Texas who used the online nickname “eTerror”. Merritt is currently serving a 33-year prison sentence in the US. In March, Merritt, a convicted rapist, confessed to producing child sexual abuse material, including images of self-harm, for around 50 members of CVLT (pronounced “cult”), that espoused racist and antisemitic views and expressed hostility toward feminists and the LGBTQ community. It promoted “neo-nazism, nihilism, and paedophilia as its core principles”, according to a US Department of Justice statement. Investigators say CVLT members described themselves as “warlords” and referred to their victims as “slaves” or “housewives”. Investigators say the victims were targeted on Instagram and other social media and blackmailed by a group of men from the US, Germany and New Zealand who communicated on the popular messaging platform Discord.
