🌐 Artist of the Day: Refik Anadol

Refik Anadol turns data into dreams. His immersive installations transform information into moving color and light, blending artificial intelligence with human emotion. His work asks what machines dream of.

Refik Anadol stands with his arms folded against a softly blurred field of turquoise, blue and green light, wearing a black high-collared shirt and round glasses. The portrait is credited to Efsun Erkılıç and was used in press materials for Anadol’s 2025 in situ exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. That context matters: the exhibition, Living Architecture: Gehry, asked what happens when the formal memory of an architect becomes material for a machine. For the project, Anadol’s studio built a Large Architecture Model from an extensive archive of open-access images, sketches, plans and other records connected to Frank Gehry’s work. The result was not a digital imitation of Gehry, but a sequence moving from archive to data plotting, latent space and “machine hallucination,” using AI to generate new architectural possibilities in real time. It extended a question that has shaped Anadol’s practice for years: can data become pigment, and can a building become a responsive canvas rather than a fixed object? That 2025 project closed a loop in Anadol’s relationship with Gehry: in 2018, WDCH Dreams transformed 100 years of Los Angeles Philharmonic archives into machine-generated projections across Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, turning an architectural icon into a surface for memory. The portrait also captures Anadol just before another major shift in scale. In June 2026, he and Erkılıç opened DATALAND at The Grand LA, the Frank Gehry-designed complex across from Walt Disney Concert Hall. Conceived as a museum devoted to AI arts, it turns the ideas behind works like Living Architecture into an institution: galleries where data, computation, scent, sound and human presence continually reshape the experience. The calm studio portrait therefore sits beside a much larger ambition. Anadol is not only making images with AI; he is building spaces, systems and institutions around the question of how humans and machine intelligence might create together. At night in Las Vegas, the enormous Sphere glows like a planet against a black sky. Across its curved LED skin, green, blue, white and gold forms spread like coral, mineral deposits or microscopic life, making the building appear less like architecture than a living organism. The image shows Refik Anadol’s Machine Hallucinations: Sphere, which debuted on the Sphere’s Exosphere on September 1, 2023. The work was among Anadol’s most dramatic expansions of his idea of “AI Data Sculpture.” Rather than placing a moving image inside a rectangular screen, he treated the building itself as the medium. The Exosphere is roughly 366 feet high and 516 feet wide; Anadol’s 16-minute work uses its monumental surface for three chapters generated from vast image archives related to space and nature. His studio trained a dedicated AI model on subsets of those archives so that the system could generate new colors, forms and visual relationships from learned data rather than replaying a fixed photograph. The project also crystallized Anadol’s idea that architecture need not merely display digital art; its skin can become the artwork’s physical body, with scale, curvature and public visibility shaping what the data means. Machine Hallucinations had been developing since Anadol’s 2016 residency with Google’s Artists and Machine Intelligence program, where he began asking whether a machine that can learn might also “dream” or “hallucinate.” At Sphere, that research became civic-scale spectacle. A private computational process was projected into public space at the size of a landmark. Seen now, the work is also a bridge in Anadol’s evolution. The nature-like textures foreshadow the ecological focus that became central to his Large Nature Model and, by 2026, DATALAND in Los Angeles. The Sphere image captures a moment when his machine dreams stopped behaving like pictures on walls and began behaving like environments large enough to alter a city’s visual identity.A black-and-white portrait of Refik Anadol fills the frame, his round glasses and face emerging from darkness. Around him, three illustrated yellow-and-black bees glow beside a red flower whose petals are drawn like circuit boards, with green electronic traces forming the stem. The image accompanied GQ Middle East’s June 2026 profile, “How Refik Anadol Is Teaching Machines to Dream of Nature,” and visually compresses one of the biggest shifts in his practice: from machines dreaming about human archives to machines learning from ecosystems. At the center of that shift is the Large Nature Model, or LNM. Refik Anadol Studio built it from ecological material rather than ordinary language-model training corpora. By 2026, the studio described the project as drawing on more than 1.2 billion ecological data points, environmental recordings, scientific observations and field collections assembled with museums, scientists, conservation groups and research institutions. Earlier presentations trained models on rainforests, coral reefs, glaciers, flora, fungi and fauna. The goal is not simply to make digital pictures of nature, but to explore what machine intelligence might perceive when its “memory” is built from the living world. That research became the engine of DATALAND, the Los Angeles museum Anadol co-founded with Efsun Erkılıç and opened to the public in June 2026. Its inaugural exhibition, Machine Dreams: Rainforest, uses the LNM across five multisensory galleries, combining generative imagery with sound, scent and environmental information. DATALAND says its model relies on permission-based nature data and runs on a Google Cloud low-carbon compute zone. The bees and circuit-flower graphic therefore works almost like a manifesto: biology beside circuitry, pollination beside computation. It captures Anadol’s current question not as “Can AI make art?” but as something stranger: what kinds of imagination become possible when a machine is taught to attend to Earth?A lone visitor stands in a dark former boiler room as enormous blue, green, yellow and white currents of light spill across walls, floor and tall black columns. The person is nearly swallowed by the moving field, making the architecture itself seem liquid. This is Machine Hallucination, Refik Anadol’s 2019 immersive installation for the opening of ARTECHOUSE NYC beneath Chelsea Market, his first large-scale New York exhibition to use artificial intelligence. The work began with more than 100 million publicly available photographs of New York’s architecture and urban landscape. Anadol and his studio used machine-learning systems to organize and reinterpret that archive in a 1,025-dimensional latent space, then turned the results into a 30-minute experimental “cinema” presented at roughly 16K resolution with multichannel projection and 32-channel sound. Instead of showing recognizable landmarks one after another, the installation asked what the city’s accumulated visual memory might look like if processed by a machine. That choice was central to Anadol’s emerging idea of the “machine hallucination.” The computer was not being asked to document New York faithfully. It was being used as a collaborator that could find patterns across a visual archive too large for one human to absorb, then transform those relationships into a new spatial experience. Viewers did not stand in front of the image; they stood inside the data. The photograph is an important early chapter in the practice Anadol later expanded through MoMA’s Unsupervised, the Las Vegas Sphere, the Large Nature Model and DATALAND. It also shows how his methods have evolved. Machine Hallucination drew from massive public image collections of a human-built city; his current nature-focused work emphasizes permission-based ecological datasets and more explicit questions about provenance, sustainability and stewardship. The immersive language stayed. The ethics and subject of the archive kept growing.

📺 Artist of the Day: Nam June Paik

Known as the father of video art, Nam June Paik imagined a world where screens and creativity merged long before it became reality. His work transformed technology into a medium for play, reflection, and human connection.

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #Art #ArtSky

Nam June Paik leans over a small white spherical television, his chin resting on his hand and his fingers hooked around the set’s handle. His dark jacket nearly merges with the background while the convex screen glows blue with static. This 1981 portrait, credited to photographer Lim Young-kyun, turns Paik’s chosen material into part prop, part collaborator, part extension of the artist himself. By then, television had been Paik’s artistic language for nearly two decades. At his 1963 Exposition of Music – Electronic Television in Wuppertal, he presented altered TV sets whose electronics distorted ordinary broadcasts, treating the television not as a neutral appliance but as something an artist could compose. After moving to New York in 1964, he pushed further into portable video, performance and sculpture. With engineer Shuya Abe, he developed the Paik-Abe Video Synthesizer beginning in 1969, allowing electronic images to be mixed, colored and manipulated in real time. Global Groove in 1973 then imagined television as a fast-moving cross-cultural collage rather than a one-way national broadcast. That history changes the feeling of this portrait. Paik is not simply posing beside “new technology.” He had spent years taking television apart conceptually and physically, asking who controls the image, who receives it, and what happens when viewers become participants. The year after this photograph, the Whitney Museum mounted his 1982 retrospective, then the largest exhibition devoted to a single video artist, including large-scale installations such as V-yramid. Television had moved from the living room into the museum, and Paik had helped force that transition. Lim’s photograph catches him at the threshold: an artist resting casually on the machine he had already taught the art world to see differently.A monumental map of the United States stretches across a museum wall, built from hundreds of glowing television screens and traced state by state in red, green, blue, yellow and pink neon. Each region flickers with faces, landscapes, popular culture and moving images. This is Nam June Paik’s Electronic Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, created in 1995 and now in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The work measures roughly 15 by 40 feet and uses 336 television sets within a 51-channel video installation, plus custom electronics, steel, wood and hundreds of feet of neon tubing. The images inside each state are not random. Paik assembled personal associations, television history and American cultural shorthand into a country experienced through media. Arkansas mixes his longtime collaborator Charlotte Moorman with Bill and Hillary Clinton. Alabama includes documentary material from the Montgomery Bus Boycott, with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X on the soundtrack, complicating the romantic American fantasy of the open highway. In Washington, D.C., a live camera replaces a monitor, placing the viewer inside the electronic map. The title reaches back to 1974, when Paik submitted a report to the Rockefeller Foundation imagining an “electronic super highway,” a broadband network linking cities through satellites, cables, data systems and eventually fiber optics. He was not simply predicting the internet. He was asking what a connected media society might do to culture, education, politics and human relationships. By 1995, the World Wide Web was entering public life. Paik answered that moment with a map in which geography and electronic information are inseparable. America becomes a network of screens, each place understood through circulating images. The work is exuberant and seductive, but its question feels even sharper now: when screens become the roads through which we know a country, who decides what we see along the way?In a black-and-white photograph by Tom Haar from 1974, Nam June Paik stands at left and Shigeko Kubota at right in their Westbeth studio in New York, each holding a bulky portable video camera. Between them sits a rounded television showing a woman’s face, perched on an old cabinet beside the wide horn of an antique phonograph. Kubota wears a long dress printed with repeated female faces. The image resembles a family portrait, except the family is people, cameras, screens and machines. The photograph records a moment when portable video was still radically new. Sony’s Portapak made it possible for one artist to record outside a television studio, loosening moving images from the expensive infrastructure of broadcast production. Paik seized that freedom early, but this photograph also matters because Kubota was not merely his partner or assistant. She was a major video artist in her own right, a Fluxus participant who bought a Portapak in 1970 and developed an autobiographical practice merging video and sculpture. In 1974 she also began directing the video program at Anthology Film Archives, helping create space for the emerging medium. Paik and Kubota married in 1977 and sometimes collaborated, including on Merce by Merce by Paik. Yet their approaches remained distinct. Kubota later pushed back against assumptions that she imitated Paik, describing their practices as “water and oil.” Her work moved toward memory, travel, nature and sculptural video environments while Paik increasingly pursued mass communication, broadcast networks and spectacular electronic installations. Seen with that history, Haar’s photograph is more than an image of “the father of video art” with his wife. It shows two artists inside the unstable birth of a medium, each holding technology that let artists record their own lives, manipulate television’s authority and build alternatives to mainstream broadcasting. The cameras are not accessories. They are declarations of authorship.Inside the circular atrium of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Gwacheon, South Korea, television screens rise in concentric tiers into a towering electronic spire. The monitors glow with shifting color and moving imagery, narrowing toward the skylight. This is Nam June Paik’s The More, The Better, completed in 1988, his largest permanent video installation and a defining monument of electronic art. The sculpture contains 1,003 monitors on a steel structure. The number is meaningful: 10/03 evokes October 3, Korea’s National Foundation Day. Paik had left Korea during the Korean War and built his career across Japan, Germany and the United States, but by the 1980s he was using satellite broadcasts to collapse cultural distance. Good Morning, Mr. Orwell linked New York and Paris in 1984. Bye Bye Kipling connected Seoul, Tokyo and New York in 1986. The More, The Better arrived as South Korea prepared to host the 1988 Seoul Olympics and was switched on September 15, two days before the Games opened. Paik’s satellite project Wrap Around the World carried the installation to an international audience. Its title came from scale itself. When the planned number of televisions seemed too small for the museum’s rotunda, Paik embraced multiplication. More screens meant more images, more information, more points of contact. The result resembles a pagoda, monument, broadcast tower and futuristic city at once, turning television into architecture. Later history makes Paik’s questions about technology even richer. Aging CRT components and fire risks forced the museum to shut it down in 2018. After a major conservation project, it was reactivated in 2022. Hundreds of damaged CRTs were repaired or replaced, while obsolete small screens were fitted with modern flat-panel displays inside preserved housings. A work about technological abundance became a conservation puzzle: when the machines of media history die, what must survive for the artwork to remain itself?

🎤 Artist of the Day: Rina Sawayama

Rina Sawayama fuses pop, rock, and digital nostalgia into powerful statements about identity and belonging. Her sound breaks genre and cultural boundaries, proving that authenticity is the most revolutionary art form.

#CreatorsAtWork #MusicianSky #MusicSky #Art

Rina Sawayama sits against an intense red studio backdrop on a black chair above a reflective, water-slicked floor, wearing a white cutout top, dark blue fitted trousers, and black heels. The portrait is by Thurstan Redding and became the cover image for “This Hell,” released May 18, 2022 as the lead single from Hold the Girl. The photograph introduced a new era for Sawayama after the maximalist Y2K collage of her 2020 debut SAWAYAMA. Its stripped-down red field, sculptural chair, hard light, and almost confrontational pose frame her less as a conventional pop star than as someone staging a scene. That matters because “This Hell” is itself an act of theatrical reclamation. Sawayama wrote the country-pop song while thinking about LGBTQ+ people being condemned or denied rights in the name of religious belief. Instead of answering shame with solemnity, she turns damnation into community, humor, camp, and chosen-family solidarity. The Western influence came partly from female country artists including Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, and Kacey Musgraves, whose direct storytelling helped shape the wider Hold the Girl era. The image’s controlled artificiality also reflects how deliberately Sawayama authors her visuals. Redding photographed the campaign, Chester Lockhart handled creative direction, Jordan Kelsey styled it, Mona Leanne did makeup, Jake Gallagher hair, Angel’s Nailz nails, and Miguel Bento designed the set. The resulting picture marks a career pivot: SAWAYAMA had established her as a genre-collaging critic of capitalism, racism, family trauma, and belonging; Hold the Girl turned that same maximalism inward, using therapy, reparenting, and queer survival as raw material for stadium-sized pop. This image is the doorway into that chapter. Hold the Girl would soon arrive as a record about younger selves, family wounds, shame, and healing. The portrait looks polished enough to feel untouchable, but it is built around a song about refusing to face judgment alone.Rina Sawayama stands against a saturated yellow background in a glossy white asymmetrical dress that wraps over her head like a hood, with matching gloves and a flowering branch reaching into the frame from the left. Her gaze is angled away from the camera, making the portrait feel both ceremonial and futuristic. The image comes from Sawayama’s 2022 Hold the Girl campaign and was photographed by longtime collaborator Thurstan Redding, whose portraits supplied much of the visual language surrounding the album. It arrived as Sawayama was moving beyond the debut-era question of “Who am I between cultures?” toward a harder one: “How do I care for the younger version of myself who learned to disappear?” Hold the Girl grew from an intense period of therapy during the pandemic. Sawayama has described the title song as beginning with a revelation about reparenting and learning to protect the child she had neglected through years of people-pleasing, shame, depression, and survival. The album also revisited her relationship with her Japanese identity, her mother, immigrant family dynamics, queerness, and the emotional cost of trying to fit into British life. That history gives the white drapery here a useful tension. It can read as armor, veil, cocoon, or costume without needing one fixed symbolic answer. Against the almost artificial yellow, Sawayama looks less documented than transformed. That transformation is central to her practice. She has repeatedly treated fashion, beauty, music, and video as parts of the same storytelling system, and she began her career partly through modeling before gaining access to couture houses and major publications. By 2022, that visual fluency had become part of the architecture of the music itself. The portrait captures Sawayama at the point where pop spectacle and emotional excavation fully merge: a performer using image-making not to hide vulnerability, but to give it form, scale, and control.Rina Sawayama kneels against a soft pink studio backdrop beneath an enormous circular black Schiaparelli hat, wearing a sculptural black bustier-and-shorts look, layered gold chains, long dark hair, and heels. A small gold sphere with a ring around it sits near her hand like a miniature Saturn. Nathaniel Goldberg photographed the image for ELLE’s June/July 2022 issue, styled by Alex White, as Sawayama was preparing to launch Hold the Girl and step into a much larger public arena. ELLE identified the look as Schiaparelli Haute Couture with Cartier jewelry, and Sawayama singled the ensemble out as a favorite, describing the hat as roughly “ring-of-Saturn” scale. She had spent years working as a model while independently building her music, often confronting an industry with little precedent for a Japanese-born British pop star who refused to stay in one category. Her 2020 debut then broke through during lockdown, earning acclaim while denying her the normal cycle of touring. At the same time, her exclusion from Mercury Prize and BRIT eligibility because she lacked a British passport turned her biography into an argument about who gets counted as British. After she spoke out, the rules changed. By this ELLE shoot, Sawayama was also preparing for her feature-film debut as Akira in John Wick: Chapter 4. She later explained that her music videos had doubled as an acting portfolio, intentionally giving her room to perform characters, fight, and build cinematic worlds. That makes the fashion here more than decoration. The oversized silhouette, surreal planetary prop, and controlled pose show the same instinct that runs through her music: take references that should not logically coexist, then make them feel inevitable. Couture, camp, pop, cinema, and autobiography become one language. The image records the moment Sawayama stopped looking like an emerging artist asking for entry and started looking like someone constructing her own universe.Rina Sawayama poses against a glittering gold backdrop with her hair pulled into two small buns and extended into extraordinarily long black fringe panels that frame her head and body. Pearl-like strands crisscross her torso over a pale cutout garment, while metallic makeup and elongated styling make the portrait feel part human, part fashion sculpture. The image belongs to the visual world of SAWAYAMA, photographed by Hendrik Schneider in late 2019 with creative direction by Ben Ditto, styling by Danielle Emerson, hair by Yusuke Morioka, makeup by Ana Takahashi, and nails by Lauren Michelle Pires. Schneider’s images were used across the album era, including press, packaging, and related single artwork. This is the chapter where Sawayama’s visual identity and musical thesis lock together. Her 2020 debut took the glossy language of late-1990s and early-2000s pop, R&B, nu-metal, arena rock, and electronic music and rebuilt it around questions of family, race, consumerism, queerness, and belonging. She has said old family photographs were a backbone of the record, helping her understand her parents as people formed by their own histories rather than fixed parental roles. Songs such as “STFU!” confronted anti-Asian microaggressions, “XS” paired luxury-pop excess with a critique of consumption, and “Chosen Family” centered the kinship queer people build for themselves. The styling mirrors that collision. Pearls and glitter suggest glamour, but the body is segmented by cutouts, chains, and severe geometry. It captures Sawayama before the scale of her career changed dramatically: before Elton John collaborated with her, before the BRIT eligibility fight, before Hold the Girl, and before John Wick. Already present was the method that carried through all of it: using pop’s polished surfaces to smuggle in messier questions about identity, power, memory, and who gets to define the person in the frame.

🌺 Artist of the Day: Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo painted pain, identity, and rebirth into vivid self-portraits that still speak across time. Her work was both intimate and universal, turning vulnerability into power and art into defiance.

fridakahlo.org

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #Art #ArtSky

Black-and-white portrait of Frida Kahlo photographed by her father, Guillermo Kahlo, in Coyoacán on October 16, 1932. She faces the camera directly, hair center-parted and pinned back, wearing dangling earrings, layered necklaces, and a dark woven shawl. Her expression is steady and unsmiling, the plain gray background leaving her face to carry the image. The date makes this portrait especially charged. Earlier that year Frida and Diego Rivera had moved to Detroit for Rivera’s Detroit Industry mural commission. In July, after a traumatic miscarriage, Kahlo painted Henry Ford Hospital, turning blood, anatomy, grief, and the hospital bed into an unusually direct visual account of reproductive loss. Then, in September, she hurried back to Mexico after learning that her mother, Matilde Calderón, was gravely ill. Matilde died on September 15. Matilde had taught Frida a love of sewing, fabrics, and texture, giving the shawl here resonance. One month and one day later, Frida sat for this photograph by Guillermo. We cannot know what father and daughter intended the portrait to say, but its timing places it between two immense losses and a year in which Kahlo’s art became more insistently autobiographical. Guillermo was not simply a relative with a camera. A professional architectural photographer, he had photographed Frida since childhood, creating a visual record that predates the self-fashioned image she later constructed in paint and in collaborations with major photographers. Here that transformation is already visible. The shawl, jewelry, direct gaze, and composed stillness are not decorative details alone. Kahlo was developing a public image rooted in Mexican dress and self-possession while her paintings transformed private bodily history into modern art. The photograph catches her before worldwide “Frida” iconography hardened into legend: 25 years old, grieving, physically vulnerable, and already learning how powerfully an artist could author her own image.Frida Kahlo’s 1940 Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. Kahlo faces us from a dense wall of green leaves, her joined eyebrows, faint mustache, braided hair, and calm gaze rendered with precise detail. A necklace of thorns bites into her neck and draws small drops of blood. A dead black hummingbird hangs at her throat; a spider monkey grips the thorns at one shoulder while a black cat watches from the other. Butterflies and dragonflies hover above her hair. Nothing in the image looks accidental, yet its symbols resist one fixed translation. Kahlo painted it during one of the most emotionally unsettled periods of her life. She and Diego Rivera divorced in late 1939 after a decade of marriage marked by devotion, political partnership, and affairs on both sides. Her long relationship with photographer Nickolas Muray had also ended as a romance. In 1940, while living independently and producing some of her strongest portraits, Kahlo turned her own body into a field where pain, nature, desire, Mexican visual culture, and endurance could coexist. The thorns evoke injury and sacrifice without reducing the image to victimhood: Kahlo remains upright, frontal, and almost unnervingly composed. The hummingbird, monkey, cat, insects, and vegetation have inspired religious, political, folkloric, and biographical readings, but the Harry Ransom Center notes that scholars interpret the work in multiple ways. That ambiguity is part of its power. The painting soon entered Muray’s collection and hung for decades in his New York apartment, where this intimate image of his former lover became part of daily family life before entering the Ransom Center collection in 1965. Kahlo and Rivera remarried in December 1940. Seen from that threshold, the portrait is not simply a picture of heartbreak. It is an act of self-construction by an artist insisting that suffering, love, cultural identity, and survival could occupy the same face without canceling one another.Black-and-white 1931 portrait of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera by Paul A. Juley, made in sculptor Ralph Stackpole’s studio in San Francisco. Rivera, in a three-piece suit, sits high on the arm of an upholstered chair and rests one arm around Kahlo. Frida sits below him in a patterned long skirt, dark rebozo, layered necklaces, earrings, and lace-up shoes, hands composed across her lap as both artists look toward the camera. The arrangement reflects a real imbalance in public recognition at the time. Rivera was already a celebrated muralist, invited to California for major commissions. Kahlo, in her early twenties and married to him since 1929, had not yet achieved comparable recognition. Yet San Francisco became an important stage in her emergence as an artist with a distinct language. The couple arrived in late 1930 while Rivera worked on murals for the San Francisco Stock Exchange and the California School of Fine Arts. Kahlo met physician Leo Eloesser, who became a lifelong friend and doctor, and entered a circle that included Stackpole and photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham. The Frida captured in these photographs was shaping the Mexican clothing and jewelry that would become part of her public image. More importantly, she was painting. In San Francisco she made Frieda and Diego Rivera, an intimate alternative to the monumental mural tradition surrounding her. The painting was shown in 1931 at the San Francisco Society of Women Artists, an early public appearance of her work in the United States. SFMOMA notes that her California period helped move her painting toward a more focused, folkloric portrait language grounded in nineteenth-century Mexican popular art. So this photograph records more than a famous marriage. Rivera may physically tower over her, but Kahlo was already building an artistic identity that would eventually stand apart from his. The camera catches that transition while it is still happening.Frida Kahlo’s The Two Fridas, painted in 1939. Two versions of Kahlo sit side by side against a stormy blue-gray sky, holding hands. The Frida at left wears a white European-style lace dress; the Frida at right wears a colorful Tehuana blouse and long skirt central to Kahlo’s public image. Both hearts are exposed. A thin artery connects them: the Tehuana Frida holds a tiny portrait of Diego Rivera, while the artery travels across both bodies until the white-dressed Frida clamps its severed end with surgical forceps. Blood stains her white skirt. At roughly 173 centimeters square, it was one of her largest works. Kahlo painted this double self-portrait in the year she and Rivera divorced, making private rupture visible through anatomy, clothing, and doubling rather than conventional narrative. Museo Frida Kahlo describes the costumes as invoking two strands of her origins, European heritage and Mexican tradition, connected heart to heart. The Museo de Arte Moderno also reads the work as a split between identities and notes Rivera’s fondness for her Tehuana dress. Those interpretations matter, but the painting exceeds a simple “loved Frida” versus “rejected Frida” equation. Both women are Kahlo; both bleed into the same circulatory system; and they hold one another’s hand. The work arrived when André Breton had promoted Kahlo as a Surrealist. In 1940 it appeared in the International Exhibition of Surrealism, yet Kahlo resisted the idea that she painted dreams, insisting that her imagery came from lived reality. The Two Fridas makes that position visible: emotional pain becomes exposed organs, identity becomes costume, and heartbreak becomes a shared bloodstream. Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes purchased the painting directly from Kahlo in 1947, and it later entered the Museo de Arte Moderno collection. What began in the aftermath of a marriage became one of modern art’s enduring images of a self refusing to be singular.

🖌️ Artist of the Day: M. F. Husain

M. F. Husain, also called the 'Picasso of India', painted with bold lines and boundless imagination. His work redefined Indian modernism, merging myth, movement, and emotion into sweeping stories of identity and nationhood

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #Art #ArtSky

Later-life portrait of M. F. Husain seated against a softly blurred field of orange, red, green, and blue. His long white hair and full white beard frame round dark glasses; he wears a white jacket and rests one hand near his neck. By the time this photograph was made, Husain’s own appearance had become nearly as recognizable as his paintings. That public image belonged to an extraordinary journey. Born in Pandharpur in 1915 and raised partly in Indore, Husain arrived in Bombay with little money and earned a living painting enormous cinema hoardings, designing toys, and decorating furniture. The scale and speed demanded by those billboards never really left his work. In the years around Indian independence and Partition, he joined F. N. Souza, S. H. Raza, K. H. Ara, H. A. Gade, and S. K. Bakre in the Progressive Artists’ Group, artists searching for a modern visual language that could engage international modernism without surrendering India’s own histories, myths, folk traditions, and daily life. For Husain, modernity was not a rejection of tradition but a way to make India’s composite culture newly visible after colonial rule and empire. Husain would spend decades painting horses, women, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Ramayana and Mahabharata, village life, cinema, and the idea of India itself. He also made films, including Through the Eyes of a Painter, which won a Golden Bear in Berlin in 1967. His stature was recognized by India with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, yet public acclaim did not protect him from political attack. Decades-old drawings became targets of organized protest in the 1990s and 2000s; lawsuits, vandalism, and threats followed. Husain left India in 2006, later accepted Qatari citizenship, and died in London in 2011. The calm face here therefore holds a contradiction: an artist celebrated as a national modernist who spent his final years unable to return safely to the country that remained the inexhaustible subject of his art.A huge horizontal M. F. Husain composition erupts in flat blocks of blue, red, yellow, green, orange, brown, white, black, and gray. Human and animal bodies overlap like frames from a film; at center, an orange elephant-headed Ganesha sits beside a small panel reading “Mahabharat” in Gujarati script. The image is widely reproduced under the label Mahabharat L, though I could not verify that as an original catalogue title. What is certain is the larger artistic world it belongs to. Husain returned again and again to the Mahabharata, not as a remote religious text but as an inexhaustible theatre of family loyalty, power, duty, violence, fate, and moral contradiction. His most famous engagement came in 1971, when he was invited to the São Paulo Biennial, where Picasso was also being shown. Husain responded with a monumental Mahabharata series, thinking on the scale of epic history and drawing on the visual confidence he had learned painting cinema hoardings. The 1971 cycle comprised 27 paintings, including Battle of Ganga and Jamuna, a meditation on ethical conflicts. Ganesha is especially meaningful here. In Hindu tradition, he is remembered as the scribe who wrote down the Mahabharata as the sage Vyasa dictated it, so placing his elephant head beside the word “Mahabharat” makes storytelling itself part of the scene. Husain fractures that story rather than illustrating one tidy episode. Bodies, weapons, architecture, gods, humans, and animals share the same visual plane, closer to memory or montage than conventional narrative painting. That was central to Husain’s modernism: Indian epics did not need to be preserved behind glass as the past. They could be cut apart, enlarged, accelerated, and made to speak to contemporary life. The result feels both ancient and immediate, an epic not remembered from a distance but still unfolding around us. The crowded composition works like visual argument: tradition is not frozen, and myth is not separate from the political present.Black-and-white photograph by Sharad Saxena of M. F. Husain and actor Madhuri Dixit at Art Today Gallery in New Delhi in 1995. Husain stands at left in profile, his white hair pushed back and glasses visible as he extends a long brush toward one of his paintings. Dixit stands beside him smiling, wearing a sleeveless dress, large earrings, and a long necklace, following the brush with her eyes. The painting shows a stylized bride-like woman at right while angular black forms cut across the composition. Along its lower edge Husain has handwritten a line beginning, “Th’ hand holding the burning diya stretches hard towards Madhuri, the bride in waiting.” The moment belongs to one of the strangest and most revealing chapters of his career: the modern painter in open conversation with Indian popular cinema. Husain had started out painting movie hoardings in Bombay, so film was never truly outside his visual education. Decades later, after repeatedly watching the 1994 blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, he became fascinated by Dixit’s screen presence. He painted her not simply as a celebrity portrait subject but as a shape-shifting muse, placing her into mythic, cinematic, historical, and imagined roles. This 1995 Art Today exhibition presented that obsession publicly. It would eventually expand into Gaja Gamini, Husain’s 2000 feature film starring Dixit, conceived less as conventional narrative cinema than as a moving meditation on womanhood, beauty, art history, music, and the female figure across time. The photograph therefore loops his career back on itself. The young man who learned scale and gesture from Bollywood hoardings became an internationally famous painter, then returned to cinema with the authority to collapse gallery painting and movie mythology into the same creative world. Husain points with the brush, Dixit looks, and behind them an image is already transforming a living actor into another kind of icon.M. F. Husain composition on pale paper showing a long-bodied brown female figure seated diagonally beside a tall stringed instrument. Her simplified face, red bindi, lotus, raised white hand, and the small elephant below create a sacred, musical vocabulary. The combination strongly recalls Saraswati, Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, learning, and the arts, a figure Husain represented repeatedly, though I could not verify the exact title and catalogue history of this image and therefore would not label it definitively. What we can see is a theme that ran through his career: classical Indian music translated into shape and color. Husain began a sustained series on musicians around 1959 and repeatedly returned to veenas, tanpuras, dancers, ragas, and listening figures. His music paintings also drew on Ragamala traditions, where specific ragas were visualized through color, form, mood, and symbolic imagery over time. He had encountered music and dance while growing up in Indore, then turned those memories into a visual rhythm of long limbs, spare contours, flattened fields, and symbolic objects. The painting also leads into the hardest part of Husain’s legacy. A different, older drawing of Saraswati, made decades earlier, was reproduced in 1996 and became the focus of campaigns accusing the Muslim artist of insulting Hinduism. Husain insisted he had depicted Saraswati with respect and was trying to create her “in the modern language of painting.” The dispute helped transform him from celebrated national painter into a political target. Seen with that history in mind, this quieter musical image asks a larger question that followed Husain for the rest of his life: who is permitted to reinterpret a culture’s sacred stories, and when does artistic belonging become contested? The controversy would later become part of the pressure that drove him from India, making this image of music, devotion, and modern form inseparable from questions of authorship, faith, and belonging.

📽️ Artist of the Day: Cauleen Smith

Cauleen Smith works across film, installation, and community practice to imagine Black futures shaped by care, joy, and collective vision. Her art asks what liberation looks like when we design it together.

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #BlackSky #BlackSkyArt #Art

Portrait of Cauleen Smith in her studio, photographed by Joshua Franzos for the 2022 Heinz Awards. Smith stands at a worktable covered in white paper, one hand resting on it and the other at her hip. She wears dark green trousers, a pale pink sheer blouse with a ruffled placket and blue-framed glasses. Behind her, painted panels fill the room with washed bands of blue, pink, yellow, green, and rust; fragments of handwritten words hover through the color. The portrait places Smith inside the layered environment her practice has become known for. She trained as a filmmaker, earning her BA at San Francisco State and MFA at UCLA, but her work expanded beyond a single screen into banners, textiles, sculpture, sound, projection, procession, and room-sized installation. Experimental cinema still provides the grammar. Structural film, Third World Cinema, science fiction, Black feminist thought, and histories of Black music become tools for asking how images shape us and how communities might imagine themselves otherwise. By the time this photograph was made, the Heinz Foundation was honoring Smith for a practice that keeps changing form. Her 2017 Whitney Biennial presentation included hand-sewn banners carried through New York in a musical procession; Give It or Leave It later joined film, light, disco balls, objects, and architecture into environments about Alice Coltrane, Noah Purifoy, Rebecca Cox Jackson, and radical generosity. Smith has described her work as an offering to Black diasporic invention, survival, and generativity. That idea helps explain the studio behind her. Painting leaks into text; cinema leaves the screen; research becomes atmosphere. In 2026, the same method has reached the Venice Biennale through The Wanda Coleman Songbook, a multisensory portrait of Los Angeles. The forms keep moving, but the question remains: what worlds become possible when Black imagination is treated not as escape, but as a way of building reality?Production still from Cauleen Smith’s 2018 film Sojourner. Under the desert sun at Noah Purifoy’s Outdoor Desert Art Museum in Joshua Tree, an ensemble of women pose across a concrete platform beneath exposed roof beams. Their clothes turn the group into visual rhythm: lime yellow, green plaid, red satin, black-and-white geometric print, purple, denim, florals, headwraps, jewelry, visors, and bright socks. At center, a woman in a fitted black-and-white jumpsuit steps forward while others sit, stand, lean into one another, or gaze upward. Smith built this scene as a reimagining of a 1966 photograph by Life photographer Bill Ray showing nine Black men near Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers. She changes the gendered center of gravity and relocates the gathering to Purifoy’s desert environment, where discarded material had already become art and social thought. Purifoy helped found the Watts Towers Art Center, made assemblages from debris after the 1965 Watts Rebellion, and later turned ten acres of Joshua Tree desert into an museum. Sojourner brings that history into conversation with other Black experiments in community: Alice Coltrane’s Vedantic ashram, Rebecca Cox Jackson, Sojourner Truth, and the Combahee River Collective. Their words and ideas move through the film like messages across time. Smithsonian curator Saisha Grayson describes the young women as liberation messengers, carrying radios and listening for what earlier generations transmit. Smith is less interested in utopia as fantasy than in people who practiced pieces of it through collective life, spiritual discipline, art, feminism, and mutual responsibility. The cast’s futuristic styling does not ask us to abandon history. It asks what happens when history becomes usable material for another future. In this frame, community itself is the image: many bodies, many styles, one temporary constellation. Smith replaces the heroic lone visionary with something more demanding and more hopeful, a world built together.Portrait of Cauleen Smith photographed by G L Askew II for the Los Angeles Times in 2023. Smith stands against a beige wall with her hands clasped, wearing a black button-front blouse scattered with tiny white specks, a chunky silver chain, and a pleated black skirt whose lower edge erupts into a multicolored printed image. Her locs frame her face and she looks slightly upward with a small smile. The photograph accompanied an unusual project: Smith interviewed Los Angeles artist George Evans, brother of poet Wanda Coleman, while following the cultural routes that shaped them both. Smith had returned to Los Angeles after years away and was using Coleman’s writing as a guide through what Coleman called the city’s “Deep West,” where glamour, racism, Black invention, labor, migration, and myth coexist. Evans opened doors into that history. He spoke about his family’s advertising business, Black-owned Golden State Mutual Life Insurance and its art collection, Beat poets in Echo Park, the Watts Rebellion, and meeting Noah Purifoy while Purifoy gathered fire-scarred debris from the streets. For Smith, the conversation deepened a lineage she already felt as a Northern California-born Black artist shaped by West Coast experimental culture. She was researching Coleman because she heard music inside her poetry. That research grew into The Wanda Coleman Songbook, first presented in New York in 2024 and now part of the 2026 Venice Biennale. There, four channels surround visitors with lowriders, flower stalls, liquor stores, the Hollywood Hills, Baldwin Hills oil wells, and Coleman’s books, while seven Black composers respond to lines. The installation turns Los Angeles into sound, image, scent, memory, and argument. Seen from that later chapter, this portrait records Smith not only as an artist but as a listener. Her practice often begins by finding a person, place, archive, or artwork whose signal is still alive, then building a form generous enough for others to hear it too.Installation view of Cauleen Smith’s Epistrophy, 2018, inside the darkened exhibition Give It or Leave It. A taxidermied black raven bends over a rock at left; potted snake plants rise under magenta light; shells, stones, vessels, a radio, books, trays, and found things sit among four video monitors. One screen shows a sunlit landscape, while large projections spill fragments of sky, terrain, and figures onto the walls. Closed-circuit cameras aim at the tabletop, combining these intimate objects with moving backgrounds so that a small sculpture can suddenly inhabit a desert, a cosmic horizon, or some invented elsewhere. Smith calls the objects an archive of associations, travels, affections, desires, questions, and longings. The title comes from Thelonious Monk’s composition “Epistrophy,” and improvisation is central to the work. Smith also connects the piece to the Art Ensemble of Chicago and its use of “little instruments,” bells, toys, gongs, bird calls, whistles, and other sound-makers that widened what Black experimental music could contain. Epistrophy asks what an equivalent might look like in expanded cinema. Instead of treating filmmaking as camera plus screen, Smith lets plants, minerals, figurines, surveillance technology, NASA imagery, National Geographic landscapes, memory, and chance become instruments. Cameras watch the objects, but the objects escape ordinary meanings as projections enlarge and relocate them. First shown at ICA Philadelphia in 2018, Epistrophy became part of Smith’s traveling Give It or Leave It exhibition and entered LACMA’s collection. The work reveals why Smith’s installations are not simply films displayed in galleries. She builds conditions for perception. A raven, plant, cheap figurine, or glass vessel may be mundane alone; beside an unfamiliar object and projected into another world, it becomes a portal. The audience completes the circuit by making associations of its own.

🎤 Artist of the Day: Little Simz

A storyteller and lyricist whose words cut through noise, Little Simz turns truth into rhythm. Her music blends vulnerability with confidence, charting a path of self-definition through sound and poetry.

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #MusicSky #BlackSky #Art

Black-and-white close portrait of Little Simz from British Vogue’s December 2023 “Tradition & Revolution” issue, photographed by Tim Walker. Simz wears a pale tailored jacket, small hoop earrings, a chain necklace, dramatic eye makeup, and natural locs sculpted upward into branching, hornlike forms that cast shadows across the plain background. She looks slightly upward past the camera, serious and alert. The hair is not incidental. In the accompanying interview, Simz said she had once hated her natural hair after years of straightening, quiffs, and bad dye jobs, but had reached a point where wearing it made her feel “beautiful and divine feminine.” Vogue described the sculptural tresses as a sign of growing confidence. That shift mirrors the larger arc of her career. Born Simbiatu Ajikawo and raised in Islington by Nigerian parents, she built herself outside the machinery that was supposed to validate her: youth-club performances at St Mary’s, music uploaded to SoundCloud and Bandcamp, and releases through her own Age 101 imprint. By 2023 she had already won the Mercury Prize for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, a Brit Award, and an Ivor Novello, while acting in Top Boy and expanding into photography and fashion. Yet the portrait resists triumphalism. The expression is watchful; the styling is both armor and self-recognition. Two years later, Lotus would emerge from betrayal, burnout, and a near-decision to quit music, with Simz choosing renewal rather than retreat. By 2025 she was curating Meltdown and being honored as a Cultural Innovator by the British Fashion Council. Seen now, the hair becomes a visual thesis: growth does not require becoming someone else. Simz’s power has increasingly come from occupying every part of herself at once: rapper, actor, photographer, Nigerian-British daughter, introvert, fashion figure, and artist unwilling to surrender control of her own story. It is self-possession rendered not as spectacle, but as a decision to remain whole.Color portrait of Little Simz seated on a wooden chair against a pale studio wall for British Vogue’s December 2023 issue, photographed by Tim Walker and styled by Kate Phelan. She rests her chin on one fist and looks directly at the camera, wearing a fitted brown-and-black Maison Margiela playsuit, bright yellow socks, chunky dark platform shoes, and a green track jacket striped with blue, black, and yellow that slips from one shoulder. Her locs are piled into a high knot, with several falling down the front of her body. The pose is quiet, conversational, but the styling mixes sportswear, tailoring, pattern, and androgyny in the same way Simz’s music refuses one lane. She grew up in north London hearing Nas, Ms Dynamite, garage, grime, neo-soul, funk, Afrobeat, and reggae, then learned early how to make work without much money or industry permission. As a teenager she paid £1 to use St Mary’s Youth Club, where she met collaborators including dancer Kloe Dean and producer Inflo. By 21 she had already released mixtapes, EPs, and a debut album through her own Age 101 label. Independence became aesthetic as well as business practice. In the Vogue interview, Simz described carving a sound rooted in hip-hop but willing to move into alternative spaces, while her stylist Luci Ellis linked her fashion evolution to letting go of boundaries. The clothes in this image make that philosophy visible: feminine and masculine codes, luxury and streetwear, softness and structure coexist without asking to be reconciled. That same refusal would later animate Lotus, where bossa nova, punk, Afrobeat, garage, soul, jazz, and rap all sit inside one emotional world. Simz has said the common denominator is simply being herself. This portrait catches that idea before it became the thesis of another album. She is seated, still, and unshowy, but the image contains a career-long insistence: creative freedom is not about choosing among identities. It is about refusing the demand to choose at all.British Vogue’s December 2023 cover starring Little Simz, photographed by Tim Walker for the magazine’s “Great Britain: Tradition & Revolution” issue. Simz faces the camera in an all-white ensemble: tailored layers by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, a Polo Ralph Lauren hoodie, an Emma Willis shirt, a hat by Nerida Fraiman, and white boxing gloves raised beneath her chin. The red VOGUE masthead stretches across the top; black cover text reads “Great BRITAIN — TRADITION & REVOLUTION.” Simz smiles slightly from inside the fighter’s stance. The metaphor is unusually literal for an artist whose career was built through persistence. Raised on a north London council estate, she rejected early record deals and released music independently through Age 101, even when critical acclaim outpaced resources. In 2022 she won the Mercury Prize for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert and the Brit Award for Best New Artist, bringing her mother onstage for the latter. A year later British Vogue placed her among six cover stars representing contemporary Britain, alongside Stormzy, Tilda Swinton, Jodie Comer, Olivia Colman, and Kate and Lila Moss. In the accompanying interview, Simz reflected on setbacks, rejection, financial strain, and remaining independent, then ended with the same logic the boxing gloves make visible: what she wants will not come easily, but she is prepared to fight for it. The cover also belongs to Edward Enninful’s final December issue as editor-in-chief, revisiting the “Great Britain” theme of his first issue six years earlier. Simz appears not simply as a rapper invited into fashion, but as part of a changing national portrait: Nigerian-British, self-directed, multidisciplinary, and difficult to categorize. In 2025 the British Fashion Council named her Cultural Innovator, recognizing how far that influence had spread beyond records. The gloves are costume, wit, and biography at once. Simz is dressed in white, but nothing about the image suggests surrender.Cover art for Little Simz’s 2021 album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, often shortened to SIMBI, a title that echoes her first name, Simbiatu. Against a mustard-yellow background, Simz crouches low in an orange-and-dark-blue checkerboard suit, glasses on her nose, looking sideways toward the camera. Her locs form a looping structure that rises above her head like sculpture. Along the left edge, a black Japanese-style obi strip carries the album title and artist name in yellow and white lettering. The campaign was directed and designed by Jeremy Ngatho Cole, with photography by Nwaka Okparaeke, styling by Luci Ellis, hair by Chantelle Fuller, and makeup by Nibras. After the tightly focused GREY Area, Simz used lockdown solitude to turn inward and make a record about introversion, family, womanhood, race, fame, ambition, and the cost of success. She told Apple Music that solitude could be a place of contentment; elsewhere she described finding power in introversion rather than treating quietness as weakness. The album sounds anything but small: orchestral fanfares, soul, funk, jazz, Afrobeat, rap, and cinematic interludes expand around her voice, while actor Emma Corrin appears as the narrator. Simz and childhood collaborator Inflo built a work grand enough to hold private thought at public scale. The album won the 2022 Mercury Prize, confirming what its cover already suggests: introspection can be regal, theatrical, and commanding. The image also marks a chapter in Simz’s visual authorship. She remained independent through Age 101, worked with a close creative team, and made a campaign whose styling became inseparable from the record’s identity. Four years later, Lotus deliberately became her first album not to put her face on the cover, replacing portraiture with a flower associated with renewal. That contrast makes SIMBI even more revealing: here Simz places herself at the center of the frame while learning that looking inward can be a source of outward power.

🎨 Artist of the Day: Skunder Boghossian

Skunder Boghossian bridged traditional Ethiopian art with modern expression. His work blended ancient symbols, spirituality, and surrealism to tell stories of identity and liberation that transcended time.

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #BlackSky #Art

Black-and-white archival photograph of Alexander “Skunder” Boghossian leaning over a worktable, brush or drawing tool in his right hand, looking directly toward the camera. Paintings crowd the studio around him: elongated women with large almond-shaped eyes, stylized faces, potted plants, and framed works stacked against walls and furniture. A large seated female figure rises behind his right shoulder; at lower right is The Union, dated 1964. The photographer is unknown, and the image survives in the National Archives’ Hampton Foundation Collection. It catches Boghossian during the period when his art was changing most dramatically. Born in Addis Ababa in 1937 to an Ethiopian mother and Armenian father, he left Ethiopia on a government scholarship in 1955, studied in London, then moved to Paris in 1957. There he spent as much time in museums, cafés, jazz clubs, and artists’ studios as in formal classrooms. Daily study at the Musée de l’Homme exposed him to African sculpture and masks; conversations with Aimé Césaire, Léopold Sédar Senghor, Cheikh Anta Diop, and artists across the African diaspora pulled him toward Négritude and Pan-African thought. Surrealism offered another language for dreams, metamorphosis, and the unseen. Boghossian did not choose between those worlds. He began building a visual language in which Ethiopian church painting, healing scrolls, West African forms, modernism, jazz, literature, memory, and spirit could coexist. The portraits surrounding him still belong partly to his earlier figurative period, but their stretched bodies and mask-like faces already point toward the cosmic beings of his 1964 works. The photograph therefore captures more than an artist at a table. It shows a young African modernist learning how to make inherited traditions and global encounters speak to one another without allowing either to become a cage. That refusal of a single lineage would define the rest of his career. The studio already maps an emerging language.Skunder Boghossian’s Night Flight of Dread and Delight, 1964, is a dark cosmology of two winged creatures rising through a field of stars, circles, blue, gray, rust, and orange forms. One creature has a wide-eyed catlike face; another suggests an owl. Their bodies seem assembled from armor, masks, talismans, bones, feathers, planets, and constellations. A horizontal boundary separates earth from the heavens, but the beings cross it. Boghossian made the painting after years in Paris, immersed in Surrealism, Pan-African intellectual circles, African art, and the work of artists including Wifredo Lam and Roberto Matta. In 1964 he flew to the United States to marry Marilyn Pryce, a civil rights activist from Tuskegee, Alabama. The transatlantic flight was violently turbulent, and Boghossian transformed that fear into a meditation on crossing worlds. He completed Night Flight in Alabama only months after the Civil Rights Act was signed. The painting carries the anxiety of flight, the Black Atlantic, African spiritual systems, Ethiopian healing scrolls, and the supernatural storytelling of Nigerian writer Amos Tutuola. Boghossian called his emerging philosophy “Afro-metaphysics,” using myth and spirit not as nostalgia but as tools for imagining Black existence beyond colonial categories. The owl and catlike beings also echo the dream-monsters of Goya’s The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters, but Boghossian redirects Surrealism through African cosmologies and diasporic memory. The work is neither purely European Surrealism nor an illustration of one African tradition. Its power comes from the collision. Fear becomes flight; history becomes cosmos; inherited symbols become new worlds. Decades later, the Metropolitan Museum of Art included Night Flight in Surrealism Beyond Borders, recognizing what the painting had already insisted in 1964: modernism’s unconscious was never confined to Europe. The crossing becomes personal and diasporic, historical and metaphysical at once.Black-and-white archival photo of Skunder Boghossian standing and smiling in a crowded studio beside paintings, drawings, portfolios, brushes, and sculptures. He wears a dark buttoned shirt and light trousers. At far left is the painting Subterranean Confidence; behind the large black portfolio rises Stele, a carved wooden sculpture from 1964. Sketches are pinned to the wall and works lean across the floor, making the studio a laboratory for image, object, symbol, and material. The photographer is unknown; the image comes from the National Archives’ Hampton Foundation Collection. It comes from the mid-1960s, when Boghossian’s practice moved decisively beyond the figurative portraits of his earlier Paris years. He studied African objects repeatedly at Paris’s Musée de l’Homme, as works carrying specific cultural and spiritual knowledge. He absorbed Négritude and Pan-African ideas through figures such as Aimé Césaire and Cheikh Anta Diop. And he exchanged ideas with African and diasporic artists, including Ivorian sculptor Christian Lattier, whose fiber-wrapped figures demonstrated that the supernatural could inhabit modern form. The objects around him make that experimentation visible. Painting alone was not enough; sculpture, collage, drawing, pattern, literature, and spiritual research could all feed the same language. After returning to Ethiopia in 1966, he traveled to historic sites, studied rock-hewn churches, crosses, icons, and healing scrolls, and taught at the School of Fine Arts in Addis Ababa. In the United States, he carried that method into Howard University, teaching for nearly three decades and mentoring generations of artists, including members of the Ethiopian diaspora. This photograph catches the principle before the long teaching legacy: culture is not a museum specimen. For Boghossian it was material to study deeply, transform responsibly, and keep alive through invention. At Howard, that method became a living diasporic lineage.Skunder Boghossian’s Ju-Ju’s Wedding, 1964, is a dense field of rust red, orange, gray, black, cream, and metallic tones. Two mask-like figures dominate the lower half, with circular red-ringed eyes and faces built from stripes, zigzags, dots, triangles, and layered fragments. Around them crowd hornlike curves, disks, bands, geometric emblems, and partly hidden forms, making the surface feel ceremonial and in motion. Boghossian made the work with tempera and metallic paint on cut-and-torn cardboard, turning cardboard into something resembling a talisman, icon, collage, and cosmic map. In 1964 he held a successful solo exhibition at Galerie Lambert in Paris, traveled to the United States, and married Marilyn Pryce in Tuskegee, Alabama. A cluster of works from that year, including Night Flight of Dread and Delight, Ju-Ju’s Wedding, Ju-Ju’s Wedding Feast, and Ju-Ju Celebrates, developed what he called “Afro-metaphysics.” “Juju” became his shorthand for a spiritual language that could connect Ethiopian Orthodox imagery, healing scrolls, West African religious forms, Surrealism, Pan-African thought, and his own diasporic experience without pretending those traditions were identical. The title is both intimate and metaphysical: personal union becomes a gathering of ancestral forces. The cut cardboard and repeated marks recall the structure of Ethiopian protective scrolls, objects designed to place image, writing, and spiritual power in relation. Yet Boghossian was not reproducing a traditional scroll. He was inventing a modern visual system from many inheritances. MoMA acquired Ju-Ju’s Wedding soon after it was made, making Boghossian the first contemporary African artist represented in its collection. The milestone matters, but the work makes the stronger statement. At a moment when African modernism was often treated as peripheral to Western art history, Boghossian placed Africa, diaspora, spirit, and experiment at the center of modernity itself. That claim still lands.

✨ Artist of the Day: Mickalene Thomas

Through rhinestones, color, and collage, Mickalene Thomas reimagines beauty & power. Portraits celebrate Black femininity and self-definition, reclaiming the gaze with confidence and glamour.

mickalene.herokuapp.com

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #BlackSky #Art

Portrait of Mickalene Thomas seated against a dense botanical backdrop, wearing a black blazer and black top, dark trousers, and oversized translucent glasses. Her locs fall over her shoulders; one arm rests loosely on the back of a wooden chair while she faces camera with a steady gaze. Ferns, trailing leaves, and dark star-veined foliage fill nearly every inch behind her, turning the portrait into a meeting between the artist and the lush interiors that recur throughout her work. Born in Camden, New Jersey, in 1971, Thomas came to art later. In Portland in the 1990s, seeing Carrie Mae Weems's work gave her something she had not often encountered in museums: a Black woman using her own life, body, and community as serious artistic materials. Thomas went on to Pratt and Yale, where photographing herself and her mother, Sandra Bush, changed the direction of her practice. Her portraits would become a counter-history to the Western canon, placing Black women, especially queer Black women, friends, lovers, family, and muses, at the center of images associated with beauty, leisure, sexuality, and power. Domestic space matters just as much as the sitter. Thomas builds rooms with patterned upholstery, houseplants, wood paneling, mirrors, wallpaper, and objects that echo the New Jersey interiors of her childhood, then photographs those spaces and reworks them through collage, paint, rhinestones, film, and installation. By 2024, her first major international touring retrospective, All About Love, was carrying more than two decades of that practice from Los Angeles to Philadelphia, London, Toulouse, and finally Paris's Grand Palais, where it closed in 2026. This portrait therefore reads almost like a quiet key to the whole project. Thomas sits inside abundance without being swallowed by it. The plants frame her, but her gaze controls the image. In a career devoted to who gets to look, who gets looked at, and who gets to define beauty, she occupies the center on her own terms.Mickalene Thomas's Afro Goddess Looking Forward, 2015, is a self-portrait of the artist reclining on a couch amid dense domestic patterns. Thomas wears a green floral robe; one bent knee rises toward the foreground while cushions in black-and-white animal print, orange flowers, and clashing textiles surround her. Her face is built from flat brown paint, rhinestones, and a rectangular black-and-white photograph of her own eyes pasted across the painted face. A large sparkling Afro forms a dark halo around her head. Behind her, panels of purple, green, cream, tan, and floral imagery overlap like wallpaper, fabric swatches, photographs layered into one room. The glamorous pose carries art history with it. Thomas has repeatedly returned to the odalisque, the reclining female body used by painters such as Ingres, Manet, and Matisse for beauty, fantasy, exoticism, and male desire. Here the artist becomes both maker and muse. A Black queer woman does not enter the composition as servant, anonymous model, or object offered to someone else's gaze. She looks back. The photographed eyes make that confrontation literal, inserting a living stare into the constructed body. Thomas's method often begins with a staged photograph in a set she builds herself, then moves through collage before becoming a mixed-media painting. Rhinestones became part of her vocabulary for glamour, masking, adornment, labor, and visibility. The work carries a personal lineage. Thomas began photographing herself and her mother, Sandra Bush, at Yale, learning that portraiture could become an exchange between sitter and artist rather than an act of possession. Decades later, her All About Love retrospective placed this self-portrait inside an argument about Black women claiming not just representation, but pleasure, rest, desire, self-fashioning, and love. The goddess in the title is not distant mythology. She is the artist, seated in her own visual world and determining the terms on which we may enter it.Mickalene Thomas poses in her Brooklyn studio in 2019, photographed by Dana Scruggs for Town & Country. She sits wide-legged on a rolling chair in a loose white shirt, emerald-green trousers, glasses, and white sneakers, one arm raised across her forehead. Behind her lean two mixed-media works of Black women drawn from vintage magazines. Faces combine painting and black-and-white photography; skin is interrupted by pixel-like color blocks, while rhinestones, glitter, and collage crowd the canvases. The portrait catches an old archive becoming new material. On a studio table were stacks of Jet magazines and calendars she had found in New Orleans. Their pages included Black female pinups circulated through a commercial gaze and censorship. Thomas scanned, enlarged, cut apart, and recontextualized those images. She was asking who controlled how these women were seen, what changes when their bodies move from magazine page to monumental painting, and whether an image made for consumption can be reclaimed as a site of agency. The investigation expanded through June 1976 and her Jet-inspired Beyond the Pleasure Principle paintings, where pixelated blocks hide, reveal, or fragment bodies while women's eyes remain present. The photograph also captures another shift. Thomas was preparing Better Nights for Miami's Bass Museum, an immersive project descended from Better Days, her 2013 Art Basel installation inspired by parties her mother Sandra Bush hosted in 1970s New Jersey. Thomas wanted museums to feel less like elite rooms and more like spaces for music, leisure, and community. That impulse still runs through her practice. Her All About Love retrospective transformed galleries with domestic interiors, sounds, seating, plants, and monumental portraits, asking viewers to inhabit the world around the pictures rather than stand at a distance. The relaxed pose here is deceptive: behind it sits a serious project about access, archive, pleasure, and who gets to command the image.Mickalene Thomas's Portrait of Mnonja, 2010, shows a Black woman reclining across a riotously patterned couch in complete command. Mnonja wears a white blouse edged in red, deep blue velvet trousers, pink-red glittering heels, large earrings and gold jewelry. One arm stretches along the sofa while her legs extend left. She looks outward, composed and self-possessed. The interior is lush: floral cushions, black-and-white fabric, orange and cream patterns, striped walls, wood paneling, and rhinestones compete for attention. Thomas covered clothing, makeup, hair, jewelry, and shoes with sparkling stones, a material associated more with craft stores than museum painting. That collision is part of the point. Thomas makes decoration, femininity, fashion, and domestic taste monumental. The reclining pose reaches back through centuries of Western painting, especially the odalisque tradition and works such as Manet's Olympia, where women were arranged for a presumed male viewer and Black women often appeared as servants. Here the Black woman is the center, source of glamour, and person controlling the encounter. Thomas has said that beauty has always been a subject of debate around Black women, whether Black women were allowed to lead that conversation. Her answer is not one ideal of beauty. It is agency. Mnonja was one of the women Thomas photographed in sets built from retro textiles, furniture, plants, and objects designed to create trust between artist and muse. Photography becomes collage; collage becomes painting; a private pose becomes public art history. The Smithsonian American Art Museum acquired Portrait of Mnonja in 2011, placing this rhinestone-covered vision of Black female leisure inside the national collection. She reclines, but never becomes passive. Thomas's later All About Love retrospective made the larger argument explicit: rest, pleasure, style, desire, and self-possession are not decorative side notes to Black life. They are worthy subjects of history.

🖼️ Artist of the Day: Wifredo Lam

Wifredo Lam’s paintings fused Afro-Cuban culture, surrealism, and spirituality into dreamlike visions. His art reflected a world where myth and modernity coexist, celebrating the complexity of identity and ancestry.

Black-and-white photograph of Wifredo Lam standing in his high-ceilinged studio in Albissola Marina, Italy, in 1964. He poses near the center with one arm raised against a doorway or canvas and the other hand at his hip, surrounded by paintings leaning on walls and floor, open frames, ladders, brushes, jars, and a radio. Behind him is Les enfants sans âme (The Soulless Children), a large 1964 canvas of angular white and dark forms. The room feels both orderly and alive, a workshop built for scale. By this point Lam was no longer the young Cuban painter absorbing European modernism. He had lived through Spain’s civil war, exile from Nazi-occupied France, a transformative return to Cuba, and decades of movement among Havana, Paris, New York, and the Mediterranean. Albissola became another kind of home. Invited to the Ligurian coast through artist Asger Jorn’s circle in the 1950s, Lam eventually bought a house there and added a tall studio with a huge window overlooking the bay. His son Eskil remembered music blasting from large speakers while his father worked. The change of place also opened new materials: Lam deepened his printmaking and ceramics, moving his hybrid figures from dense tropical settings toward sparer grounds and sharper lines. That evolution is visible around him here. The strange beings that once crowded The Jungle have not vanished; they have been distilled. Lam resisted being reduced to Cubism, Surrealism, “Latin American art,” or an exotic image of Blackness. His life had crossed Chinese, African, Spanish, Cuban, French, and Italian worlds, and his work refused to choose only one. In 2025–26, MoMA’s first comprehensive U.S. retrospective of Lam finally traced that full transnational arc across six decades. This studio portrait catches him midway through it: surrounded by the evidence of a practice still changing, with no single country, movement, or medium large enough to contain him. The studio itself reads as a map of an artist always in motion.Wifredo Lam’s Your Own Life, 1942, is a gouache on paper built around a fractured, frontal head that seems to contain several beings at once. Against a blue field, the face is layered: one eye stares from a pale oval, another peers from a striped form, a long narrow nose divides the composition, and an animal-like figure occupies the center. Leaf shapes crown the head, while the faint profile of Lam’s German wife, Helena Holzer, appears like a ghost at the right edge. The portrait feels less like one person than a meeting place between human, animal, plant, memory, and spirit. Lam made it the year after returning to Cuba following eighteen years in Europe. He had lived through the Spanish Civil War, entered Picasso’s and the Surrealists’ circles in Paris, and fled France after the Nazi occupation. Home did not offer a simple return. Lam came back seeing Cuba through exile, racism, colonialism, and European modernism, searching for a language capable of holding those histories at once. Your Own Life belongs to that breakthrough. Cubist fragmentation and Surrealist metamorphosis are present, but Lam was no longer content to borrow Europe’s fascination with masks or the “primitive.” He drew instead on Afro-Cuban culture, African art, Caribbean vegetation, his Chinese and African ancestry, and conversations with Lydia Cabrera and Alejo Carpentier. The hybrid body became a way to refuse fixed identities. Lam himself moved through categories others wanted to impose on him: Cuban and European, Chinese and African, modernist and outsider. Here, fragmentation does not mean brokenness. It becomes abundance. The multiple eyes suggest several ways of seeing at once, while Holzer’s spectral profile folds private life into a cultural transformation. Now, Your Own Life reads like an early declaration of the visual world that would soon culminate in The Jungle. Lam was learning how to make a painting carry migration, ancestry, desire, and history without forcing them into one face.Black-and-white photograph of Wifredo Lam crouching in his Havana studio in 1943, surrounded by the paintings that marked his return to Cuba. Behind him rises La jungla (The Jungle), its elongated plant-human-animal figures packed into a dense field; nearby is Le matin vert (The Green Morning), and La silla (The Chair) lies on the floor. Lam wears a light shirt and striped trousers, one arm resting across a bent knee. A cup sits near his shoes, a table of studio materials stands at left, and the monumental canvases make his body look small inside the world he was inventing. The photograph preserves a turning point. Lam had returned to Cuba in 1941 after eighteen years abroad, fleeing Europe as war closed around him. He came home transformed by Madrid, the Spanish Civil War, Picasso, Surrealism, and exile, but disturbed by racism, poverty, colonial hierarchies, and Afro-Cuban culture packaged for tourists. With Lydia Cabrera and Alejo Carpentier, he traveled, listened, and deepened his engagement with Afro-Cuban history and religious traditions. Lam insisted that he would not make picturesque Cuba for foreign consumption. He wanted painting capable of carrying the force of Black Cuban life. In this room that ambition became material. Sugarcane, broad leaves, mask-like faces, horse forms, breasts, horns, hands, and impossible bodies entered his canvases, not as ethnographic illustration but as what he called a poetic excitation. He later described his painting as an act of decolonization and imagined it as a Trojan horse disturbing the dreams of exploiters. The studio photograph lets us see that project before museums turned The Jungle into an icon. These works are still leaning against walls, sharing floor space with cups, brushes, and unfinished labor. Eight decades later, MoMA’s 2025–26 retrospective placed this moment at the center of Lam’s transnational story. Here history has not hardened yet. We are inside the workshop while a new visual language is being made.Wifredo Lam’s La jungla (The Jungle), 1942–43, fills the frame with four towering hybrid beings entangled in sugarcane and tropical foliage. Their bodies are hard to separate from the plants around them: elongated legs end in huge hand-like feet; mask-shaped faces carry multiple eyes; breasts resemble fruit; horns, tails, leaves, and human limbs overlap. Blues, greens, pale whites, orange, and black move across the surface in translucent layers, giving the crowded scene the feeling of a dream made dense. Lam made the monumental work after returning to Cuba in 1941 following eighteen years in Europe. He glued together two large sheets of kraft paper, sketched the composition in charcoal, then built it with thin oil paint. The humble support matters. This was not a polished fantasy of the tropics. Sugarcane carries the history of Cuba’s plantations, slavery, and indentured labor, while the hybrid figures evoke the endurance of Afro-Caribbean cultures. Lam knew European modernism intimately: he had befriended Picasso, worked among the Surrealists, and absorbed Cubism’s fractured bodies. But The Jungle was not European style simply applied to Caribbean subject matter. Back in Cuba, Lam turned those tools against colonial ways of seeing. He rejected tourist spectacle that reduced Black Cuban culture to entertainment and sought figures powerful enough to unsettle the viewer. The painting’s spiritual charge draws from Afro-Cuban religious worlds without functioning as a literal diagram of Santería. Lam said he worked from “poetic excitation,” allowing symbols to stay multiple and alive. MoMA acquired The Jungle in 1945, two years after its completion. Eighty years later, it anchored MoMA’s 2025–26 retrospective, the first comprehensive U.S. survey of his six-decade career. The painting still refuses an easy category: modernist and Caribbean, beautiful and menacing, historical and dreamlike. Its achievement is not synthesis made smooth. It is a history kept visibly tangled.

🎧 Artist of the Day: Amaarae

A voice that blurs genres and boundaries, Amaarae crafts soundscapes rooted in West African rhythm and global experimentation. Her art defies category, blending softness with strength, tradition with innovation.

#CreatorsAtWork #Skystorians #BlackSky #MusicSky #Art

Amaarae sits wide-legged on a plain wooden block against a soft blue studio background, photographed by Jingyu Lin in 2024. She wears a sculpted black leather halter top with silver buckles and draped chains, glossy black leather trousers, and pointed boots that stretch the silhouette almost to the floor. Her straight dark hair falls past her shoulders, and she looks slightly upward and away from the camera with a calm, self-possessed expression. The portrait arrived at a hinge point in her career. Fountain Baby had turned a cult favorite into a global proposition, and its songs were still spreading long after release. Amaarae was closing that chapter with roses are red, tears are blue, preparing to open shows for Childish Gambino and Sabrina Carpenter, and beginning to understand that audiences far outside the Afropop or alté worlds were hearing what she had built. That mattered because her career had started with the opposite message: when she returned to Ghana after school, she was told her cross-pollinated sound would not work and that she should make something more conventionally local. Instead, she trusted the instincts formed across Accra, Atlanta, New Jersey, hip-hop, R&B, pop, punk, dance music, and the African alternative scene. By 2024 she could say that refusing the box had become the point. She described Fountain Baby as proof that something strange and slow-burning could travel across communities, while her live shows still relied more on conviction than giant production budgets. The leather in this image feels almost like armor, but the pose is relaxed. That tension fits Amaarae: softness in the voice, steel in the decision-making. A year later, BLACK STAR would push that confidence toward dance music, Ghanaian symbolism, and a bigger claim to pop stardom. This portrait catches the moment just before that turn, when the future was already visible in the posture. She is between chapters here: no longer emerging but still nowhere near finished becomingClose portrait of a young Amaarae smiling with her eyes closed, wearing round metal-framed glasses, a light blue top, a delicate necklace, and a plaid strap crossing one shoulder. Her hair is clipped extremely short and dyed bright turquoise blue, with a small green patch near the front. Against the pale background, the color becomes the first thing you notice after her smile. The image belongs to Amaarae’s early public era, when hair was not just styling but part of the argument she was making about self-definition. Vogue featured her in 2018 in a story about women reclaiming the buzz cut and credited an Amaarae portrait to Fotombo. Amaarae explained that cutting and coloring her hair felt like taking control of who she wanted to be after growing up around expectations about how she should present herself. She knew some more traditional observers in Ghana read her appearance as transgressive, even “demonic,” and took the discomfort as evidence that the choice was doing something useful. At the time she was still building the foundation of her career. Passionfruit Summers, released independently through Golden Child, had introduced her atmospheric R&B and electronic sensibility; the 2018 “Fluid” video, shot in Accra and directed by Fotombo, extended that work into a vivid visual world of colored water, flowers, and gender-fluid beauty. Her hair kept changing too: blue, pink, rainbow, polka dots, split colors. The point was never one signature look. Change itself became the signature. That early insistence on visual freedom matters when looking at Amaarae now. The artist who once used a dyed buzz cut to push against local expectations would later build entire album worlds out of latex, Ghanaian national imagery, cyberpunk styling, and club culture. The smile in this photo makes the history feel light, but the choice underneath it was serious: before Amaarae asked pop music to make room for her sound, she practiced making room for herself. Freedom became the languageAlbum cover for Amaarae’s 2025 record BLACK STAR. The image is divided into three broad horizontal fields of red, gold-yellow, and green, echoing the Ghanaian flag. Amaarae sits at the center in a glossy black latex bodysuit and pointed heels, leaning back on one arm with one knee raised and the other leg extended toward the viewer. Her body occupies the yellow middle band where the flag’s black five-pointed star would normally appear. The substitution is deliberate. Amaarae has explained that the title is a triple entendre and that she did not simply want to wave Ghana’s flag from a distance; she wanted to become the symbol. Ghana’s Black Star has long stood for African freedom and unity, and Amaarae turns that national icon into a self-portrait of diasporic pop ambition. The music makes the same move. BLACK STAR pulls from Ghanaian azonto, kpanlogo, hiplife, and highlife while colliding them with Detroit ghettotech, Chicago house, Jersey club, Euro trance, Brazilian baile funk, South African bacardi, zouk, and the pop memories she carried from childhood. Amaarae has said that fusion is her strength and that her version of Ghanaian influence may not always arrive through the instruments listeners expect. Sometimes the rhythm survives while the sound source changes. That refusal to perform “Africanness” in a predictable way is central to the cover too. She is visibly Ghanaian, visibly Black, visibly fashion-forward, and still impossible to reduce to a national genre box. By this era, she was describing herself plainly as a pop star, while also challenging an industry that too often reserves that category for white women. The latex figure at the center of the flag therefore reads as more than glamour. It is placement. Amaarae is saying that experimental African music does not belong at pop’s margins. It can stand in the middle, occupy the emblem, and define the picture. In the cover, nationalism becomes personal, diasporic, fashionable, and future-facing all at onceAmaarae performs at Coachella 2025 under deep red stage light, both arms lifted outward as if opening the room around her. She wears black leather shorts and a structured black leather jacket-corset covered across the shoulders, collar, and chest with rows of sharp silver spikes. Her hair is pulled back, a microphone rests in one hand, and a huge pale screen glows behind her, making the black outfit read almost like armor. The image comes from Coachella’s second weekend, when Amaarae returned to the Gobi stage on April 20 in a spiked variation of the leather look she had worn during weekend one. The timing gives the clothes extra meaning. One week earlier, during her first Coachella set, she had become the first Ghanaian artist to perform a solo set at the festival, played a run of Ghanaian songs and unreleased BLACK STAR material, then had her long hair cut onstage while declaring, “I’m finally free.” She told reporters that one of her proudest choices was using the set to put Ghana on the map and described coming out in all black as embodying the Black Star on Ghana’s flag. Weekend two sharpened that idea visually. The spikes turn the leather from sleek to confrontational, while the open-armed pose makes the armor feel less defensive than declarative. This was also a turning point in scale. Fountain Baby had taken her from alternative favorite to international touring act, but Coachella made the ambition public: she was not asking to be understood only as Afropop, alté, or an African crossover story. She was announcing a pop-star frame large enough to hold all of it. BLACK STAR would arrive months later with Ghanaian dance histories, global club music, and community at its center. Seen from that later vantage point, this photograph feels like the exact moment the next era became physical: Ghanaian pride, punk aggression, fashion, performance, and pop spectacle fused into one body onstage. The spikes make that message visible before even one note reaches the crowd

🎭 Artist of the Day: Yinka Shonibare

Yinka Shonibare explores identity, race, and colonialism through art that fuses European form with African fabric. His work reclaims narratives by confronting power with color, irony, and wit.

Studio portrait of Yinka Shonibare seated in his motorized wheelchair inside his East London workspace, surrounded by the visual vocabulary of his career. He wears a pale blue blazer, dark trousers, patterned shirt, and vibrant turquoise sneakers, smiling at the camera. At left, shelves overflow with art volumes beneath a taxidermy lynx and a globe; behind him hangs a large red-and-black circular form. At right, garments made from Dutch wax printed cotton are pinned high on a white wall, beside a globe-headed figure lifting a brass instrument. The room feels less like a showroom than a working archive of ideas about empire, costume, travel, class, and identity. Shonibare was born in London in 1962 and raised partly in Lagos. At 18 he contracted transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord that left lasting paralysis; he now uses a wheelchair and directs a collaborative studio. He has spoken openly about valuing the creative intelligence of his assistants rather than treating them as anonymous hands, accepting their contributions when they strengthen the work. That matters here because so much around him is physically elaborate: tailored historical costumes, fibreglass bodies, globes, props, textiles, and installations begin with research, sketches, conversation, and delegation. His signature Dutch wax cloth is itself a history lesson. Inspired by Indonesian batik, industrially manufactured in Europe, sold through colonial trade networks, and embraced across West Africa, it refuses the idea that culture comes from one pure place. Shonibare calls himself a “postcolonial hybrid,” and the studio makes that phrase tangible. Today his practice extends beyond objects into infrastructure: the Yinka Shonibare Foundation and Guest Artists Space support residencies in Lagos and Ijebu, while his 2026 projects continue asking who gets refuge, access, memory, and cultural power. The artist at the center of the room has spent decades turning contradiction into a methodYinka Shonibare’s Woman Shooting Cherry Blossoms, 2019, stands against a white background like a frozen impossible event. A life-size female figure in an elaborate Edwardian-style dress of vivid blue, yellow, red, and patterned Dutch wax cotton braces a long rifle at shoulder height. Instead of smoke or a bullet, the barrel erupts into a sweeping tree of dark branches covered with pale pink and deep rose cherry blossoms. Her head is replaced by a small globe. The work was commissioned by Fukuoka Art Museum for its reopening and for Shonibare’s first solo exhibition in Japan, Flower Power, timed to cherry-blossom season. It was also his first work built specifically around a Japanese theme. The contradictions are deliberate. The woman’s Western dress recalls fashions that entered Meiji-era Japan as the country modernized and negotiated Western power. The so-called African fabric complicates that history further: its patterns descend from Indonesian batik, were industrialized by Dutch and British manufacturers, and became embedded in West African identity. Even the globe refuses a fixed nationality. It bears the names of women activists from the nineteenth through twenty-first centuries who fought for women’s rights around the world. Shonibare also rejected the idea of one pure cherry blossom. The enormous branch combines multiple varieties, a botanical hybrid that mirrors the cultural hybridity running through the sculpture. Violence and beauty occupy the same object: a rifle becomes the source of spring flowers, while a woman dressed in signs of empire redirects the weapon toward imagination. Shonibare has long said he enjoys paradox because several ideas can remain true at once. Here Japan, Europe, Africa, gender, colonial history, feminism, and beauty collide without resolving into a single lesson. The sculpture asks whether inherited symbols must keep the meanings power gave them, or whether artists can load them differently and fire something new into the worldYinka Shonibare’s The Swing (after Fragonard), 2001, transforms an icon of European aristocratic pleasure into a life-size scene viewers can circle. A headless female mannequin hangs from ropes beneath an ivy-covered branch, her body thrown backward in mid-swing. Layers of orange, green, turquoise, and patterned Dutch wax cotton billow around her in an eighteenth-century gown. White-stockinged legs kick upward as one slipper flies loose at upper left. Flowering foliage sprawls beneath the swing, turning the white gallery into a theatrical garden. The pose comes from Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s The Swing, painted around 1767, a Rococo fantasy of flirtation, luxury, and leisure. In the original, a young woman swings between an older man and a lover hidden below, who peers beneath her skirts. Shonibare removes the men and gives the woman a three-dimensional body, leaving us to occupy the viewing position ourselves. Then he changes the material of privilege. Her dress is not French silk but Dutch wax cloth, a textile associated with Africa whose route runs through Indonesian batik, European manufacture, colonial trade, and West African adoption. Shonibare uses that tangled history to expose systems hidden beneath beautiful surfaces. He has said leisure interests him because spare time is bought by wealth often accumulated through exploiting others. The missing head adds another disturbance. It can recall the guillotine and the French Revolution that followed the aristocratic world Fragonard pictured so lovingly. What first looks playful therefore becomes unstable: pleasure beside violence, beauty beside extraction, “African” fabric beside European manufacture, homage beside critique. The Swing became one of Shonibare’s defining works because it established a method he still uses today: enter the Western canon, keep its seduction intact, then rearrange history until the viewer can no longer look at the original innocence the same way. The scene is beautiful, comic and tenseYinka Shonibare’s The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (Africa), 2008, is a staged photograph built like a nightmare from art history. A bald white man in richly patterned Dutch wax clothing sleeps collapsed over a wooden desk, his head on folded arms. Around him, wide-eyed owls stare, bats sweep through a smoky dark sky, a black cat peers beside him, and a lynx sits alert at lower right. The desk carries a French question based on the title: whether the dreams of reason produce monsters in Africa. Shonibare is reenacting Francisco de Goya’s 1799 etching The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters from Los Caprichos, where a sleeper is surrounded by owls, bats, and a watchful lynx. Goya was attacking superstition, corruption, and the failures of supposedly rational society. Shonibare turns that Enlightenment critique back toward empire. This photograph belongs to a five-part series for Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. In each version, the sleeper’s racial identity conflicts with the continent named in the title, unsettling the habit of treating race, culture, and geography as natural equivalents. In the Africa image, the sleeping man is white, and his costume uses Shonibare’s globally hybrid wax cloth. The choice sharpens the historical question: European powers justified colonization through claims of civilization, reason, progress, and universal knowledge, even while partitioning and exploiting African societies. The 1884 to 1885 Berlin Conference sits behind that contradiction, when European states negotiated claims over Africa with no African representation. Shonibare does not simply replace Goya’s monsters with colonialism; he asks whether the violence was already inside the dream of reason itself. That question still runs through his work today, from restitution and looted Benin objects to migration, refuge, war, and institutions built to support artists across Britain and Nigeria. History becomes a dream; the viewer remains awake inside that question

🧵 Artist of the Day: Bisa Butler

Through fabric and color, Bisa Butler redefines portraiture. Her quilts turn texture into story, weaving threads of identity, memory, and resilience into vivid, larger-than-life portraits of the African diaspora.

#CreatorsAtWork #BlackSky #Skystorians #Art

Bisa Butler sits at a worktable in her Jersey City studio, sunlight falling across her face, hands, and a spread of patterned fabric. She holds blue-handled scissors and a narrow textile strip; purple and teal scissors, pins, tools, and cut cloth surround her, while two longarm quilting machines rise behind her. Photographed by Nina Choi for Luxe Interiors + Design in 2024, the image catches Butler in the labor that turns photographs into quilted portraits. She trained as a painter at Howard University, where teachers connected to AfriCOBRA encouraged Black artists to build their own color language outside European traditions. But paint eventually stopped fitting her life. Pregnancy made its smell unbearable, and later, as a young mother, she needed a medium she could practice safely around her children. In graduate school at Montclair State, a fiber-arts class unlocked the answer: fabric could carry drawing, painting, memory, and touch at once. Her mother and grandmother had already taught her to sew. Butler now enlarges source photographs, maps their light and shadow with marker, cuts fabric into shapes, layers them like a painter building glazes, and quilts the top, batting, and backing together. Her materials are never neutral. African wax prints, silk, velvet, lace, family scraps, and fabrics named for proverbs can signal ancestry, emotion, protection, grief, or power. For years she made this work at home, often after teaching high school all day; her Jersey City studio became her first professional workspace. That makes this photo more than a process shot. It shows an artist whose practice grew from domestic knowledge into museum-scale history painting without abandoning the intimacy of sewing. In 2026, Butler is preparing for Tender Monuments at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, her largest survey yet, spanning a 1995 self-portrait to a new 2026 one. The scissors on this table sit inside a thirty-year story still being cut, layered, and stitched into formBisa Butler stands before her quilt Dahomey Amazon, photographed by her husband, John Butler. She wears an off-the-shoulder dress in pink, yellow, blue, and brown African-print fabric, one hand on her hip, long locs over one shoulder. Behind her, the quilted woman meets the viewer head-on: her face is built from purples, cobalt blue, turquoise, and green; gold hoop earrings frame her face; cowrie-shell necklaces and patterned cloth create a commanding presence against a red-and-white geometric field. The photograph became widely used to represent Butler as her work moved from teaching into major museum recognition. Dahomey Amazon, dated 2019 by several museum sources, draws its title from the women warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey in present-day Benin, remembered today as the Agojie. Butler constructs authority through textiles, scale, color, and gaze. That method comes from several lineages at once. Her Ghanaian father connected her to African history; her Louisiana-born mother and grandmother taught her sewing; and at Howard University she studied in an environment shaped by AfriCOBRA, whose artists championed “Kool-Aid colors,” Black pride, and visual languages made for Black communities. Butler carries those lessons into quilting, choosing fabrics because patterns can hold cultural memory and emotional meaning. She has said her portraits form a family album stretching across the Black diaspora, from America to Africa and the Caribbean. Standing beside Dahomey Amazon, Butler almost mirrors her subject: both women face us in patterned cloth, refusing the distance museums have placed between “fine art,” textile traditions, and Black women’s labor. Today, that refusal is part of the American art story. Butler’s quilts sit in major American museum collections, and her 2027 Smithsonian survey, Tender Monuments, will place nearly forty works beside artistic ancestors including Faith Ringgold and Betye Saar, making visible the lineage she has been stitching all alongBisa Butler’s Forever, 2020, is a near life-size quilted portrait of Chadwick Boseman. He stands before black mountains, green palms, and an orange patterned sky, a bright green arch curving over his head like a rainbow or halo. His face is rendered in blue, purple, red, green, and turquoise fabrics; his beard and hair are built from dark and neon-green textures. He wears layers of patterned cloth, including a red-and-black cape over richly colored tailoring, and looks at the viewer with a quiet expression. Butler made Forever after Boseman died in August 2020 at 43. Both artists were Howard University alumni: Butler earned her BFA there in 1995, while Boseman graduated in 2000 before portraying Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall, and T’Challa. Butler said the quilt began “out of love and admiration,” describing Boseman as an activist and advocate for honor, dignity, truth, and integrity. Every material choice carries part of that mourning. She explained that in her Ghanaian culture, red and black are worn at funerals when someone dies young, symbolizing the anguish of an early loss. Neon-green lace forms the coils of his hair; velvet speaks to softness and class; the lush landscape imagines him in paradise. Butler deliberately made the figure almost life-size so that he would feel present among us rather than reduced to an image of someone gone. The work entered the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and appeared in Black American Portraits, an exhibition that placed contemporary Black portraiture in conversation with two centuries of representation. That context matters: Butler’s larger project has always been to return fullness, dignity, and interior life to Black subjects, whether famous or anonymous. Forever does that through grief. It refuses to let Boseman become only a symbol, superhero, or headline. In Butler’s hands, cloth becomes memorial, color becomes emotion, and quilting becomes a way to hold a person close after history has taken him awayBisa Butler stands in her studio beside two towering quilts, photographed by Celeste Sloman for Smithsonian in 2023. Butler wears a black suit covered in gold stars, a cap, pink hair, and white sneakers; she reaches toward the central figure as if presenting him. That work, Young, Gifted and Black, shows a young Black man in a beret and patchwork suit against a blue patterned field. At left is As Long as Heaven and Earth Exist, the Rules of Fashion Will Never End, whose figure wears a leopard-patterned hat and scarf. The titles show how Butler builds beyond likeness. “Young, Gifted and Black” carries a Black cultural lineage through Lorraine Hansberry, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin, framing the sitter through possibility rather than absence. The neighboring title borrows the first line associated with the prayer of Les Sapeurs, the Congolese culture of elegant dressing in which clothing becomes discipline, performance, self-definition, and dignity. Butler often begins with photographs whose subjects were not fully identified by archives. She studies posture, clothing, history, and expression, then chooses fabrics that let her imagine the person’s interior world. She has described her process almost like cultural anthropology: trying to recover the human being behind the picture. Her fabrics may carry names, proverbs, ancestral references, fashion histories, or emotional codes; vivid skin colors shift attention away from literal complexion and toward spirit. The image catches Butler doing what her work asks museums to do: look longer, name people with care, and treat Black style as evidence rather than decoration. Three years later, that method is entering another chapter. In 2026 she completed a new self-portrait, and in 2027 the Smithsonian American Art Museum will open Tender Monuments, the largest survey of her career, framing these quilts not as soft alternatives to monuments, but as monuments themselves: stitched, intimate, and built to keep memory alive

🎤 Artists of the Day: Native Tongues

In the late 1980s, a group of artists including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, and Jungle Brothers changed hip-hop forever. They rapped about unity, self-knowledge, and social awareness over jazz-infused beats.

🗃️ #CreatorsAtWork #BlackSky #Art

Color studio portrait of the Native Tongues posse from a playful New York session by Janette Beckman around 1989–1990. Nine figures crowd together against a bright blue backdrop scattered with doodled musical notes. Some stand, some crouch, and everyone holds a toy instrument: tiny guitars, saxophones, trumpets, and a miniature blue drum kit. Monie Love sits at the drums laughing while the men around her grin, mug for the camera, and lean into one another. The group includes members of the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest, along with manager and connector Chris Lighty, all dressed in the colorful, loose streetwear that helped define the era. The photograph came from the period around the Jungle Brothers’ “Doin’ Our Own Dang,” one of the songs that made the Native Tongues idea audible: separate artists trading verses not because a label assembled them, but because they were friends who liked what one another were making. Monie Love later remembered that Lighty organized the shoot and simply told everyone to pick an instrument that made sense to them. She chose the drums because she had actually played them in school in England. Beckman remembered the day as loose and joyful, with plastic instruments, a birthday cake, beer, and the feeling of friends hanging out rather than posing as a formal supergroup. That mood tells the Native Tongues story better than any logo could. The collective grew from the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, and Tribe finding one another in the late 1980s, then widening to artists including Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Black Sheep, and Chi-Ali. Their bond was less about matching styles than giving one another permission to be different. Afrocentric ideas, jazz, funk, strange samples, humor, feminism, invented slang, and social commentary could all live inside hip-hop at once. Decades later, that model still feels modern: build your own lane, share the road, and let community multiply what individual artists can imagine togetherIllustrated “The Native Tongues” graphic arranged like a colorful family tree. Ten stylized faces appear beneath hand-painted lettering in red, purple, green, yellow, and orange. The top row names Mike Gee, Afrika Baby Bam, DJ Sammy B, Q-Tip, and Phife Dawg; the bottom row names Posdnuos, Dave, Maseo, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi White. Labels sort them into Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, and A Tribe Called Quest, while the bottom reads “EST 1988” and “NEW YORK CITY.” It is not a complete membership chart. Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Black Sheep, Chi-Ali, and affiliates are absent. What it does capture well is the three-group core that grew into Native Tongues. The Jungle Brothers were the first bridge. Q-Tip appeared on their 1988 debut Straight Out the Jungle before Tribe had released an album, and Afrika Baby Bam helped give A Tribe Called Quest its final name. De La Soul connected with the Jungle Brothers through shows and studio sessions; Dave later remembered the early bond as people trading ideas for fun, not chasing a check. “Buddy,” “Doin’ Our Own Dang,” “Mama Gave Birth to the Soul Children,” and other collaborations turned friendship into a shared creative language. Native Tongues was never a conventional band with a fixed roster or one unified discography. It was closer to an ecosystem: artists with distinct sounds, labels, and careers who made room for one another without demanding sameness. That is why the collective mattered. At a moment when rap was often marketed through narrow visual and musical expectations, these artists made eccentricity, introspection, Afrocentric style, jazz records, feminism, humor, softness, and experimentation feel like equally valid forms of hip-hop. Talib Kweli later said they made him feel it was okay to simply be himself. Pharrell said the collective “set so many of us free.” The faces in this graphic are therefore less a roster than the roots of a creative family tree still branching through hip-hop today.A three-by-three collage of nine album covers from the Native Tongues family, turning its history into a wall of visual worlds. Top row: A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory from 1991, De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising from 1989, and Tribe’s Midnight Marauders from 1993. Middle row: De La Soul Is Dead from 1991, Jungle Brothers’ Done by the Forces of Nature from 1989, and Tribe’s People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm from 1990. Bottom row: De La Soul’s Stakes Is High from 1996, Black Sheep’s A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing from 1991, and De La Soul’s Buhloone Mindstate from 1993. The covers move from black-and-red abstraction to yellow psychedelic flowers, collaged faces, crushed flowerpots, illustrated cityscapes, sheep, blurred photography, and surreal painted scenes. The variety is the point. Native Tongues never released an album under the collective name, so its “catalog” lives across the records its members made across separate groups Read chronologically, the covers show an idea evolving. Jungle Brothers and De La Soul opened the door with Afrocentric thought, house music, funk, playful sampling, and the D.A.I.S.Y. Age’s refusal to dress or sound like anyone expected. Tribe carried that freedom into sophisticated jazz-inflected production, especially on The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders. Black Sheep brought wit and sharp satire. De La kept dismantling its own image, declaring “De La Soul Is Dead” when trapped by the hippie label, then later using Stakes Is High to question what hip-hop and its industry were becoming. The collective’s power was never one uniform sound. It was proof that a scene could thrive because its artists were different. Those records made room for later alternative and independent lineages, from Black Star and J Dilla to Roots, Dungeon Family, Pharrell, and artists who built their own worlds instead of waiting for rap’s center to validate them. This collage is not just a best-of shelf. It is a map of permissionsSplit image comparing two hip-hop collectives more than two decades apart. The top half is a 2012 studio portrait of Odd Future photographed by Terry Richardson for XXL: young Los Angeles artists packed against a plain white background in hoodies, caps, camouflage, shorts, and T-shirts. Tyler, the Creator sits near the front in a gray hoodie with a bright pink cast on one hand; Earl Sweatshirt, wearing a blue patterned shirt, smiles near the center while other Odd Future members crowd around them. Below is Janette Beckman’s 1990 Native Tongues portrait on white, where De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Jungle Brothers members clown with toy trumpets, saxophones, guitars, and a miniature drum kit, with Monie Love seated at the drums. The pairing does not suggest the collectives sounded alike. They did not. Native Tongues grew from late-1980s New York Afrocentricity, eclectic sampling, jazz, funk, social reflection, and friendship. Odd Future emerged from 2000s Los Angeles skate culture and the internet with abrasive humor, DIY videos, homemade releases, clothing, design, and a deliberately unruly identity. The deeper resemblance is structural: young creators with different voices forming their own ecosystem, amplifying one another, building an aesthetic around friendship, and refusing to wait for an industry lane to fit them. The connection is more than hindsight. Tyler has said he “wouldn’t exist” without Q-Tip and the Native Tongues pocket, calling their example of being themselves crucial. In a 2025 interview, when De La Soul were asked what Native Tongues might look like today, Odd Future was the first comparison that came to mind, alongside Kendrick Lamar’s circle. The lineage is not imitation. It is permission passed forward: Tribe, De La, Jungle Brothers and their friends showed that a collective could protect individuality instead of flattening it. Years later, Odd Future rebuilt that lesson for a new city, medium, and generation while staying individual.

🎶 Artist of the Day: Solange Knowles

A multidisciplinary artist who transforms emotion into architecture, Solange blurs the boundaries between performance, design + sound. From A Seat at the Table to her museum installations, she shows how to build worlds through #art.

🗃️ #CreatorsAtWork #BlackSky

Solange performs “Cranes in the Sky” on Saturday Night Live on November 5, 2016, standing at a microphone with both arms extended in a slow, sculptural pose. She wears a white crystal-net dress over a white two-piece, long earrings, and an extraordinary circular braided halo that glows around her head like a web, crown, or piece of architecture. A horn player is dimly visible behind her while the stage falls into darkness around the bright geometry of her body. This was Solange’s first SNL appearance, arriving just weeks after A Seat at the Table became her first No. 1 album. The halo was made by Chicago artist Shani Crowe, who spent more than 40 hours braiding and hand-beading it with roughly 5,000 Swarovski crystals. Erickson Beamon created the crystal dress and earrings with Swarovski. The styling was not decoration added after the music. It was part of Solange’s larger language, in which choreography, hair, clothing, bodies, sound, and space become one composition. A Seat at the Table had turned years of writing into a meditation on Black identity, anger, healing, self-possession, and the right to take up space. “Cranes in the Sky,” written years before the album was finished, traces the ways we try to outrun pain and discover that it still follows. Onstage, Solange answered that emotional interiority with controlled movement and radiant design. Looking at the image now also reveals the path ahead. The performer who made a television stage feel like an installation would go on to present performance work at the Guggenheim, Chinati, the Venice Biennale, and the Getty; compose for New York City Ballet; build Saint Heron into an arts institution; and expand her stage-design practice toward large-scale sculpture. In 2026, as she brings her first public large-scale sculpture to New York’s High Line, this 2016 image feels less like a fashion moment than an early blueprint: Solange already treating performance as architecture, and architecture as a way to hold feeling.Portrait of Solange used for the cover of A Seat at the Table, photographed by Carlota Guerrero in 2016. Solange faces the camera against a pale cream background, bare shoulders visible, her hair falling in waves around her face. Pink, gray, black, and silver hair clips remain scattered throughout the hair, the kind of temporary tools normally removed before a finished portrait. Her expression is calm but unwavering. By design, Hairstylist Neal Farinah had placed the clips to hold the waves, and Guerrero later explained that they were not intended for the final photograph. Solange loved the shot, and the team kept them because the unfinished detail exposed vulnerability without weakening the directness of her gaze. Guerrero said Solange wanted to look the listener in the eye, making the album feel like a conversation nobody could simply turn away from. That idea reaches into the record itself. Released September 30, 2016 after years of writing and recording, A Seat at the Table moves through rage, exhaustion, Black womanhood, self-care, family memory, pride, and survival. “Don’t Touch My Hair” turns hair into a boundary around identity; “Cranes in the Sky” searches for relief from pain; family voices appear in the interludes. The album arrived with a 112-page digital book, with Guerrero’s photography and Solange’s lyrics treated as one visual and literary world rather than separate promotion. It became Solange’s first No. 1 album, and “Cranes in the Sky” later earned her first Grammy. Nearly a decade later, the portrait also reads like a thesis for Solange today. Her work through Saint Heron now moves across music, archives, books, curation, design, performance, and sculpture, but the method is recognizable: attend to what others dismiss as incidental, preserve the trace of process, and build a world from it. The clips were supposed to disappear. Instead, they became part of how a generation remembers the album, proof that unfinishedness can carry its own authority.Solange stands inside a bright gallery beside a John Chamberlain sculpture made from crushed and folded white and chrome-colored metal. The sculpture towers above her like a damaged machine or architectural ruin, its painted surfaces scarred while polished metal bulges outward in white light. Solange wears a floor-length black dress covered in small white marks and leans lightly into the work, looking directly at the camera. Green sculptures sit farther back, in the open room. The photograph was made by Davey Adésida and Sam Bloom for Interview’s 2025 conversation between Solange and Rainer Judd marking the publication of Living With Chamberlain. Solange’s relationship with Chamberlain’s work goes back much further. She recalled first encountering his sculptures at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa around 2008 or 2009 and having a visceral response. She began seeking his work out when traveling, including at the Menil Collection and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. What she recognized was not simply a taste for metal or monumentality, but a shared way of making. Solange described her own process as maximizing and then minimizing: gathering ideas, expanding them as widely as possible, and eventually locating the central form. Chamberlain’s crushed automobile steel, simultaneously chaotic and distilled, gave her a sense of possibility. That connection now reads almost prophetically. Solange’s practice has steadily moved beyond the album format into performance, architecture, curation, design, objects, and sculpture. Her 2018 Metatronia project at the Hammer Museum helped turn scenic design toward inhabitable form; in 2024 she made Orion’s Rise for the Met; and in 2026 she developed her first public large-scale sculpture for New York’s High Line. Seen from today, this portrait is not a musician visiting another artist’s work. It is one artist standing beside a language that helped her recognize her own, years before sculpture became one of the clearest ways she would speak.Solange stands in a wood-paneled interior beside a towering blue John Chamberlain sculpture of crushed metal. In a long black dress with sculptural sleeves, she rests one hand against the work and looks toward the camera. Chamberlain’s piece rises several times her height, its blue surfaces buckled and compressed into a roughly human form. Around them are other twisted metal forms in silver, black, brown, and color, making the room feel like a studio and landscape of industrial bodies. Davey Adésida and Sam Bloom photographed the image for Interview in 2025, alongside a conversation between Solange and Rainer Judd about the sculptor’s influence and Living With Chamberlain. Solange traced that influence to seeing Chamberlain at the Chinati Foundation around 2008 or 2009. She remembered responding physically before she had language for why. Later she understood a kinship between his “collision and chaos” and her own instinct to collect widely, build toward excess, then pare a project down until its essential form appears. The connection also runs through Texas. Chamberlain titled works after Texas towns; Solange grew up in Houston, returned to Marfa repeatedly, and in 2017 performed at Chinati among Donald Judd’s concrete works. Today the photograph feels like a bridge between influence and authorship. Through Saint Heron, Solange has become not only a recording artist but a curator, publisher, archivist, composer, designer, and institution-builder. Her Eldorado Ballroom series has created intergenerational stages for Black music and performance, while her sculptural practice has moved from stage environments into autonomous objects and public space. In September 2026, her first public large-scale sculpture arrived on New York’s High Line, a work concerned with material, light, touch, human energy, and everyday occupancy. Here, beside Chamberlain’s compressed metal, we can see one lineage being acknowledged just as Solange’s own spatial language comes fully into view.

🚀 Artist of the Day: Sun Ra

The cosmic jazz pioneer who declared himself from Saturn, Sun Ra reimagined what sound, and existence, could be. Through his music, he built worlds of freedom, blending ancient Egypt, space, and Black futurism into one infinite vision.

🗃️ #CreatorsAtWork #BlackSky #Art

Color film still of Sun Ra from Space Is the Place, shot in the Bay Area in 1972 and released in 1974. He stands outdoors in full cosmic regalia in front of a white car, with a dry hillside, road, trees, and an intensely blue sky behind him. His black-and-gold striped pharaonic headdress rises into a huge gold orb framed by two tall antenna-like prongs. A broad jeweled collar rests over a striped blue, red, black, and white tunic, while an enormous yellow-orange cape catches the wind and spreads across the frame like solar flame. His shoes echo the same saturated palette. The image captures the central visual idea of Sun Ra’s world: ancient Egypt, outer space, Black self-invention, and theater fused into one living language. Born Herman Poole Blount in Birmingham in 1914, he remade himself as Le Sony’r Ra and insisted he came from Saturn. That claim was not simply a joke or stage gimmick. It became part of a larger philosophy in which myth offered Black people a way to imagine existence beyond the racial limits imposed by America. Space Is the Place turned that philosophy into cinema. Directed by John Coney and co-written by Sun Ra and Joshua Smith, the film follows Ra returning to Earth and proposing another planet as a home for Black people, with music itself serving as a vehicle of liberation. In one of the film’s most famous exchanges, he tells young people that he comes to them as “the myth,” because a society that denies Black people full reality has already pushed them outside its definitions. The clothing matters just as much as the dialogue. Sun Ra rejected the boundary between costume and everyday dress, and the Arkestra’s handmade metallic robes, Egyptian forms, sequins, and space-age headpieces transformed performance into what he called cosmo-drama. Here, standing beside an ordinary car on an earthly road, he looks deliberately impossible. That tension is the point: the future is being staged in the present. The roadside becomes a launchpad for freedom.Portrait of Sun Ra from the Space Is the Place era, standing against a deep, electric-blue background in a monumental red-and-gold robe. His body is almost completely enclosed by the garment, which falls to the floor in broad panels of crimson, bright gold and bronze. A black-and-gold striped pharaonic headpiece frames his face. Above it rises the same extraordinary emblem seen throughout this period: a large metallic orb held between two long upright prongs, glowing under the lights like an artificial sun. Sun Ra looks slightly upward, making the portrait feel less like a conventional musician photo than an icon from a civilization that does not yet exist. That effect was deliberate. By the early 1970s, Sun Ra had spent decades constructing a universe in which music, clothing, poetry, philosophy, theater, technology, and ancient Egyptian imagery belonged to the same project. He called his stage spectacles “cosmo-drama,” and he treated clothing as part of the sound itself, once declaring, “Costumes are music.” The Arkestra’s garments were often handmade from metallic or found fabrics, assembled with the same experimental spirit as the music. This visual language reached one of its clearest forms around Space Is the Place. Sun Ra and the Arkestra recorded the album in Chicago in October 1972; Blue Thumb released it in 1973. The film, made in 1972 and released in 1974, translated his mythology into an Afrofuturist science-fiction story about Black liberation, interplanetary migration, and music as a technology powerful enough to change reality. Decades before the word “Afrofuturism” was coined, Sun Ra was already practicing it as daily life. The orb, pharaoh stripes, and cosmic robe were not an escape from Black history. They connected ancient African symbolism to a future in which Black existence could exceed the categories imposed on it. In this portrait, Sun Ra does not dress like he came from another world. He stands as evidence that another world can be invented.Color performance photograph of Sun Ra and his Arkestra at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 23, 1978 photographed by Leni Sinclair. Sun Ra stands near the front of the stage in a shimmering bronze-black robe, a beaded or metallic head covering framing his face. His right hand is raised as if cueing, blessing, conducting, or reaching into the air. Behind him, members of the Arkestra hold brass instruments, behind a steel sculpture of curved rods that arc overhead like trajectories, antennae, or orbital paths. Warm amber stage light turns the sculpture and Sun Ra’s robe into streaks of copper and fire against a dark background. The photograph captures the Arkestra at a moment when a Sun Ra concert had long since become far more than a conventional jazz set. Music, costume, movement, poetry, chanting, props, lighting, and spectacle were fused into what Ra called cosmo-drama, a ritual designed not simply to entertain an audience but to alter its sense of what was possible. This performance took place during the 1978 Ann Arbor Jazz Festival at Hill Auditorium, a festival dedicated that year to Duke Ellington. That context matters. Sun Ra revered the big-band tradition, especially Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, while pushing it through free improvisation, electronics, unusual instruments, theatrical staging, and what sounded to many listeners like music from another century. His work was not a rejection of jazz history so much as an argument that its history already contained the future. The steel sculpture surrounding him makes that idea visible. Traditional brass players remain in the frame, but their stage has become a cosmic environment of curves, metal, shadow, and motion. Sun Ra’s raised hand sits at the center, directing both orchestra and image. By 1978 he had spent decades asking audiences to imagine Black life beyond earthly restrictions. Here the concert hall becomes his spacecraft, the Arkestra its crew, and performance itself the engine.Square cover image for a 2024 reissue of Sun Ra and His Arkestra’s Jazz in Silhouette. A close portrait of Sun Ra fills the frame against a hot pink-red background bordered in yellow. His face is black-and-white, while oversized rounded sunglasses glow yellow-orange over his eyes. He wears a zebra-striped cap, a patterned collar, a purple metallic-looking top, and a large sun-shaped pendant at his chest. At upper left, bold yellow lettering reads “SUN RA,” with smaller text naming his Arkestra and the album title JAZZ IN SILHOUETTE beneath it. The psychedelic color treatment reflects the cosmic Sun Ra most listeners now recognize, but this is not the album’s original 1959 cover. It belongs to a modern 20th Century Masterworks reissue, released on blue vinyl in 2024. That distinction opens the deeper story of the record. Jazz in Silhouette was recorded in Chicago on March 6, 1959 and issued that May on Saturn, the independent label Sun Ra built with Alton Abraham to release music the established record business was unlikely to support. The earliest-known sleeve was hand-screened and credited to H. P. Corbissero, a name researchers have suggested may have been Sun Ra himself. Musically, the album stands at a threshold. The Arkestra still swings with the precision of the big-band and bebop traditions Ra knew deeply, but compositions such as “Enlightenment,” “Saturn,” and the expansive “Ancient Aiethopia” already point toward stranger harmonic, rhythmic, and philosophical territory. Sun Ra was not abandoning jazz’s past. He was treating it as raw material for another future. Saturn itself was part of the experiment: records appeared in small runs, were sold at performances, re-pressed, relabeled, and sometimes given new handmade art. This modern cover therefore creates a kind of time fold. The cosmic icon looks back at one of the records where his musical universe was still taking shape, reminding us that the spaceship was being built long before most people noticed it.

📽️ Artist of the Day: Jenn Nkiru

A British-Nigerian filmmaker blending rhythm, history, and surrealism, Jenn Nkiru’s work challenges how we see Blackness, womanhood, and time. Her film Black to Techno turns music into memory, and sound into storytelling.

Film still from The Carters’ 2018 “APESHIT” video inside the Louvre in Paris. Beyoncé stands at left in a glossy pink-lavender Peter Pilotto suit tied with a red sash, long honey-blonde curls falling over one shoulder, while Jay-Z stands at right in a mint-green double-breasted suit with a heavy gold pendant. They hold hands in front of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, which hangs centered behind them inside its climate-controlled case. The frame is symmetrical and almost ceremonial: two living Black artists occupy the foreground while one of the most famous images in Western art becomes the backdrop. Jenn Nkiru served as second-unit director on the Ricky Saiz-directed video, one of the projects that brought her visual language to a massive global audience. Nkiru has said this was her first time inside the Louvre. During production she remembered later returning while the museum was open and seeing visitors packed around the Mona Lisa, realizing how unusual it had been to stand so close to it while filming. “APESHIT” was shot across the Louvre over two nights and repeatedly placed Black bodies, dancers, fashion, intimacy and wealth in direct conversation with a collection shaped largely by European traditions. That tension connects closely to Nkiru’s wider practice, which asks who gets pictured, who gets remembered, and who gets to occupy institutions that define culture. The image is not hers alone, and the video’s primary director was Saiz, but her second-unit role belongs to an important chapter in her career. Soon after, she would push the same questions through her own experimental films, gallery work and later collaborations with Beyoncé. Here, Beyoncé and Jay-Z do not look up at the Mona Lisa as tourists. They face us. The painting watches from behind. For Nkiru, the museum setting reframed questions she had already explored at Tate: who owns culture, who gets represented inside it, and what happens when Black subjects claim space rather than asking permission.Portrait of Jenn Nkiru photographed by Rosaline Shahnavaz in 2019. Nkiru stands on top of a white table against a nearly bare white wall, looking directly at the camera with a calm, commanding expression. Her enormous natural hair spreads outward around her head and shoulders. She wears a yellow-green snakeskin slip dress over a fitted, high-neck patterned top, bright orange-red lipstick, dangling earrings, and glossy black thigh-high boots. Around her feet are small traces of an ordinary room: a book, papers or envelopes, a drinking glass, loose coins and a potted plant at the right edge. The flash makes her figure feel sharply cut from the pale space, turning an improvised tabletop into a stage. The photograph arrived during a defining year in Nkiru’s rise as both filmmaker and contemporary artist. In 2019 she released BLACK TO TECHNO, a 20-minute experimental film tracing techno from Black Detroit outward to Berlin through archival material, original footage, music and cultural history. The work was included in the 2019 Whitney Biennial, where Nkiru was one of 75 participating artists. It followed REBIRTH IS NECESSARY, the 2017 short that had already established her interest in collapsing past, present and future into a living Black archive. The portrait captures the person behind that expanding body of work at a moment when categories were becoming increasingly inadequate. Nkiru had directed independent films, worked on Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s “APESHIT,” and was moving freely between music video, experimental cinema and galleries. That refusal to stay in one lane remains central to her practice. Years later she would describe film as simply the most expansive container for her ideas. Shahnavaz’s portrait feels like an early visual version of that freedom: Nkiru elevated above the everyday room, self-possessed, vividly styled, and impossible to reduce to one frame. It now catches her at a threshold between independent Black experimental cinema and major institutions.Black-and-white behind-the-scenes portrait of Jenn Nkiru during production of REBIRTH IS NECESSARY in 2017, photographed by Paula Harrowing. Nkiru stands beside a large film camera mounted on a tripod, wearing a dark T-shirt and a baseball cap pulled low over her forehead. Her hands rest loosely together in front of her as she looks toward the camera rig with a focused, contemplative expression. The background falls softly out of focus, with equipment and indistinct crew or figures suggesting an active set around her. It is a quiet image of a director thinking between moments rather than performing for a portrait. The film being made here became one of the works that defined Nkiru’s artistic language. Commissioned by NOWNESS, the roughly ten-minute REBIRTH IS NECESSARY combines newly shot material with archival images and sounds to explore Blackness across altered time. Nkiru draws on jazz, hip-hop, Afrofuturism, African cosmologies and Black radical thought, folding voices and appearances connected to figures including Sun Ra, James Baldwin, Alice Coltrane, Audre Lorde, Kwame Nkrumah and Kathleen Cleaver into a rapid, dreamlike collage. Original footage was shot in South Africa and South London. Nkiru has described this method as “cosmic archaeology,” treating memory and history not as sealed records but as material that can be excavated, remixed and made active in the present. The film went on to win the Canal+ Award at Clermont-Ferrand and other honors, screen internationally, and become a key entry point into her practice. Looking back, this photograph catches that language while it was still being physically assembled. There is no finished montage, no gallery wall, no celebrity collaborator, only Nkiru beside the machine, watching. The image makes visible the labor behind the dream logic: research, framing, waiting, listening, and choosing what image should come next. It holds the focus before the cut, when an idea still depends on a crew, the cameras and time.Film still from Jenn Nkiru’s THE GREAT NORTH, a 2024 film about Manchester, memory, architecture, labor and Black history. The image is an extreme close-up of a dark-skinned person’s eye. Eyelashes, eyelid texture and the wet shine of the eye are rendered in intense detail, but the iris has been transformed into honeycomb. A tiny bee appears inside the patterned surface, turning the human eye into something biological, architectural and symbolic at once. Black bars above and below the widescreen frame makes the eye feel even more monumental. The bee is one of Manchester’s oldest civic symbols. The worker bee entered the city’s coat of arms in 1842 and came to represent Manchester as a hive of industrial activity, built through collective labor. Nkiru’s film takes that industrial history as a starting point but refuses to tell it only through factories and celebrated buildings. Commissioned by Factory International and developed over five years, THE GREAT NORTH moves across Manchester’s Black, Asian and Irish communities, linking living rooms, social clubs and community spaces to larger histories of cotton, empire, migration and the city’s architecture. Nkiru has pointed to a central contradiction: Manchester became enormously wealthy through cotton during the Industrial Revolution even though cotton did not grow there. Following that thread leads outward to the Global South, colonial extraction and the labor that powered British industry. She calls her method “cosmic archaeology,” making archives breathe rather than treating them as fixed evidence of a finished past. In that context, the surreal eye becomes more than an arresting image. The symbol of Manchester’s workers is embedded inside a Black gaze, asking us to reconsider who has been allowed to see, build and narrate the city. THE GREAT NORTH was also the first film independently produced through Nkiru’s MOTHERSHIP imprint, making its questions of history inseparable from her own pursuit of artistic ownership.

🎨 Artist of the Day: Jean-Michel Basquiat

From New York’s underground to the global stage, Jean-Michel Basquiat painted truth into every line. His art captured identity, chaos, and culture all at once, redefining what it meant to be a modern visionary.

What do you see in his work?

#CreatorsAtWork

Black-and-white photograph of Jean-Michel Basquiat painting in his Crosby Street studio in New York in 1983, photographed by Austrian artist and writer Roland Hagenberg. Basquiat bends deeply over a large work laid flat in front of him, dreadlocks falling toward the surface as one hand reaches down to paint or draw. He wears a dark long-sleeve shirt, loose paint-marked trousers and light sneakers. The studio is raw and visibly lived in: stained walls, scattered containers, a worn floor and another dark work covered in white symbols leaning behind him. Words, boxes, figures and fragments crowd the piece beneath his hand, including “ASBESTOS” and “TWO PLY.” Hagenberg titled the photograph “Basquiat painting with cigarette.” What makes the image unusual is that it catches Basquiat doing the work, not performing the mythology that later grew around him. Hagenberg’s 1983 Crosby Street photographs are among the rare surviving portraits of Basquiat actually painting in his studio. The year itself was pivotal. Basquiat was only 22 when he became one of the youngest artists ever included in the Whitney Biennial, his international reputation was accelerating, and his relationships with figures such as Andy Warhol were pulling him deeper into an art world he had entered with astonishing speed. Yet here, the fame sits outside the frame. There is no auction room, opening night or polished portrait, only an artist folded over a surface, surrounded by unfinished marks and the physical mess of making. Light cuts across the floor and Basquiat’s clothes, while the rough studio walls hold traces of other ideas in progress. The photograph preserves the part of Basquiat’s story that can disappear beneath the legend: before the crown became an icon, before the market turned his name into shorthand for genius, there was the daily act of reaching down, making another mark, crossing something out, and deciding what came next. It is Basquiat at work before history turns the room into legend.Color photograph of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat standing back-to-back at their joint exhibition at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York in 1985, photographed by Richard Drew for the Associated Press. Warhol stands on the left in black, pale hair framing a reserved expression, his arms folded across his chest. Basquiat stands on the right in a gray plaid suit, one arm folded across his body, looking directly toward the camera. Behind them, collaborative paintings fill the gallery walls with logos, hand-drawn figures, sweeping marks, symbols and layered color. The pose feels calm, but the history around it was anything but. By this point the two artists had spent roughly two years working together on paintings, often trading the canvas back and forth. Warhol would begin with recognizable imagery, product logos or silkscreened forms; Basquiat would answer with oil stick, paint, text and aggressive revisions, sometimes covering what Warhol had placed there. Keith Haring later described the collaborations as a conversation conducted in paint. The Shafrazi exhibition brought that conversation into public view in September 1985 and was promoted with the now-famous boxing photographs of both artists, casting collaboration as both partnership and sparring match. The critical response was harsh, and the show came near the end of their period of sustained collaboration. That gives this seemingly straightforward portrait an added charge. Warhol, a global art-world icon, and Basquiat, still in his mid-twenties and rising fast, stand almost shoulder to shoulder while the work they made together surrounds them. Their bodies point in opposite directions, but their backs meet. The image holds the friendship, competition and tension of the partnership in a single pose. It is not simply two famous artists in a gallery. It is a photograph of two visual languages colliding, influencing each other, and briefly creating a third language that belonged to neither artist alone.Color portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat photographed by Tseng Kwong Chi in New York in 1987, in “Jean Michel Basquiat NY, Jenkins.” Basquiat stands before a vivid yellow painted surface crowded with words, symbols, rough figures and blocks of pink, red, black and white. He wears a dark jacket over a shirt and tie, with one arm lifted so his hand rests in his hair. His gaze meets the camera directly. Behind him “JENKINS” appears among the marks, along with a crowned cartoon-like figure, a black-and-red rectangular form containing large white letters, crossed-out writing and the word “HORSESHIT.” The background feels less like scenery than another voice in the portrait. The title ties the portrait to Jenkins, another name inside the same East Village creative network. Tseng Kwong Chi was not an outsider arriving to document a celebrity. Born in Hong Kong and based in New York from 1978, he became part of the downtown art and club scene. He photographed friends and contemporaries including Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Madonna and Basquiat, building a visual record of a community where art, music and nightlife overlapped. By 1987, Basquiat was no longer the unknown young artist writing SAMO across Lower Manhattan. He was internationally famous and navigating an art market fascinated by both his work and his image. That same year, his friend and collaborator Andy Warhol died, ending a relationship that had shaped Basquiat’s middle years. Tseng’s portrait catches him in that late chapter without turning him into a monument. Basquiat is impeccably dressed yet relaxed, framed by color and language, his raised arm making the pose feel spontaneous rather than ceremonial. The picture remembers something larger than fame: these artists belonged to a living network. They photographed one another, painted beside one another, met in clubs and galleries, borrowed visual language, argued, collaborated and kept making. Tseng’s camera preserves Basquiat inside that world, not outside it.Black-and-white portrait of Jean-Michel Basquiat photographed by Richard Corman in New York in 1984. Basquiat sits close to the camera against a plain gray paper backdrop, leaning forward with both arms folded across his body. One hand stretches over the opposite shoulder, fingers resting against an oversized herringbone jacket; beneath it, a striped shirt hangs open at the collar. His hair forms a loose halo as he looks into the lens with a quiet expression. The spare portrait hides a lively story beyond the frame. Corman made the portrait at 57 Great Jones Street, Basquiat’s live-in studio, during a shoot for L’Uomo Vogue. Corman remembered roughly 30 people smoking, drinking, painting and listening to music. Basquiat was huddled quietly in a corner. Corman asked him to move to a calmer area and taped a sheet of gray seamless paper to the wall, creating the background seen here. The herringbone jacket was not Basquiat’s. It was brought as a fashion prop with instructions that he wear it. Corman recalled that once Basquiat put it on, it stopped feeling like wardrobe and seemed to become part of him, almost like a shell around the young artist. In 1984, Basquiat was already an international art-world phenomenon, moving between galleries, studios and New York’s downtown art world, yet Corman stripped all of that visual noise away. No paintings appear behind him. No crown, no SAMO tag, no crowded studio, no proof of celebrity. What remains is Basquiat’s face, hands, clothes and body language. The oversized jacket seems to hold him while his crossed arms hold the jacket, making the portrait feel guarded and exposed at once. Corman was interested in what sat behind Basquiat’s eyes, and the resulting image lets the viewer stay there for a moment. Before “Basquiat” became an art-market legend, this was Jean-Michel, still in his twenties, sitting in his own studio while a party carried on beyond a sheet of gray paper. The gray backdrop lets posture carry this whole story.
