Read now: thedigitalreads.com/b/what-the-r...

The spring that feeds the River Sallow has run for as long as anyone can remember. This year, in March, it stops.

Dr Tess Varley has spent twenty-five years measuring one English chalk stream. Now she has one last job: walk the whole river every month and record, in her grey waterproof notebooks, exactly how it dies. Each time the river's source moves further downstream, she ties a piece of blue twine where the water now starts. Soon the whole valley is watching the twine.

The notebooks won't stay clean. Her husband runs the water company whose boreholes are draining the springs. Her daughter has just been arrested for chaining herself to its gates. Her father, a river keeper for forty-nine years, is losing his memory as the river loses its water. As the pool below his cottage dries, he starts searching for something he threw into it on the night her mother nearly left.

Tess has a secret of her own. Twenty-one years ago she signed the report that said the boreholes would do no harm.

What the River Kept is told through field notes, taped recordings, letters and public-inquiry transcripts. It is about what we take, what we keep quiet, and the long work of putting things right.

It's for readers who love emotionally rich, research-textured fiction in the spirit of Where the Crawdads Sing, Lessons in Chemistry and H is for Hawk.

Scion, James Islington
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5
The first of my 5 stained-edge books this month is Scion, a #newrelease from an Aussie. As with all great books, the setting is the backdrop and it's revealed little by little, focusing on the task at hand: our MC is a contract killer.
