The #MadCaliph #alHakim of the #FatimidCaliphate ordered the destruction of all churches and synagogues within #Jerusalem, and on #ThisDayInHistory in 1009 the #ChurchOfTheHolySepulchre was razed and then hacked down to the bedrock. Constantinople was later allowed to rebuild it.

The most controversial of the #Fatimid sultans took power as an #Ismaili #caliph on #ThisDayInHistory in 996. #AlHakim, called the #MadCaliph, is infamous for his persecution of Jews and Christians, and for ordering the destruction of the #ChurchOfTheHolySepulchre in #Jerusalem.
