When Churchill dropped chemical weapons
It's drones dropping bombs now, not Churchill in a biplane over Iraq gassing the Kurds. Ansarallah, the Houthis, are giving Saudi mercenaries a bloody good hiding

My favourite fallen tree, just outside Churchill, Oxfordshire.
(Sadly, no fungi this year - presumably because of the drought.)

Churchill wanted a strong, united Europe, but he also wanted Britain to retain its own place in the world. That was a different era, with an empire and a Commonwealth at the centre of British thinking. Stop pretending history gives simple answers to modern questions.

The irony is that both sides can cherry-pick Churchill. Remainers point to his support for European unity; Brexiters point to his insistence on Britain’s separate role. The honest answer is that his vision doesn’t fit neatly into modern political tribalism.

Churchill wasn’t arguing that Britain should surrender its independence to a European federation. He supported European unity while keeping Britain institutionally separate. That distinction matters, whether you’re pro-EU, anti-EU or somewhere in between.

Churchill’s vision was shaped by the British Empire, the Commonwealth and the special relationship with the US. He wanted a united Europe, but Britain retaining its own global role. You can’t understand his position by cherry-picking one speech.

In his 1946 Zurich speech, Churchill called for a “United States of Europe”. But he envisaged France and Germany leading it, with Britain helping from outside. Quoting him as proof he wanted Britain inside today’s EU misses the point entirely.

Churchill supported a united Europe. That much is true. But he didn’t envisage Britain simply joining a European federation. He saw Britain, the Commonwealth and the US in a different strategic position. Context matters. History isn’t a slogan. 🇬🇧🇪🇺
