I meant to post about it earlier but it's totally bonkers that Cassette Beasts' sequel is implementing a fucking NEMESIS SYSTEM?!?!?!

In summary, any beast you defeat in battle has a chance to become a rogue. When this happens, they gain a new personality, a new elemental type, choose a name, and swear to take revenge on you.

After this they return periodically to ambush you, demand rematches, insert themselves into story battles, and generally act as a nuisance! Each time you defeat one, it takes note of what factors led to its defeat, and learns a new skill so it can do better next time. And they’re not restricted just to skills their species can normally learn! So if you expect to win every battle with the same inflexible strategy, you’ll get your bottom thoroughly kicked.

Each time you defeat a rogue, they give you their latest skill as a sticker that you can apply to your own tapes. I think this is a neat way to show a new mechanic in action, and its purpose, before giving the player the option to use it in their own builds. This is using the “carrot” instead of the “stick”.
Rogues gather experience in the background as you play, and level up when you rest. A new difficulty setting, separate from the level scaling and battle intelligence difficulty settings, controls how quickly they can do that, and how well they select their new skills. Resting also advances a clock in your quest log that determines when your rogue will next be out to get you. So don’t spend too long lazing around or they’ll catch up to you!

The quest log is also where you can review the skills you’ve seen rogues use before, to help you prepare for your next encounter.

I don’t want to detail everything rogues can do in this post - some of it should definitely remain a surprise for now! But let’s just say they like to escalate, and they affect the world around them.

Traffikrab's new hat

A five-panel comic featuring Wallace (fat bald man wearing a hard hat, headphones, and a high-visibility construction vest. He has big eyebrows and a stubbly beard), and Traffikrab (a little crab monster with four claw legs, one big red eye, and usually wears an orange traffic cone on its back.)
Panel 1: A cone-less Traffikrab is cowering under a bush. It has a long curling tail usually hidden under its cone. Its previous cone is laying in the foreground, burned in half and billowing black smoke. Wallace kneels in front of the hedge and says, "Sorry li'l guy. Didn't mean to hit ya that hard."
