The dunnock is a streaky brown-and-grey bird, with a dark grey head and a thin bill.

The dunnock is a small bird, about the size of a robin, which is common in gardens, parks, hedgerows, scrub and along woodland edges. Dunnocks are shy birds, hopping about in low vegetation and around the edge of lawns, feeding on small insects, worms and seeds. When two males meet, however, they become animated with territorial calling and wing-flicking. Males and females will form strong pairs, but the female will still mate with another male, so neither male knows who the father is and both supply her chicks with food. They nest in hedges or shrubs, laying up to five eggs.

Shovelers are my favourite duck. I just love their cartoonishly large bills!

I believe this is a male in his “eclipse” plumage, which is worn outside of the breeding season to aid camouflage.

A stunning Shoveler (Spatula clypeata) photographed in water. Their plumage is detailed, featuring beautiful colours reminiscent of autumn. I believe this bird is a male, in his “eclipse” plumage (see below).

From The Wildlife Trusts -

The shoveler lives up to its name - it can be distinguished by its long, broad 'shovel' of a bill. The male has a dark green head, white breast and orangey-brown sides during the breeding season. Females are mottled brown, but have a pale blue forewing.

As with many duck species, male (or 'drake') shovelers moult their colourful feathers when the breeding season is over, and go into 'eclipse' plumage - a mottled brown, just like the female (or 'hen'). This helps to camouflage them from predators.
