"AI, can you help me with 'whip round'?"

AI response –

No, it's not related to legislative "whipping."

In politics, a whip (or "party whip") is an official who organises MPs/peers and pressures them to vote the party line. Phrases like "removing the whip" mean suspending someone from the parliamentary party.

A whip round (or whip-round) is an entirely different British informal expression. It means a quick, informal collection of money from a group of people-essentially "passing the hat" to buy a gift, cover a cost, or help someone out.

The two terms share a distant historical root in the hunting term whipper-in" (the person who keeps the hounds together with a whip), but they diverged long ago and mean completely different things today. In the article, Lee Anderson is clearly using the money-collection sense as a joke about buying a new walking stick.
