Patriarchal violence has many faces, and all women have experienced it in different ways – whether from a partner, a boss or a police officer.

As women, we currently have many reasons to take to the streets:

the genocide in Palestine continues, digital sexualised violence – as in the cases of Claudia Wuttke or Collien Fernandes – is on the rise, and a femicide is committed every day in Germany.

BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE TAKE TO THE STREETS TO PROTEST AGAINST WAR, MILITARISATION AND PATRIARCHAL VIOLENCE?

In recent years, there have been several pivotal moments that have shown that the way the German police and politicians deal with women protesters is becoming increasingly harsh.

There are repeated reports of women being treated differently during ‘police operations’ and experiencing sexist violence.

Police officers who deliberately subject women to sexist abuse at demonstrations, choke them, punch them in the face, pull their hair or force them to undergo strip searches.

Trans people also report being forced to undergo strip searches under the pretext of ‘determining their gender’.

Refugee women who experience sexist violence at the hands of the authorities at the EU’s external borders and within Germany.

And all this simply because they want to fight for a future in which they can be free as women and as human beings.

This violence cannot be treated as an isolated incident, because it is not just individual police officers who are the perpetrators.

Sexist violence is often particularly intimidating and can lead to feelings of shame and powerlessness.

Patriarchy seeks to humiliat…
