It’s been a week for wildlife! 2 days ago, I saw a second box turtle, and today, Bob rescued a juvenile rat snake from being hit by the garage door. 🐍🐢

Juvenile rat snakes look nothing like the adults! 😀💜

A colour photograph of a female common box turtle, almost closed up in her shell, just her head showing a little. The turtle is wet from rain, and is in profile, facing right, in tall grass, with brown and green plant matter around her.
Her shell is brown and yellow, and she is possibly about 5-10 years old. It’s not possible to tell exact age from the lines on the scutes (the individual plates on the shell), but the general idea is to count the lines and divide by 2. However, the growth lines may occur more than once a year if there is plenty of food. This turtle seemed very healthy and alert, and went charging off into the tall grass after I photographed her.
Overall colours are brown and bright green plants, and the turtle is mostly brown, with yellow rings on her shell. Her eyes and body are brown.A colour photograph of a juvenile rat snake, taken from above, on the concrete pavers of our patio. The snake is in full sun, and is oriented head towards the bottom of the image, tail up. The snake is lying diagonally on one paver, their tail just curling around on the moss between the pavers at the top corner.
Juvenile rat snakes have brown and tan stripes along their body, with a diamond pattern of tan and brown on their head. This one is about 10 inches in length, and their scales are bright, and the snake was handled as little as possible.
They are sometimes mistaken for juvenile copperheads by inexperienced people, and are killed (don’t do that!). They’re not poisonous, and their teeth are not large enough to pierce most human skin (their mouths are too small to get a good grip, though they will try to trike if stressed, this is defensive behaviour). Rat snakes eat insects and small mammals, and are great for pest control. We have a hibernaculum (snake dormitory!) of rat snakes under an old chimney in the yard, which we take care of.
In sum: Rat snakes are fren! :)

I took this pic through glass at the Twinsburg, OH, Nature Center. He was a cooperative model, showing me those lovely red eyes. This is an Eastern box turtle. No hiding for this one! It watched every move I made.

Creek House Wildlife #3: the ones you sometimes see. Deer, box turtles, skinks, a mole I know only by his tunnels, and otters Zach has seen and I haven't.

Got my COVID and ‘flu vaccines today, so my left arm is feeling a bit sorry for itself. Beats getting sick, though! 😊💜

I didn’t draw enough to post today, so here is a box turtle from 2 days ago in Halloween colours! 🎃🧡🖤🤎

A colour photograph of a box turtle with orange and black markings all over, each side scute on the shell (four per side) almost like an orange handprint with the fingers pointing down, and the five center back scutes like orange feathered nose helms.
The turtle (sex unknown; I didn’t want to stress them out by picking them up) is facing head right, on bare earth and cedar needles, with very small green seedlings on the left. The turtle’s nose is just barely poking out of their shell (I waited several minutes for them to open up), and the heel of the right front foot and a bit of the leg is visible.
There are little orange dots on the turtle’s head.A colour close up photograph of the front of a box turtle with bright orange and black markings all over, the side scutes like an orange handprint with the fingers pointing down, and the center back scutes like orange feathered nose helms.
