Fun story for #BlueBrewBooks!
I attended my first meeting of our local 100+ Women Who Care (more about that in ALT). Part of the fundraiser was a raffle. Everyone wanted to win the gift card for a local garden center (me too!) I bought 5 tickets, put 4 in for the garden center and...

At the last second, I put one in for a local bookstore bag. One of the women wished me good luck, but I never win anything. Fast forward to the ticket drawings. A young girl pulled a ticket and handed it to the woman next to her because she couldn't read it. At that moment, I knew it was my name. Sure enough, I won three books by Maine authors, three packs of greeting cards made by a local artist, and a great tote bag. So, these 3 books are my TBR list!
100+ Women Who Care is a national organization with local chapters. Members meet quarterly, hear presentations from 3 nominated non profits, and vote for one to receive the evening's donations of $50 per member. Raffle proceeds are split by the other 2 organizations. It's a fantastic way to network and raise funds for a worthy cause.

I finally read The Women, by Kristin Hannah. I was hesitant because I'm not a huge fan of her writing. The beginning of the story, in Vietnam, was engaging, informative and heartbreaking at times. After Frankie returns home however...

The Vietnam part of the book gave a good sense of the chaos and ambivalence that surrounded the conflict. After Frankie returns home, you can feel her frustration and disbelief due to how returning soldiers were shunned, and for the women especially, dismissed. After this, the writing dissolves into Hannah's typical repetition, trite descriptions (how many times do we need to know someone had a bouffant hairstyle or wore a polyester suit to know we're in the late 60's- early 70's?) The main character's difficulties seem to cross over from PTSD due to the war to romantic issues due to poor decisions. Maybe they're the same thing...
Problems with alcoholism, drug abuse and lack of resources for support are clearly detailed.
Then she wraps things up quickly and neatly and ties it in a happy ending bow
I didn't hate it, but it will probably be the last book I read by this author. Sorry if you loved it!

I can’t wait to open this up! His first, How to Love a Forest, was soooo good! If you ❤️ the New England forest, you will ❤️ his books.

Good morning, Susan. I hope your Sunday is going well. The rain has stopped for a while from the hurricane, but it looks like we’ll get more later. I hope your #BlueBrewBooks are going well! 📚 Too many distractions going on in my house to be able to read 🤷🏼‍♀️ 😊 Have a great day and a wonderful week! ☕️

I just started this epic and I’m hooked. From the first page the author grabs you. But settle in for over 600 pages of a story that takes you on a journey of family ties.

This novel was a slice of life story of a young woman who finds her path after events cause her to venture from her normal routines. No major action plots, just how real life sidetracks can change us.

Good morning, Susan! ☕✨

Something to brighten your morning as it will be a busy day for both of us with #BlueBrewBooks and #Stunday.

Have a fun day today my friend! ✨☕📚💐💫

A bright multi-colored spring silk-flower arrangement in a shallow white bowl is on a slightly raised circular platform in the center of a round wooden table. In the background is a window that looks out to a parking lot. A circular, rainbow sun stained glass hangs in the window and five various sizes and shapes of wine bottles sit on the window sill. A black candelabra is partially seen at the top of the image.

Good morning! I had a crazy-busy day at work yesterday, so I'm spending today recovering with books and snacks. I'm currently reading this month's #BannedBookSkyClub "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel.

This one's really resonating with me - I see so many facets of my family in the story.

In the book I cowrote with best friend Michael D. Poe, the character of Ncon is this dark, way too serious former assassin. Michael, as with the character he created for the book, Figment, has ways of making the scene lighter. Cartoons by Poe

Shows a lunchbox cover with the name BLACKSENT and the three characters from that book: Figment, a mage; Ncon Barsin, a former assassin; Zandor, a wizard. Cartoon style of the Powerpuff girls.A cartoon of the character, Ncon Barsin, from the novel BLACKSENT Book of The Umbra by Michael A LaFlamme and Michael D. Poe. Cartoon in the style of the Powerpuff girls.

Good morning, Susan! Happy Sunday #ECK worldwide. A #BlueBrew request, please for this #BlueBrewBooks Sunday. I'm about halfway through "The Witch and the Tsar" by Olesya Salnikova Gilmore. Though written in 2022, it reads like a classic Russian novel from 100 years earlier. Highly recommended.

Good morning Susan and lovers of books and coffee!
I decided to try a classic sci-fi/horror novel since it's October. I had heard of this one from the adaptations that I've never seen. Good tension while also delving into philosophical and psychological issues. #BlueBrewBooks #DayOfTheTriffids
