By Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918), the first professional African American painter in the Pacific Northwest, “Castle Geyser, Yellowstone,” 1890, oil on canvas, 21.125 x 14.375 iinches, Denver Art Museum. #art #blackart #blackartist #blackartists #BlackHistory #arthistory

From the museum: “He first visited Yellowstone in 1886 and, after settling in Helena in 1889, he painted renditions of the National Park for tourists traveling along the Northern Pacific Railway. Castle Geyser, Yellowstone features a prominent geological feature named because its tall cone structure. Castle Geyser erupts about every 14 hours. Water from the eruption reaches up to 75 feet and lasts about 20 minutes, according to the National Park Service. Using a low horizon line of darkened forest, Brown emphasizes the height and brilliance of the erupting geyser. The billowing white spray complements the layers of pink and orange sediment in the foreground. Because the base of Castle Geyser is actually quite white, these warm colors, also reflected on the clouds in the background, suggest that we are witnessing a sunset eruption. The painting combines Brown’s observations of the geyser as well as his artistic license in choosing beautiful complementary colors.”

Also from the museum: “Like his parents and siblings, Brown was listed as Black in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. His biographer Robert Chandler states that in Sacramento, where Brown landed in 1858, he was also listed as Black. However, after his move to San Francisco in 1861, this racial identifier disappeared. As Caoimhe Morgan-Feir writes for Canadian Art, the fact that his race was not identified in publicity for an exhibition of his landscape paintings in Victoria, BC, probably underscores that he passed there as white. If Brown had been perceived as Black, it would have certainly made the papers. This omission matters, for it helps reveal how Brown negotiated racial prejudice by passing as white within the notoriously exclusionary field of fine art. It also reminds us to pay attention to the omissions in our own historical collections, in which works by Black artists and other artists of color are all too frequently missing.”

Who doesn’t like breakfast in the morning?
——
I’m really enjoying these lore related illustrations. I finally feel like my story will have a proper voice—I just need to finish writing some things. There’s some lore in the alt text :)
#art #ocsky #originalcharacters #ocart #illustration #blackartist

Diana waiting for her breakfast (bread) while talking to a little goat boy. They both have plant powers so their eyes and hair are green to some degree. The baker in the back is none too pleased about either of their presences. He is a zebra centaur.

Signs:
- CONCESSIONS
- NO TOKEN, NO SERVICE
- JOIN NOW

Lore Context:
Diana and the goat boy are considered outsiders among those within the Unicorn Queendom because they were created by different gods. Uma (she/her), Goddess of War and Wisdom, created centaurs and orcs. They can’t transform into humanoid and beast forms like beast-men can. Goel (he/him), God of Land and Transformation, created the beast-men and is hated by Uma. Irwin (they/them), God of Time and Balance, created humans and elves—they are respected by Uma but they’re creations, namely humans, are mostly tolerated. Those within the Queendom don’t really respect anyone who’s outside of it with some exceptions from those who live in the border towns/cities and merchants, generally speaking.

Humanoid dragons in a tavern—they’re all in a drunken stupor with the exception of a yellow dragon in the back who is paying for them on her gold earnings. The scene is lively with two dragons, one blue and orange (right) the other green and pink (left), both in drunken bliss. The blue and orange one is raising his mug with a wide smile on his face. The green and pink one is slumped over the table, still licking the ale in their cup with leftover food beside them. The other six dragons in the background are doing similar actions with three of them sitting at the bar area.

Lore:

The tables and seats in the tavern are embattled with fire stones to keep the dragons warm.

The tavern is carved inside a mountain.

The points on the dragons noses show how powerful they are with five points being the highest (not shown here). Three pointed dragons are the most common and five point dragons are royalty or direct descendants of the Mother of All Dragons.

The yellow dragon is Talos in her Artemis persona. Artemis is how she fights in The Pit — a place where dragons, no matter the size or class type, can fight and earn money.

Each robe on the dragons is unique to their life experience or birth. The stripes on the blue and orange dragon means he’s married. The other patterns on his robe shows his occupation as a livestock herder. In comparison, Talos shows that she’s an orphan. This allows her to adopt the persona of Artemis smoothly as it provides her a false backstory.
