Not often I get to see a first for Britain and even better when it is only a couple of miles away!! Sadly not a tick but this Grey Heron/Great Egret hybrid is a very elegant bird. #birdingscotland

Mute Swans and Little Grebes both have a tendency to wander down the River Dee to Aberdeen Harbour, but it was curious to see the way this grebe stuck very closely to the swans, as if there was some symbiosis or companionship involved.

A pair of Mute Swans are swimming on some rippled water, as is a Little Grebe just to the left of them.

A crazy 10 hours of birding on #isleofcoll today. The fleeting highlight was my first buff-breasted sandpiper in Breachacha bay before it was flushed by a Merlin, which I’d normally be happy to see. To make up for it two golden eagles flew past my house when I returned this evening #birdingscotland

The new muddy pools at St Fittick's drew out a Jack Snipe this evening, my first of the autumn. I must have happened upon it as it was feeding, but inevitably it saw me first and froze still.

A Jack Snipe is crouching low to some mud next to a small pool in which it's reflected. Behind is some green and brown vegetation.

Good to see active migration on Barra today with Barnacle Geese and Whooper Swans on the move, hundreds of Icelandic Redwings arriving, at least 5 Yellow-browed Warblers around the island and the Blackpoll Warbler present for a second day at Glen giving us great views. #BirdingScotland #RareBirdsUK

Nice to see once again that this Drake American wigeon has returned to Newshot Island. #digiscoped with kowa884 using iPhone16Pro in bright and windy conditions.

A Raven has returned to my street after a long absence. Currently calling from the top of a tree. I do love that a bird like this will come in to an urban area. #BirdingScotland

A big splash of colour at Tresta today with this beautiful first-winter Golden Oriole offering lovely views. Golden 'O's are scarce migrants to Shetland with the vast majority of records in spring and only a handful of records in October. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

Surprise Kingfisher on quick whizz around Portsoy just before dusk, by rockpools near the fish shop.

Patch ✔️

Slightly distant photo of a Kingfisher, perched on dark-coloured rocks with some algae patches.

Our daily searches for American Pipits among the piles of rotting seaweed on a Vatersay beach haven't so far yielded our target species, but we have had cracking views of Jack Snipe feeding out in the open. #BirdingScotland

Stinky Bay, Benbecula becomes a temporary home to storm driven Grey Phalaropes most autumns. This cracker was as usual showing very nicely. #BirdingScotland #BirdingOuterHebrides

Blackpoll Warbler at Glen today, a good find by Calum Scott and only the second record for Barra, a day short of a year since the first record. #BirdingScotland #RareBirdsUK

Long eared Owl from this morning #BirdingScotland One of very few highlights of what has been another very poor month. No Whinchat, Lesser Whitethroat or Garden Warbler this autumn, with the latter presumably missed for the year. Mid way through Oct and still not seen a Goldcrest!!

2nd LEO of the month, this time in the walled garden of Holland Farm

2 yellow browed warblers new today at the lodge plantation on #isleofcoll along with the olive-backed pipit which is still lingering.

Nice to see 12 Greenland white-fronts in the field opposite as well. #birdingscotland
