After a few days of calm or no wind, I guess it was only a matter of time before I returned to my username. Appropriately I get hit with nasty headwinds along the Columbia River & climbing up out of the river valley east of Portland! 😭🤣🌬️🚵🏼‍♂️

Stand with cyclists.
Ride with them too.

Posting in solidarity with all those fighting to keep bike lanes in Toronto and beyond.

Every pedestrian, cyclist, and driver death along here belongs to Doug Ford, Prabmeet Sarkaria, and their government. Even though they legislated away the right to sue in advance.

Extremely cool postdoctoral fellowship opportunity with one of the all-time greats in the field, Dr. Eric Miller at the University of Toronto. Help take transportation modelling to the future by giving bicycles the attention they deserve in our quantitative models! #BikeTO #BikeSky #PhDSky

Active Travel Analysis & Planning Using an Advanced Activity/Travel Demand Model System: A Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunity

The University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute (UTTRI, https://uttri.utoronto.ca/) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) to play a leading role in a two-year Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Alliance-Advantage project. The project involves: developing new models of bicycle route and mode choice; implementing these models in an advanced, operational agent-based microsimulation activity/travel demand forecasting system for the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA); and using this model system to develop effective bicycle policies and infrastructure for improving sustainable and equitable accessibility and mobility within the region. The PDF will work under the supervision of Prof. Eric Miller, cosupervised by Profs. Shoshanna Saxe and Timothy Chan.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated strong experience in discrete choice modelling and, more generally, travel demand modelling. Experience in bicycle modelling and planning is desirable, as is experience with machine learning methods. The candidate must have strong communication and project management skills, and be able to work effectively in a team environment.

The University of Toronto is consistently ranked in the top 20-25 universities in the world. The Toronto metropolitan region is the largest in Canada and has consistently been the fastest growing major North American urban region, providing an excellent “living laboratory” for
studying urban dynamics and policy formation.

Applicants should submit their CV, graduate school transcripts and a one-page (maximum) statement of qualifications and interest in the position by email to Prof. Eric Miller, eric.miller@utoronto.ca. International applications are welcome, but the applicants must have completed their PhD within five years of their appointment date.

Good things happen when people (and bikes) take to the streets.

We stood in the lanes, rode circuits around the threatened area, and protested the trucks carrying pylons until they gave up and left.

Dozens of cyclists still there when I left. 🫡

View over my handlebars of bike lane with flexi-posts, and a cyclist on a city bike. Behind the trees, the evening sun and clouds glow mauve and peach.

Not an image of the protest, just one of the journey there. Didn’t want to share anyone’s face.

I just got my first flat tire after riding thousands of miles on my "new" bike. Actually, I got TWO flat tires at the same time from the same giant pothole that a car unintentionally forced me into. It's my birth week. Is this a sign I should upgrade my tires to GP5000s? #bikesky
