Went out Wednesday morning to catch clouds draped across the peaks from a departing storm -- but they cleared out too quickly. So I settled for a bit of birds in flight at the Mormon Lake Overlook -- where the escarpment creates updrafts conducive to birds just floating in place.

Flying fast past the distant light-brown surface of a massive ocean rock, a brown and white common murre is frozen in time by this shot as it raises its right wing mid-flap. These pretty birds have a brown head with a thin light-colored line that trails away from their eye and toward the back of their head. The brown feathers cut off in a neat and sharp line at their neck, and the rest of the bird's body is white.
