Both genders secrete a tangerine smelling odor from the back of their necks. A ruff sniff is a courtship behavior where a bird will bury its face in the ruff of another bird and take a deep whiff.

It’s Birdtober! Day 1 is the Willow Ptarmigan. Because of the prominent combs of the eyes, the males made me think of Groucho Marx. I didn’t include Groucho’s eyeglasses because glasses on a bird is ridiculous.
