" #Yousen kept whispering, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," as, with a board and a sledgehammer, he systematically turned all the bones in #Astarion 's feet to powder while #Cazador read a light novel and offered occasional suggestions." @tkingfisher.com #astarionbook #baldursgate3astarion #godey

More renders of #HahndenSuriel with that long hair. I can't. Also peep the pink robe and the glow :3 #astarionbook #densuriel #baldursgate3astarion @tkingfisher.com thank you for creating this character who I'm now having FAR too much fun with 😏

the paladin aasimar Hahn den Suriel sitting in a dark room. His eyes are glowing white. He is wearing a pink dressing gown. His skin is somewhat yellow and metallic and glowing in the shadows. Behind him there is a stained glass window with diamond shaped panes. There is one bright light in the room that appears to be coming from elsewhere, not the window.

the paladin Hahn den Suriel shirtless in a prayerful posture. He has hair past his shoulders that is copper looking and metallic. His skin looks like gold. He is wearing a necklace that is made of gold. His hands are folded like he is praying and he is looking up to a light from an unknown source. There appears to be smoke or dust in the air around him.

The paladin Hahn den Suriel looking triumphant from battle perhaps. He has a sword and a shield and is wearing a red and gold cover over his armor. You can see the mail over his arms. He is smiling.

Looks like Stephen Rooney was actually quite involved in keeping Astarion’s voice intact so thanks for your service 🫡
Lots of echoes of my review in this interview, I thought it was great: www.grimdarkmagazine.com/interview-wi...
#baldursgate3astarion

[TK] Astarion is frankly hilarious in-game. Part of what I focused on, and that Stephen Rooney reinforced, is that Astarion does not want to show weakness and so covers up really horrible experiences with jokes. He likes to complain, but he's funny while he does it.
The thing is, that's a very human reaction. People in terrible situations make jokes. Talk to any EMT or
emergency room nurse, and they will tell you about the most horrendous things in ways that will make you howl with laughter. Hell, watch M*A*S*H*. So it's ultimately less hard to balance than you might think, as long as you keep that in mind.

like this..." and so on. Among other things, it was very helpful for keeping Astarion as self-centered as we all know he can be. Left to my own devices, I sometimes err on the side of "not being completely awful," and
while that works if you're writing, say, a paladin, it's not so good for our favorite vampire elf.

More generally, we ultimately settled (I think correctly) that on-screen torture was fine but rape is a rough read, and so much of what happens to Astarion is tied up in largely non-consensual sex that we tried very hard to get that bit right.

I cannot express the amount of struggle it has been to hide shadows LMAO but I love it though. HC - #Astarion got his shadow back with the tadpole. A small no spoilers selection of my #baldursgate3astarion #bookreview you can find on tumblr. I liked the dark humor, but found the pacing lackluster.

Astarion by T. Kingfisher - my unpopular opinion is that it was Fine, Actually.
** *12
(spoilers don't begin until after the cut, if you want to read the beginning)

In general, many people seem to want something black and white out of this book, but Astarion is a creature of contradictions: he likes to be looked at but not touched, except when he doesn't; he insists that all that matters to him is his own self-interest, except when it doesn't. I do think he's kind of a whiny pervert, sorry (more on this later), but he's also a victim of brutal physical and sexual assault who is deserving of empathy and of justice. Me too, buddy (on both counts).

I think Astarion cares a great deal about sex, and that's part of why it's so cruel that it was twisted for him in this painful way. So I'm not all that surprised, or upset, that he keeps trying to find a way through what's happening to him to enjoy some version of sexual freedom.
So for everyone who is damning this book and saying that it bears no resemblance to the character they love (#NotMyAstarion), it...isn't, quite, that's correct. To the extent that Astarion resembles a vampire stereotype in this novel, it's because that is a role he was clearly playing, both in the beginning of BG3 and here. He believes this about himself, and has to unlearn it.

Astarion: Yes. I suppose there's not much point in me if I won't have sex. My only talent, I'm fully aware.
