Beneath a hazy summer sky we are high up a mountain looking through a gap between the trees and over treetops. Nestled in the foothills, a valley hundreds of feet below is home to a rather large cluster of farm fields and houses and the tip of a long, narrow lake. That lake snakes through a narrow gap two forested foothills and emerges in a wider portion of the valley with more farms and forests. Beyond that, a long, lower mountain with a flattish crest is very indistinct in the haze.

May 29, 1983: I began hiking exactly at 11:00 beneath a heavy overcast, but no rain. My first three miles were the climb up Big Bald.

Walking through a large mountaintop meadow slanting gently upward to an unseen summit. There is a dense fog, visibility is only around 30 feet (about 9 meters) or so. The meadow is covered in lush green grass several inches in height. Several small shrubs rise from the meadow around us. Most have cranberry colored leaves, one has leaves of a dull pale olive and yellow. A few smaller shoots have bright green leaves.

July 3, 1983: My final twelve miles today were in Shenandoah. The trail inside the park was well-graded and almost completely cleared of overgrowth. I hiked through dignified old forests of stately trees.

June 12, 1983: Before 6:30, as the first faint blue twilight tinged the blackness, I was on my way. The woods were at their prettiest in those fleeting moments before sunrise; I promised myself that I would try to get early starts more often.

We emerge from the forest into a high pasture covered with a silvery morning fog. The rising sun is peeking over the horizon, painting the scene with a rich, golden backlighting. A small herd of cattle is grazing far to our right, floating dimly in silver-gold mists which clung to the slopes and contours of the field, concealing the ground below and washing out the horizon. A few scattered tall trees rise through the mists on the edge of the field. It is an unearthly sight. It looks like cow heaven.

May 10, 1983: We had already covered almost ten miles when we stopped for lunch in a clearing at Beech Gap, three miles past the summit. The next portion of the hike was every bit as scenic as the morning’s had been.

A small stream in a rocky bed has created a shallow ravine that slopes down the mountainside. The stream creates cascades and flumes as it runs down the ravine over and around the many boulders, tree trunks and branches that have fallen into the ravine. To our right, a large tree with a massive web of exposed roots grows directly on the stream bank. Around the stream is a dense thicket of rhododendron trees not flowering yet growing about twice as tall as a man. Some vines and leafy shrubs grow along the forest floor. A hiker is filling a water bottle from a rock in the middle of the stream.
