Fossil-fueled drought is drying up Maine's groundwater, and the lame-duck Congress is planning to eviscerate the Clean Water Act and accelerate climate pollution with #BAAJA

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 17, 2026, 1:16 PM

New post by @riogranderift.bsky.social on #BAAJA

"BAAJA, the Lee-Capito-Heinrich-Whitehouse industrial fast-tracking deal, is firmly on the side of market dominance"

@archhelmer.bsky.socialOct 16, 2026, 7:51 PM

The permitting reform in #BAAJA would centralize decision-making power+regulatory review for natural & cultural resources protection laws in the same fed land managing agencies that are currently being run by a skeleton crew. Superficial permit reviews in a system designed to fail. #ProtectSec106 šŸŗ

It very obviously can't be good for greenhouse pollution, which is why the US fossil fuel industry is the biggest sectoral backer of #BAAJA.

Good to see the Abundance faction backing away from the claim that BAAJA will reduce CO2 emissions. I guess the modeling isn’t going be as friendly as they thought it was going to be.

Jane Flegal @JaneAFlegal •29m X This is one reason it is hard & maybe counterproductive to evaluate
BAAJA thru the lens of *immediate* emissions impacts (where, again, I think clean is advantaged); the actual emissions impacts of the bill will depend on the complex ways it shapes the world & what it enables.

We have known the modeling was BS this whole time.

We OF COURSE want to reduce CO2. We of course WANT more renewable energy. We want IT ALL to be renewable energy.

But we have to be clear eyed about the facts and resist the pitfalls of wishful/magical thinking—on #BAAJA and everything else.

Oh look #BAAJA does almost everything the Big AI front group Chamber of Progress wants on "new energy deployment"

(No idea why the preview image is @mikelevin.org)

The lame duck is going to cripple the next Congress, especially the corrupt #BAAJA, which is political suicide for Democrats, since many of them plan to vote for it

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 16, 2026, 2:29 AM

One of the few roadblock to #BAAJA's passage in the lame-duck Senate is that none of the Democrats who plan to run for president in 2028 will vote for it, because everyone in the Beltway knows that it stinks to high heaven.

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 16, 2026, 1:42 AM

The reason DC lifers are so desperate to pass #BAAJA is to save the data-center bubble. Believe the asset managers.

PIMCO: Data center politics ā€œare bad — and seemingly getting worse.ā€

"weaker protections for water and wildlife" certainly fall within the category of "everything". As all of us are about to learn to our chagrin in the shockingly immediate wake of #BAAJA's passage.

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 16, 2026, 1:22 AM

The National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers is not pussyfooting around. #BAAJA is "a legislative assault on the sovereignty of Tribal Nations and, if enacted, would be an egregious violation of the federal government’s trust and treaty responsibilities."

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 16, 2026, 1:04 AM

The @sierraclub.org on #baaja has the implicit assumption that its lame-duck passage is inevitable. Repeated references to "over the next month" as the time frame for engaging on this 417-page fossil-fueled monstrosity, which will go to the Senate floor without public hearings testimony, or debate

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 15, 2026, 11:56 PM

Taps the sign: ā€œIt would be highly ironic if the first action Congress took after an election largely defined by opposition to data centers would be to make it easier to build them.ā€ - @billmckibben.bsky.social on #BAAJA

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 15, 2026, 11:10 PM

Native American Rights Fund is organizing against #BAAJA: "BAAJA attempts to strip Tribes of the limited opportunities they currently have to engage as sovereign governments in project permitting, even going so far as to stripping cultural protection and Tribal participation in the NHPA."

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 15, 2026, 11:01 PM

ā€œAsking me as a legislator to vote in favor of something based on a non-binding promise made by Donald Trump. I can’t even process that thought. We need to be very careful to not say that we know definitively whether this bill will be good or bad.ā€ @casten.house.gov #BAAJA

@westernlaw.orgOct 15, 2026, 8:51 PM

The group 106 Strong released this video today on how a crucial part of the National Historic Preservation Act works, what it protects, and how #BAAJA, or the new "permitting reform" bill would under mine it, risking our heritage—especially Native Americans'.

It is so well done it gave us chills.

"hello I'm an independent podcaster who disagrees with @rephuffman.bsky.social and the ED of @nrdc.org and @billmckibben.bsky.social about how Congress works, it must be because I'm right and they're liars"

#BAAJA hijinks

Alex Trembath @atrembath • 35m Everyone comes around to theBTI thought eventually.
David Roberts @volts.wtf • ld ... permitting reform advocates have largely won the argument about the need (because they're correct, IMO!), so "just block it" isn't going to fly on its own. Thus many of those same people & groups have added: "If we hold out, we can get a better deal later."
This is pretty clearly false.
David Roberts @volts.wtf • 'Id And, I would say, it's false in a way that's fairly obvious to anyone who knows how Congress works, so it's hard for me not to view it, at least coming from veteran NGO leaders, as *deliberately* misleading, in a way I find somewhat infuriating.
Let's walk through the logic.
David Roberts @volts.wtf Permitting reform is inherently a regulatory affair, which means it can't pass through the reconciliation process, which means it needs 60 votes in the Senate. That is, honestly, almost all you need to know. Everything else follows.
@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 15, 2026, 6:33 PM

that seems to be the coalition behind #BAAJA

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 15, 2026, 6:12 PM

A bill named "Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act" backed by the US Chamber and American Petroleum Institute and the Corporate Energy Buyers Association that Congress is trying to pass in the lame duck couldn't be an example of that corruption, could it? #baaja

@climatebrad.hillheat.comOct 15, 2026, 5:04 PM

The Chamber and the American Petroleum Institute are loving having lefty industrial-policy wonks do their dirty work to justify a mega dirty-energy-AI-corporate-industrial-monopoly power grab before data-center skeptics are sworn in next year.

#BAAJA

Todd Tucker, the industrial policy and trade director at the Roosevelt Institute, said he anticipates that green groups taking a middle road on the bill will ultimately help the permitting reform deal move forward.
ā€œI think there’s a big difference here between opposing and staying neutral,ā€ he said. ā€œI think most of the larger groups are going to stay neutral or somewhat positive. And I think that is likely to give this bill the support that it needs,ā€ he said.
