She could not identify the concubi, but one thing was certain: none of them was Nitara.

“Doesn’t seem to be any survivors,” Sareena declared.

“But there may be clues in the ship.” Ashrah only needed to kill those demons before they destroyed what remained of the vessel. “Can you create a distraction?”

“The way to Nekros is through there!” The Nether-Touched pointed to a narrow pass formed by two cliffs, in the opposite direction to where Quan Chi’s forces conducted their search. “Fighting them will only draw unwanted attention.”

“Nitara will not escape retribution.”

“Is she more important than escaping Arak’shiir?” Sareena shout-whispered. “More important than your freedom?”

Ashrah gripped Nitara’s shoulders and turned her around. Her hands slid down the captain’s chest, smoothing the creases of her shirt, and slipped under her waistband.

Nitara arched an eyebrow. “What are you doing, oruloele?”

“If you insist on remaining in your cabin, then I know a way to make you forget about your problems for a while.”

“I don’t think we—”

A finger at her lips silenced her. “Hush, now, my heart. From your mouth, allow only pleasure to find a voice.”

Now she opened her eyes and squinted at the demon, who was sitting on a block of iron and staring down at her, trying to gauge whether Ashrah was making fun of her. No, the captain decided. She doesn’t have the capacity for humour. “How old are you again?”

“Sixty-one thousand, two hundred and forty-seven Pulses. Why do you ask?”

Nitara choked on a gasp. She remembered then how time passed faster in the Netherrealm, which created the vast difference between its Pulses and the years in other realms. After a quick calculation, she estimated Ashrah would be around twelve thousand and four hundred years in the Vaeternian calendar. Still a tremendous amount, but relatively easier to wrap her head around than sixty-one thousand. “Honestly? Because I must be losing my mind.”

Ashrah nodded, solemn. “That is indeed a consequence of exposure to the Abyss. I propose a pact: I shall allow you to drink my alarun and regenerate your strength, and in exchange, you shall agree to fight me until one of us can no longer stand.”

Listen... Ashrah is a demon warrior fighting for her freedom. There's no perfume, no painted nails, no white-clean clothes, and there's rarely a chance for bathing, either, since many sources of water in Arak'shiir are cursed or have nasty🧵

Ashrah and Nitara like to eat fresh fruits. Sometimes, Ashrah will also bake a cake, flatbread, or something like that, but yes, their breakfast is on the lighter side. Depending on the day, whether is colder or not, they'll drink tea or a juice.

Ashrah and Nitara didn't get their honeymoon phase. Their relationship started amidst an inter-realm demon war, and... well, what followed wasn't exactly peace 🙃

They do get their peace eventually, but by then, their relationship is well established already (and sex isn't a major 🧵

Ashrah obeyed, but like a vulture with a piece of carrion, she didn’t drop the subject. “Though you acted like a coward when you punched me and continue to do so now, I recognise your prowess in battle. Ours was a profound combat; one which I have many times relived in my mind, training, if you will, for our next encounter, and every time your abilities aroused more of my curiosity and my eagerness to challenge you once again.”

“That silver tongue can’t deceive me, deserter.” Nitara cringed. She must’ve been even more exhausted than she believed if she were spilling references about one of her favourite books. One in which a rebel, tasked with infiltrating the enemy’s castle, targeted a knight with flattery and small gifts, charming the hardened nensii word by word, intending to kill her afterwards… only for the two to fall in love. A silly story, really.

“Perhaps one could consider me a deserter for having escaped Ulorzz, but my tongue is not silver.” To prove her point, Ashrah stuck her tongue out.
