A figure is missing from this painting. Michelangelo's The Entombment has carried a human-shaped gap for five hundred years.

Why he left it unfilled, by the record alone: one contract, and the signature of the man who guaranteed it.

Why does this pharmacy jar have a waist? Made in Naples around 1480, its narrow middle made it easier to grip.

No grid, no primary colors - just Mondrian before Mondrian became Mondrian. By the Sea sits half-lit, ochre bleeding through a violet-grey cloud over quiet tidal flats. Honestly, I trust this uncertainty more than the squares that came later. #art #Mondrian #Seascape #ArtHistory #meisterdrucke

A landscape painting by Piet Mondrian titled 'By the Sea', oil on cardboard. A large, billowing violet-grey cloud dominates the upper half of the composition, its rounded, sculptural form catching light against a glowing ochre-yellow sky streaked with warm gold and mauve tones. Smaller grey-blue clouds drift at the edges of the frame. Below, the horizon line divides sky from a calm, flat sea rendered in muted blue-grey. In the foreground, wet sand and shallow tidal pools reflect the sky's colors — patches o

Bruegel painted this in 1565, when harvest shaped the calendar—and survival. These workers are not heroes or nobles, but people caught between exhaustion and plenty. What story do you think their silence tells?

Kunisada was very popular for his images that combined Kabuki theater roles with traditional Japanese folklore (he produced 20,000+ images over his long career). In his lifetime, he was more revered than Hokusai and Hiroshige. “The Ghost of Kasane” depicts the actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV in the role of Kasane. Kasane was a tragic, orphaned woman whose husband, Yagoro, married her for her inheritance. When he grew tired of her, he murdered her by the Kinugawa River. She returned as a vengeful ghost to haunt, and eventually destroy, Yagoro. Yagoro remarried multiple times but all of his subsequent wives were killed by the ghost of Kasane. In Kunisada’s print, Kasane’s spirit is descending from above; she tugs at her hair and is surrounded by “hitodama”, the spirit fire that announces the presence of the dead. Performing as a female ghost was a highly specialized talent that was prized by the Kabuki audience. These roles – as all roles in Kabuki – were played by male actors after 1629, when women were barred from performing on the Kabuki stage.

Arnold Böcklin was born Oct 16, 1827 - 199 years ago today. Villa on the Seashore: a woman in white against crumbling brick, dark rigid cypresses, waves breaking white on rock behind her bowed head. Held at Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. #art #Bocklin #Symbolism #ArtHistory #meisterdrucke

Fine art reproduction of 'Villa on the Seashore' by Arnold Böcklin, a 19th-century painting on canvas. A woman in a white dress and dark cloak stands leaning against a ruined brick wall on a rocky coastline, her head bowed and face partly hidden by her hand, in an attitude of mourning or contemplation. Behind her rise the weathered stone remains of an old structure, patched with red brick and moss. Beyond the ruin, a pale villa with an arcaded loggia of stone columns is visible among dense foliage, flanked
