#ThrowbackThursday to the spring of 2023 and a group of our stellar volunteers! You can see them here opening one of our ancient Egyptian cases, so that we can put back an artefact that was used by a researcher.

From medieval pottery identification to dating clay pipes, we have months of artefact analysis to look forward to.

For now, enjoy this sneak peak of some of the finds. Can you guess the dates for the items shown?

In 1596, if you wanted to show off immense wealth, status, and intellect, you commissioned an Astronomical Compendium

Inside its engraved panels sit four separate sundials, a quadrant, latitude tables, and even a miniature astrolabe.

🔎How was long-distance communication safeguarded in antiquity?

The #Assyrians enclosed a clay dried tablet in a sealed outer layer that guaranteed the integrity of communication across trade routes. Unauthorised access would destroy the unique seal impressions.
