Originally opened as Mogen David Jewish Temple in 1933, the community quickly outgrew it & by 1957 it was sold off to become an African-American Christian Church. Now restored. 📸:me 10/2024. #ArtDeco #WestAdams #LosAngeles #California #GramercyPlace

Stark shadows and geometric dread define this 1930s Art Deco dystopia frame. Notice the glowing highlights on the bias-cut gown and the authentic lifted blacks of the Eastman stock.

Goodness gracious, I want to write a story based on this image.

By C. Coles Phillips, 1912. #art #artdeco

A painting/illustration by C. Coles Phillips from 1912, often called "Wedded." A white man and a white woman stand on opposite sides of a ladder, stylistically framed by a white circle in the background. The woman was seemingly about to hang a picture (one dangles from one of her hands, while the other casually holds a small hammer), but the man has seemingly interrupted or stopped her in her task—he stands slightly above her, leaning his arms on the top of the ladder and looking down at her, while she has one of her feet raised, as if she was in mid-climb. There's a palpable but ambiguous tension between them—are they about to kiss, or is she just fucking DONE with him, or is it something else entirely? (While not one of the artist's true "fadeaway" pictures, the blue of the woman's dress and blue of the man's suit still match the blue background.)

The accepted title ("Wedded") comes from the picture the woman is holding—in it, a man romantically embraces a woman from behind (they're maybe dressed in Elizabethan attire?—old-fashioned vibes, at least). While it's very difficult to see in this particular resolution, the picture is captioned "Wedded" at the bottom.

The metropolis of Erebus (formerly known as New York City) cannot be seen from the outside. Or from the inside, for that matter. The colossal aether-trapping machines make sure of that.

Lucian, their latest mechanic, is determined to destroy them.
