Thought for a second I might have found Phyllosymbia growing on this willow twig but on further investigation is seems to be a small cushion of moss covered in globs of Nostoc. Phyllosymbia is worth a google, BTW!

A gelatinous, spiky mass on a thin willow twig. What could it be?

under the microscope it looks like chains of Nostoc.

a blade of moss poiking through the gelatinous matrix. Also a few algae and fungal hyphae in the mix.
