Here's an actual camera photo I took of a labyrinth orbweaver, genus Metepeira, at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum west of Tucson, on October 4. These spiders pair a tangled web, and conical retreat, with the "standard" circular one. #Arachtober #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders #arachnids

Small spider, facing head down, with silken retreat or egg sac behind it, with silken strands radiating from it. Spider is mottled brown and gray, with a white double cross or "cardiac" mark on the abdomen. Background is blurred vegetation and building wall.

For the ides of #arachtober a Napoleon spider (Synema globosum) from Siena, IT, 5/2023.

#bugsky

Spider with bulbous body, front pairs of legs black and open wide, back pairs of legs white with dark bands. Body is red with a black shape that looks a bit lie a Napoleon-style hat, a thin neck and a torso with wide epaulettes.

Spider too small to see, hiding in a crack with her cast-off legs. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2026/10/thir... #VancouverIsland #Spiders #Arachnids #Invertebrates #Arachtober #NaturePhotography

Photo taken by mistake. A crack in the paint, with an invisible spider (to the naked eye). In the centre, a dark spider; just a blob with legs. The legs are pale greyish brown, with black knees. And hairy. She has just molted; on the right are her empty legs. And a little grey "football"; I have no idea what that is. Background; greyish white, gloss paint.

#Arachtober 15: missed yesterday because I was out protesting bike lanes getting removed (https://nevillepark.ca/2026/10/15/protesting-the-bloor-bike-lane-removal-day-2/).

An orbweaver, light brown and black-brown with spiky, banded legs and a white dotted cross marking on the dorsal side of its abdomen, hangs upside down in the relative shelter of a juniper-type bush.A side view of the spider. Note the tiger-like stripes on its sides and the small curved protrusion on the underside of its abdomen—the "scape", a part of mature female genitalia. I'm sure other species have scapes too but the appearance can be used to ID A. diadematus.

Here is a Grey Cross #Spider (Larinioides sclopetarius) for #arachtober

Fun fact: while females of this species are always independent, the males often have what is called a #kleptoparasitic relationship and will live in the web of a female, stealing her prey

A Zebra Jumping #spider (Salticus scenicus) on a fence post in the garden. She was very active, but also fairly tolerant of a human waving a camera and diffuser in her face. #arachtober #wildlifefrommywindow #invertebrates #arachnids

A very small spider viewed from head on, and slightly off their right hand side. It's on rough sawn wood of a fence post which is a light brown. The depth of focus is very shallow, and so the foreground and back ground are quite blurred. But the face of the spider, with it's large black two main eyes, and the small eyes adjacent to them, is in focus. It has quite large, shiny black jaws. But it's legs, body and head are covered in short hairs, mainly white, but also some black, particularly on top of it's head, and the occaisional light brown ones. It gives it an attractive appearance as if it's been painted with thin strokes of water colour paint.

Good morning, Gray! Thanks for the great shot - #arachtober indeed! Great that you got to take a photo walk, and found things in good order. Surprised that you were finding litter… 😰

Hello to cousin Zack!

Hope y’all are having a great time. Thanks for saying hello! xx

@grays.artOct 15, 2026, 1:15 PM

Morning, Susan ☕️

Sharing a cup at Howard Dooley cafe today, my cousin Zack says hello. 👋

Still @ the dock, keeping busy.

Took a photo walk day before yesterday, Virginia’s ecosystem seems healthy, despite litter. 😅

Found this girlfriend near midnight last night, field wolf spider.

#arachtober

Macro of a large Carolina wolf spider (Hogna carolinensis) resting on a rough aggregate concrete surface, photographed on October 13, 2026, at Zimmerman’s. From a top-down perspective, the spider displays a robust, mottled grey-and-brown carapace adorned with distinct dark brown radiating bands and stripes. Her large, dark compound eyes are centered forward on her head, directly above prominent, bright peach-orange chelicerae mouthparts. Her thick, hairy legs extend outward, showing light banding and casting crisp shadows against the textured, pebble-filled ground beneath her. Her rounded abdomen features a softer, greyish-brown pattern that tapers to the rear.

The Grass Spider (Agelenopsis genus) is abundant here, its signatures webs easily located in grasses and underbrush. Apparently the many species are so similar that it requires very close examination of body parts to distinguish them. Grass Spiders are common throughout the US.

I spotted this little Bowl and Doily Spider in her web yesterday, in an oak sapling in our backyard. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. #Arachtober #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders #arachnids

For #arachtober 14th, I give you an orchard #orbweaver, Leucauge venusta; I know it is L. venusta because they are the only Leucauge sp. in my area.

Work in progress.
Been drawing Jumping Spiders last few days and I now have enough to make bookmarks!
Salticids are my favourite spiders, they were the 'gateway' species that helped me overcome childhood 'fear' of spiders.

Bottom (left to right): Salticus cingulatus and Euophrys frontalis. An A4 sheet of white paper in portrait format, divided by black horizontal lines into five equal rectangles to make a set of bookmarks. Each rectangle has black and white pen and ink drawings of the five different Jumping Spiders. Each spider is labelled with its scientific name below the image. The first two bookmarks have the same arrangement of spiders but the other three are all slightly different either in the order of the species or in their orientation.
