June 7, 19833: The trail gradually descended along the ridge into the green valley where Damascus lay nestled among the mountains.

May 29, 1983: I began hiking exactly at 11:00 beneath a heavy overcast, but no rain. My first three miles were the climb up Big Bald.

July 3, 1983: My final twelve miles today were in Shenandoah. The trail inside the park was well-graded and almost completely cleared of overgrowth. I hiked through dignified old forests of stately trees.
This section of the AT in Massachusetts has limited mountain views. This was the most expansive of the trip. Fortunately, there were many bogs and lakes that offer a different perspective on seasonal colors. #backpacking #hiking #fallcolors #autumn #leafpeeping #massachusetts #appalachiantrail
Thank you, @atmuseum.bsky.social!!
I always enjoy visiting your #AppalachianTrail #Museum!
Thank you #AppalachianTrail #Museum leadership for having the museum open special today for attendees of the ALDHA.org Gathering 2026. 🏕️
I am a member of the Appalachian Trail Museum.
I highly recommend going to this museum to learn the history of the Appalachian Trail!!

June 12, 1983: Before 6:30, as the first faint blue twilight tinged the blackness, I was on my way. The woods were at their prettiest in those fleeting moments before sunrise; I promised myself that I would try to get early starts more often.

What a gift to be able to hike in Massachusetts at the night of leaf peeping season! #hiking #backpacking #seniorhikers #sectionhiking #autumn #leafpeeping #appalachiantrail

May 10, 1983: We had already covered almost ten miles when we stopped for lunch in a clearing at Beech Gap, three miles past the summit. The next portion of the hike was every bit as scenic as the morning’s had been.

July 10, 1983: The trail left the road, went into the woods, and entered West Virginia. The last few miles of the Appalachian Trail in Virginia drifted back and forth across its state line with West Virginia.

June 2, 1983: Beyond Carvers Gap, the trees rapidly began to thin out along the ridge crest. Near the top of Round Bald stood a small cluster of red pines.
Next in the Vermont Appalachian Trail section hike series dropped today! Enjoy the lively view.

May 17, 1983: I finally made my way back to the shelter — no rides, so it was another 3-mile walk in Fontana. You would not think this would bother me, with all the walking I am already doing on this trip,

August 8, 1983: The first climb was a bear, even compared to the rest of the trail in this park. By the time I reached the ridge crest I was exhausted, and I had only come little more than a mile.

July 4, 1983: The first half-mile from the hut this morning climbed along the crest of the ridge forming the western rim of the ravine. This led to an interesting summit called Blackrock.

June 1, 1983: Monday night on the bank of the Nolichucky River had been a time of gentle breezes and soft starlight, but clouds had begun rolling in yesterday morning. By the time I reached the shelter last night they were looking ominous.
