Contrary to popular belief from outsiders, the zizzun language contained a colorful selection of curses. Three buzzes of the wings and a puff of alarm pheromone, for example, was a very sharply worded oath to the First Queen. Honeysuckle did six buzzes, three puffs, and the tail shake that implied something improper about which way Jo had hatched out of her brood cell as she lined herself up with the first bottle, pulled back the strap of her slingshot, and released.“She,” Miri hissed. “She’s sitting right here. And she can clearly hear you.” Was it clear? Jo couldn’t tell. The bee was just sitting there, eyes as blank as ever. Only thing different was the air reeked more of bananas, and the bee’s antennae were a little more drooped. “Then why she ain’t talkin’?” Jo asked. The bee squeaked. It lifted its face, revealing a tiny mouth under the point. The mouth yawned open into a round hole, and mandibles unfolded from within. Inside, Jo saw smooth, ivory plates where teeth should’ve been, and just behind them, a thin, nearly translucent pink tongue with a feathered tip. The bee lowered its face again but kept its mandibles out and parted, and that tongue flicked at her, fanning into four points, each delicately feathered. Then, the bee sucked that tongue and mandibles back in. “Hard,” the bee said. “Learning. Know words. Shape takes time.” It tapped the side of its head. “Hear you. Un-der-stand you.”

The closest I'd ever come to a zombie before this book was my first car, a 1981 Honda whose broken wiper looked, and I quote my younger self, like "a zombie arm with a compound fracture." A joke I made decades ago whose bill is just now coming due.

District 83 passed like a blur beneath them, and the transport had its own cloaking technology. Something that far eclipsed anything Infinity’s time could possibly imagine. “Hmm. That would depend on how you like to measure your time,” it said, and drummed its fingers on the armrest. The interior was significantly more lavish than any transport Eight had created— a comfort rivaling that of the Edisons’ and their lofty expectations. “As you visited me across the years— I have visited the other one. I spoke to your lover, in your chronological frame, fourteen days ago. But the Infinity that spoke to it is two years younger than myself. I am speaking to you exclusively to keep things simple. And in about sixteen days in your world, I will return here to bitch at the other one about its nonsensical approach to creating fuel cells. As you can see, I have structured my time very well.”
